Works great in heavy traffic privateer. Their are times when you can tell a driver does not see you and is about to make a stupid move. Make some noise and they will look. Signal light goes off. Try it. The life you save may be your own. Any thing that Helps us be seen is worth a try. These pipes we have make a nice deep tone. They will look. Test it for yourself, works. I always know when a Harley is Shaking my truck door lol. You must agree, you will know he's there ?
First, everything I write is based on 40+ years of riding. You must grant that being alive, and not having injuries from riding after all this time means I'm either the luckiest rider on the East Coast, or have been doing things right.
Ok, so...."make some noise and they will look". Again, CHP and MSF and AMA et.al. have all found in numerous studies that loud pipes don't save lives, nor do they change accident statistics, at all. They also found that loud horns work because cage drivers are conditioned to react to horns and check lest they get t-boned or something. They also found that flashing to steady brake light progressions are best rear-end protection, closely followed by neon orange and yellow upper body clothing and helmets.
If you dress in black or dark clothes, and your average sportbike-oriented helmet, you are invalidating all the things you think will keep you safe, by removing a huge percentage of the factors which prevent motorcycle fatalities. Re-read this....
Most of the time when you blip the throttle and someone looks at you, if you pay attention, you will see they are irritated. It doesn't mean they didn't see you, it means they don't appreciate your loudness. This fact came out in the CHP study, because they interviewed a large number of cage drivers, both those involved in motorcycle fatalities and serious accidents, and those that weren't.
Which is not the same thing as taking steps to be safer.
Squids blip throttles. And most of the time with the air on, and the radio on, I can't hear anything but a pair of open shotgun pipes sitting next to me. But I can see them do it. Blip, Blip, Blip. Whats wrong, won't it idle?
The guy coming up behind you not seeing you will run you down before he hears you. He has to SEE you for it to matter. The guy coming over into your lane has to see you to correct, or hear a horn. Blip your throttle and watch him come on over top of you.
Edit: go ask your local MSF Total Control and/or Experience Rider instructor, s/he will verify all this.
