Well, it may be some of them DO blip because their bikes won't idle. I've seen more than a few die at a light. Mostly Harleys, I hate to say but I'm not stereotyping, just observing historical data.

My favorite these days, is I get to a light on the Dual Highway (aka Drag Strip) and some squid pulls up beside me on a blinged out sportbike with loud pipes. Blip. BRAAAAPPP. He goes. I just nod at him.

Light changes. He zooms off, leaving me behind. I just laugh to myself. There goes a statistic waiting to happen.

Besides, I have the knowledge had I chosen to wind her up to 4k and dropped the hammer while laying forward on the tank I'd have generated smoke and he'd be seeing nothing but tail lights as I shifted into 3rd gear.

I don't care if out of 10,000 times it doesn't work every time! It only has to work once to save my life! I don't run around revving my motor to hear my exhaust. I have SEVERAL times had cagers start to come over on me, then I blip the throttle they take a look and stop coming over. Next time I'll just tell them that the studies say that they didn't hear me and they should have come over anyway! Whatever Mr. Iknowfuckingeverythingfrommyfourtyyearsofexperience!

Consider the Sopwith Camel bi-wing fighter of WWI -

"The Gnome "mono" engines did not have throttles and were at full "throttle" while the ignition was on - they could be "throttled" with a selector switch which cut the ignition to some of the cylinders to reduce power for landing. The Clerget, Le Rhone and BR1 had throttles, although reducing power involved simultaneously adjusting the mixture and was not straightforward, so it became common during landing to "blip" the engine (turn the ignition off and on) using a control column-mounted ignition switch, the blip switch, to reduce power."

Just saying.....

Oh how I miss 'Dogfights' on the TV. Those pilots had some sacks I'm tellin you, and it was all about respect. Funny thing is not many were even into their twenties. I wish I had the opportunity to learn to fly a plane! (possibly more than owning the A-Team van{I know, that's crazy}).

Jeffe lost it:

This is what happens when some are confronted by a logical argument which contests their OPINION. They turn it into a personal attack, thereby invalidating everything they've said previously.

Learn to debate, my friend. Attack facts, with facts, or yield the field. Attacking the person just means you are inadequate to debating the issue.

Calling me names does nothing to prove your point. It reflects poorly on you, though.

Well I think there is a time and a place for everything. Each situation brings up different possible out comes with an infinitely differing path to each end. Some times you'd be amazed at what happens when you think outside the box and try something new.
..couple examples...
#1.
Friend and I go to the bar every weekend when we're younger. My friend is trying to hit on this girl we both seen from across the bar. He does the walk up and say hi scenario. Well she looks bored to me so I walk up behind her and start sniffing her all over like some pooch sayin hi to a bitch in heat. With in seconds she turns around grabs my hand and we're out doin the dirty on the dance floor (ah those were the days). I never did get her name nor her I but it was fun.

#2.
I used to work 3rd shift in a factory and I'd get out at 7 am and hit the gym and come home and collapse on the couch. Like clockwork as soon as I was falling deep asleep some telemarketer would call and wake me up ( I had to have my phone on {on-cal}). I would get pissed and say something rude and hang-up. Now incensed I wouldn't be able to sleep over my fury. Until one day. I decided to have a little fun. The call came so I picked up the phone but I didn't say anything at first. The person would say something like 'sir are you there?', that's when I pulled out the creepiest perv voice I could come up with and responded, ' i like donuts'. 'sir?'. 'i like the ones with holes in them'. 'ah, ok sir i'd like to ask you about'...'i rub them all over my body... and then i like to dance in my tu-tu!'. Click! I laughed my ass off and then had a good sleep. The next couple times they called I did the same thing but they were calling so their friend could hear it. Then the calls stopped for the most part. Problem solved and I had fun!

So even though there is research say this and people who'd rather do that, it depends on the person and the situation , but to say it always has to be one way is always gonna be only half right no matter how many pediatricians agree! Half right is someone else's half wrong.

End of debate.

where's that popcorn, I just worked up a hunger, Romans you got lots o butter right?

Talking or bullshitting about safety ehh ? well studies done by State an Fed here along with the Road safety council & Motor Accident councils dispute that !!! FACT here is Hi-VIS jackets etc & head lights ON !! do fuck all to Avoid a Accident for road safety in OZZ, every bike mag and stat here PROVES THAT !! may it be a "Louder Exhaust or a REALLY LOUD Horn" it does get the attention of Car & Truck drivers! HEADLIGHTS ON ? most accidents don't come from the front ! they come from the Side or Rear ! so you either have a really good LED Tailight to ! I Know in OEM (exhaust)"STEALTH MODE" I could sneak up and Scare the dickens out of them when I woshed past ! LOL but Now since my A/M Exhaust I can't do it now as they Hear me coming, unless my mates are Bullshitting ME ! now the Stealth Mode is GONE !! I Do know That From my Personal experience this is a FACT as I have been their & done that many times LOL

Hey Brenny,

What did you decide?

fwiw, I keep the standard pipes on. I like the quiet. I've removed the flies and am chasing the smoothness and off idle grunt with my PCIII and ignition module. I think changing the pipe would make that harder. I can't use the power I've got so I don't need any more. I like the stealth mode, especially in close traffic as it doesn't distract the cages when we are close to on another (as happens from time to time) so I can just roll the throttle and get away before they realise I am even around.

I would like to shed the weight, but then I have 100Nm with which to carry it around. I'd like to shed the heat, but I would rather the off idle surge and the stealth mode.

I don't mind the looks of the stock pipes but I like the CT duals more and also the yoshi 4-1.

The decision is ultimately a personal one after weighing up the pros and cons. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

So... What did you decide to do?

Hi Bean,

Interesting what you said about hi-vis vests. I decided to try one recently and have been staggered how many heads it turns. I've not read any studies on the topic, just personal experience (sound familiar?) but I'm sold based solely on that experience. Got any references or links to these studies? I'd like to read them.

How u healing?

Recently in Road Rider in last few editions they got right into the topic as it's bin bashed around quit a bit, they cited it's been proven by Government studies, ill look around mate see if I can dig it up and will post it when I re read it!I've also read in either Rapid or Two Wheels the same outcome. I'm still looking russty, just an artical of many similar

Bunch a Munch a Crybabies. Beepeep-Beep! Get out day way! You're making my lens splatter with rain and there is not a cloud in the sky!

I don'think this guy is going to give me any room is did he gas it up when he saw me? GS my cylinder rug right 'down under' his left fender. I saw that plastic bumper go swinging out like a railroad crossing gate. Only 90° in the can opening was that funny and I stayed up.

Tagged a jeep with another year GS with the axle armor in cylinder fashion and I stayed up with that one too. Took out a saddle bag butt not mine.

And then like a sardine, I don't know how you can peel me off that bike when I see this van coming over and sure, I could have lifted, but here I am a touch up in speed wanting away from these idiots; to begin with.

That bike was in 6th gear and all I did was squirt away from the sit chew ate shun. Swallow and burp, I'm done eating. I got nut inn for ya. Head back to camp.

I've got this great reflective coat my employer just bought me, but you will never see me wear it on the bike. People ARE looking at you because you look like a dork plain and simple and as much as you'll say 'yeah, but they're seeing me', that is not the looks I want to get on my bike. Guess I'm guilty of wanting to look cool at the expense of 'safety'. I won't deny it. I got plenty of reflectors on the bike, why do I need to look like a flying saucer from the '80's??

Not to mention the old men wearing these things around here don't take into account that these things wear out quite quickly and that diminishes the reflectiveness. Not to mention they've been wearing them during work all day and there are grease smudges and crap muddying them all up. Just looks dirty and half-assed to me. I wouldn't say I saw them any quicker then a bike with all the markers on it except to say I had to stare for a moment to convince myself that I really did see that dork on a motorcycle. Nerds have a right to ride as well. But if I am gonna worry that much that I gotta sacrifice looking evil like I do then forget it. You just took the fun out of it for me, kinda like wearing a stupid helmet on a bicycle, sorry but I'll take my chances not having everyone laugh at my bad fashion sense. There are some gear manufacturers who are figuring out cool ways of integrating it into a jacket like some of Icons offerings but you still look like a crossing-guard who just stole a motorcycle in my opinion!lol

You may be right edge, I may look like a dork/nerd/whatever in the eyes of other people. I'm not seeking approval of my dress sense , evilness or coolness from anyone. I only want my presence on the road acknowledged and factored into peoples driving decisions. My own experience suggests that hi-vis apparel has that effect.

If that also entertains people then fine, I don't care. The opinions of others on my appearance mean little to me. Of more importance is prolonging my time with my family. If I survive a little longer because I look like a dork then that's more time with my family and that's what matters to me.

On a related topic, I think driver's perception of danger is not about physical threat ("bikes are hard to see because they're small"). People don't see us because we pose no threat to them. Yet drivers will always see a police bike...

Hey Russty, has proven to be an interesting and diverse debate, I never thought when I asked the question that it would stimulate so much passion from the members. But, for now anyway, I think I'll be sticking with my big beautiful chrome OEM cannons and just continue to enjoy riding the best bike I've ever owned.
