BMW S1000RR Blows Everyone Away in First Literbike Shootout!
03/22/10 7:21 AM

Picked up a copy of British "Bike" magazine over the weekend. I believe it is the first full 2010 literbike shootout to hit the news stands here and the new S1000RR blew the competition away in just about every category as predicted. Horsepower was no contest with the S1000RR spinning the dyno to 190.6 rear wheel HP with the 2010 ZX-10R a very distant second at 171.6. That's a 19 HP difference in case your suffering from a math defficiency, you won't be able to make that up with just a pipe and PCIII! Overall spread between the Beemer and the lowest HP bike, the R1, was 28 HP, that is mind blowing! The ABS braking, traction control and the handling were also in a class of their own according to the testers. They concluded the new BMW is at least one full generation ahead of the Japanese competition. Don't hate the messenger here folks just reporting what I read.

Performance Bike magazine also tested the new Beemer heads up against a 2010 R1 with British Superbike ace twisting the throttles. No comparison, he said, the new BMW is the closest thing ever to a World Superbike capable motorcycle right off the showroom floor.

It will be interesting to see how the BMW fares in shootouts this side of the Atlantic but I think they're going to win everything in sight. The Japanese have a LOT of work to do to catch up. I don't see it happening before at least 2012 with the world economic situation the way it is and R&D budgets tight.

Yep got the same mag I hate to be the one to say I told ya so...but I told ya so. That bike is better then the others in terms of total performance and thats what matters in that class of bikes. Hey for you drag racing guys if you see one of these staged next to you with a strap and a set of Ebay extentions just red light his ass to save face

With the difference in cost between this and all other liter bikes, perhaps with the exception of Ducati, they sure as hell BETTER be offering above-average performance and features...

Actually not that great a difference if you get the base model S100RR without quickshifter, ABS and all the rest. Some of the fast guys are reporting they actually like the bike better with the TC turned off or placed in "slick" mode where the TC is least intrusive.

Here's a new one listed for $13,800, not sure what options are on it. They will come down over the next 12 months I would think as supplies start to increase.

Here's another test on a different dyno, BMW pitted against the 2010 Euro version of the Fireblade. The Beemer has more low end and a lot more top end but the performance differences are not that great, especially zero to 60. The Blade actually was quicker in 60 to 120 rollons.

Realistically Hub, for KHI or anyone else to compete with the new Beemer it's going to take a clean sheet redesign and a major rethink of the entire machine. BMW has created a true racing bike with lights that happens to work fairly well on the street and offers twice the warranty of the Japanese offerings. I mean rear wheel HP on the Euro spec model is within one hp of some of the WSB contenders from last year! Kudos to BMW, it's going to improve the breed by lighting a fire under the tails of the Big Four. They've been resting on their laurels for far too long now with "bold new graphics" being the biggest change.

For some reason, guys, I have a real hard time believing 190 hp at the rear wheel for a liter bike.

Best this particular dyno could manage was 184bhp. One thing I think is important - not all dyno's are created equally and, after having researched a little into the inner workings of dyno's and talking with the service center at my local dealership, some vary a LOT, so, take that number with a grain of salt, I say.

Realistically Kruz, Honda comes out with something, they beat the world. Only thing is, they do it on the track. I just saw one code page and this bike is high tech from the wires in. Stick hers is you leave those off she hates those up her you know twat. Just use the real thing and a set of balls and you can run up front with junk is look at Rossi run a Honda, Yam... It's the rider that wins the race.

Based upon the initial reads, I'm inclined to go with Kruz. This new Beamer reads as a fantastic bike. I may just sell the turbo and roll a Beamer-T.

Light weight and is a S. Calif Chick Magnet.

if winning races really ment anything thing the zx10 would be a slow bad handling bike but we know thats not the case.

the bike is bad ass, but, the current crop of jap liters are MORE than most that throw a leg over can use anyway! unless you are buying it for bragging rights, I see no reason to spend the extra cash on it. Telling me that the base model is close to the cost of the msrp of a jap liter doesn't work either, cause you can pick up a new jap for MUCH less than the msrp!

That's a big +1 wilidx, Kawasaki hasn't won much of anything in years but their production literbikes are always at the front of the pack in performance. I think KHI just hasn't wanted to commit the big bucks necessary to maintain a first rate racing program. I can see them forgoing WSB and MotoGP, too expensive. I would like to see them make an all out assault on AMA racing though as that's cheaper and I prefer to see machines that are obtainable by ordinary humans.

It will be interesting to see how a year from now, when all the smoke has settled, how this new machine pans out. I noticed the RSV4 Aprilia is already beginning to lose some of it's luster. It was absolutely unbeatable in early tests in Europe, then came all the broken rods and lately it seems like it's become an also ran in the liter wars.

I test rode a 1000RR about three weeks ago. Just going on feel, it was hard to tell how much power the BMW really has. Although I guess the dyno speaks for itself. I prefer the size of a ZX-14 and felt like the BMW was too small for my taste. It took off like a rocket though. I was very impressed with the pure acceleration and the power curve seemed to be right on. I am certinaly no racer so I am sure I didn't do it justice but it was impressive for sure. When I was hard on the throttle the front wheel certainly wanted to head skyward.

The zx14 is a great street bike no doubt about that I guess it comes down to what you want out of a bike.If its absolute performance track or straight-line it looks like the BMW has everything else covered. I like what I see the mags doing they are really beating the Jap bikes up now that the BMW is top dog. I hope this is an attempt to get Japan moving on something new after all they need something to write about next year now that the love affair with the CBR1k has ended.

That was a rumour that was going around the internet but turned out not to be true. The S1000RR rods are conventional light weight alloy steel. Aluminum rods are pretty much limited to drag racers where the engine is torn down and the rods replaced every few runs down the dragstrip.

Exactly who buys such a bike unless they live near a track and are willing to spend their $$$,time, and possibly their lives running laps in the death zone potential of such a bike?
Now ya, I get the insecure males desire to strut the fastest bike thing on the street so women will look and men will think they are all of that. Unfortunately the same characters will attempt to unwind this thing on public roadways
and two things will happen. They will never ever be able to ride the bike to its potential, and they will kill or maim themselves or others. Quite frankly its an idiots bike on the street, a very real death threat to insecure reckless idiots or speed freaks.
My brother bought a tri color Duc 1098 and tricked it out to the tune of nearly 30 grand. I have ridden it. It is a basically a race bike with plates. It makes the ZX14 feel like a monstorous wandering marshmellow in the twisties.
It totally emboldens you to go faster and faster.
My brother is selling it. Why ?? He calls it a stupid pointless deadly bike meant to get you tickets and kill you on public roadways. It is only good for strutting if you are into that need, and he aint. No it aint possible to ride a bike like the 1098 in a safe manner ..cuzz it is dead boring (not to mention cramped).
My brother rode my ZX14 a few times and bought one. Why ?? The Zx14 is more than enough of everything and strangley addictive to ride. My brother tells me out of his stable of bikes his 14 gets ridden the most.

That is the highest compliment anyone can give a street bike.

How come I keep claiming the safest bike is the fastest. Because you can ride a bike that will idle all day and one twist says you are safe to stay out of trouble. Like any tool in hand, you can get hurt and those tools are for mankind not...

Now ya, I get the insecure males desire to strut the fastest bike thing on the street so women will look and men will think they are all of that. Unfortunately the same characters will attempt to unwind this thing on public roadways

Some insecure male species thinks his penisize matters if he sat on a fork, backed up on it, pinched his bee sting to swell. OK, so there are sickos out there needing red lipstick is act like a whore? You gonna label everything we do, as if it matters you are flying in the face of mankind who first invented the wheel; to speed his load to harvest, then to market? And from food to feed the need for speed, is USDA fresh for the road, give me that sheet. Two things will happen; One, s/he is going to crash. Two, they will learn from the sport or walk away from it. So much for macho man who walks away, I have to put a label on the sport?

Guys were screaming the species will end with a Z1 on the road and now look; ZX-14 models later is here we go again!

DUC! I like Pee King Duc. Why do you think I insult that phallic symbol label is use that dildo in the video you think you need penis to run fast. You gonna pee kneel lies me, I lasted this long on one fast bike after the next?

Ok, first off, Hub...what? Second, is it just too passé to talk regular-like? Please?

painterdude, your brother, yourself and I think identically on this matter. It's actually uncanny how most of what you've said I've parrot'ed on more than one occasion. On occasion, I ride with a group where a couple of them really get their bikes leaned all the way over. Is it really worth it to risk your life treating your bike like it's on a track all the time? All it takes is a pebble in the wrong location whilst committed to a deep turn to send you flying. And for what?
