Went Down Tonight...ZX-10R Totaled!
05/24/11 8:31 PM

Went down on the ZX-10R about two hours ago was wearing full gear except for blue jeans and it probably saved my butt. Bike appears totaled, everything on left side is destroyed. I was wearing my new Dainese jacket, Sidi Vortex boots, my Taichi GP One gloves and an 11 day old ZOX Spectra R helmet, all destroyed but only damage to my body was my left knee where the blue jeans wore through. Shifter was mangled but I got the bike in gear and rode home at about ten miles an hour. Front end feels bent. I was caught out in the rain and trying to get home fast. I exited the freeway about 70 to 80 mph behind an 18 wheeler. He was slowing fast and I tried to go around him on his right but he turned into my lane. I had no where to go as there was a turn lane directly ahead. I got on the brakes hard and the back end stepped out big time to the left and then to the right and I hit the pavement. I slid into the curb head first but the helmet took the full impact. It worked as designed, no concussion. If I had had my full suit on, I wouldn't have a scratch. If I hadn't been wearing a helmet, I'd be dead. Folks, wear all of your gear all of the time. I'll post pics soon, I emailed Rook pics of my leg, skin rash on my left knee but I walked away. God is good!

Glad you made it alright. Sucks about the bike, but unlike you it can be replaced. Hope it doesn't hurt for too long.

That is a nasty scrape but that is nothing compared to what could have happened. Hope you aren't racked up to bad from twisting or impact. Glad you walked away from that.

After you are sure you are okay, you will only have the bike to consider. I would write it off as a once in a lifetime experience. It happened and you escaped again. We all get comfortable and drop our guard and that is when something will get you. All things considered, you were gotten not too bad.

Sorry about the loss of that beautiful bike.

God is good!

Amen, bro. He's got your back.

Thanks for posting those for me Rook, looks pretty swollen but I'm not in a lot of pain right now....thankfully. Yea, this could have much worse if I hadn't had the gear on. That truck crossed the white line, he had a full lane and took my only escape route. I was going way too fast for conditions though, the asphalt was slick from the rain and all the oil and rubber in the turn lane. I knew I wasn't going to make it, it was either hit the truck or the curb....there was no way out of this one. Don 't even want to look at my bike.

Thanks to all, liability/ comprehensive insurance only on the 10R. Collision on the four sportbikes would have put my premiums through the roof, only my cruiser carries full coverage so I have to eat this one. Doubly tough since I just went through this twice in January with the 14, once when the wind knocked it over in the driveway and second time when the kickstand folded. I had to eat that one as well as two claims in one month for the same bike would have raised eyebrows for sure. 2011 is not turning out to be a good year for me.

Glad your OK, too.

Gotta watch those semis on the exits. I had a Ford Ranger stopped at the end of the ramp waiting for the signal when a semi came up along the left of me and turned right. I never moved but he continued to roll his trailer right over the front left corner of the hood of my truck. Cut into my hood about two feet and smashed down my suspension. Damn asshole was from outa state so for some reason the insurance company told me there was no way to pursue him for damages. I always give semis plenty of space! I saw some pictures of a guy who got run over by a semi at speed. Looked like someone threw their meat out from the butcher all over the road. Oh and here there was a hand and fore arm, over there a helmet with his upper torso laying like it was coming out of the asphalt, and over there a riding boot with a severed foot still in it. And it had just rained so all the meat was clean and pink! Talk about gruesome! Never wanna go out that way if I can help it.

So very glad you walked away from that with just a bruised ego and the slightest of road rash. Any time a bike gets mixed up with a tractor-trailer, things get bad really quickly.

VERY sorry you lost that beautiful ZX10R, too. But rather the bike than you!

Thanks for posting this, Kruz, I know your heart is aching, but maybe it will keep someone else from suffering the same fate.

Everyone else, read the quoted section above, again. There are things you just don't do on dry pavement, much less wet. Learn because you might not be as lucky as Kruz.

I've been down twice on a road bike in my life, both times were just as light rain begin to fall and I was trying to get somewhere fast and both were on asphalt. That stuff is incredibly slick when wet, just like a slip and slide. I told myself I would never repeat that mistake again, the last time I went down I was 19 years old..... stuff happens.

They say bad Luck comes in threes. Your all done for 2011.

Romans, I sure hope you are right about that.

Gonna have to go the garage now and do an assessment of the damage to the bike. The front end felt really "funny" riding it home last night, not quite sure what's damaged up there, could have just been fairing debris jamming things up.

Going to fill in some blanks again. LOL.

MotoGP riders use the back brake. They use it to adjust the weight distribution entering turns. Etc. Sure, they slow to the final marker with the front brake. But the back brake has a use also.

I never use the front brake in a corner in cases where someone in front of me slows enough to affect me. I use the rear brake. It doesn't stand the bike up, or make it drop into the corner, like the front brake does.

My use goes all the way back to the 60s when I first learned. Reinforced by several MSF Experienced Rider courses with full panic stop exercises. The back brake can save your bike, and your life.

Any time you get on the front brake hard, the back is going to lift up. Probably would not have made a great deal of difference if the tire was locked or rolling with the pavement being wet.

Sorry about yer bike...this was a new zx10?The one everyone wants?

Not the 2011 but I would sure take a black 2008 with Akra Evo. Since the bike seems to be the only loss, crashing a new ZX10 would have been twice as bad, financially....and I doubt the traction control would have helped much to avoid the slide.

So, how are you today Kruz? In the classroom? giving a lecture/ shmokin' on a shtogey out at Sh tarbucks?

I agree whole-heartedly, Privy. I put full faith in my rear brake under good conditions. It's the conditions that cause the slippage that I hesitate, for example gravel in a turn ( we tend to have a lot round here), rain / oil, banana peels, ect. But even then you should be able to recover if you're lucky and have good reflexes but not always and sometimes it's not necessary to take the chance. Yet I still catch myself using it at bad times just like anyone else. There's always plenty more to learn, hence why I like this sport. Practice, practice, practice is where the reflex comes in. Mr Miaggi say.

yes but he would have had full coverage most likely. damn that's gotta hurt. Nothin I hate more than goin down, and I've done a fair share in the past. Just a matter of time and nutz.

We have a little less to worry about on the 14. my back brake is good for slowing a little bit but to drop some speed quick it's worth sht.

Major, MAJOR PLUS ONE! wax on wax off. Don't let this one stop you Kruz. We never let negativity stop us from doing what we love. Roll with it and you'll get through just like you always have. Ask for guidance and I am sure you will have The Way revealed to you.
