When to change break in oil
09/25/09 7:47 PM

I did a manufacturer's suggested break in on the 14. I waited to 500 on my 14 before changing oil for the fist time. Saw a lot of shimmering metal filings in the bottom of the drain pan. Second change same thing. 12,000 miles later, good performance, no leaks but it does burn a little oil (or at least it does something with it- I have to add 200ml every thousand miles).

I would like to do a WOT 11,000 rpm ring seating on the busa after a thorough warm up and then change the oil at ~20-30 miles. The people at the dealership are telling me to leave the oil in at least 250 miles because the friction caused by microscopic metal shavings will help my engine ware in. My feeling is there is going to be a hell of a lot more metal floating doing the max rpm ring seal than there would with a gentle break in.

Do you think changing oil too soon or too often when the bike is new is bad for the engine?

i changed mine at the first 100 miles, and i've always done that in the past on the first oil change, just because those things spit a lot of metal the first 10k...but to tell u the truth, u just need to make sure there is enough oil in the thing while its breaking in...the way i see it, i would like the engine to wear in by its own moving parts rubbing together and not having any grits in there shaving down at it also, i see it as closer sealing tolerances...

Thanks RC. I believe this is one of those things that really comes down to what you are most comfortable doing. There does not seem to be any definitive best way. I don't get the impression that there is a solid contingent of owners in any camp saying, "yes, this is the way to do it for best performance." I guess if you believe your engine needs the metal shearings in the oil to break in but you don't want scoring caused by larger particles, you could remove the oil and filter the oil, then pour it back in.

ur absolutely right, thats basically what it comes down to, whatever you feel comfortable with as far as break-in procedures...for the most part, these engines, especially now a days, are almost indestructible, considering normal operation and not really having the thing screaming all the time, lol

Rook I may be dead wrong on this but I do not believe the motorcycle industry, as a whole, uses any special "break in oil" in their new bikes. I bet they use what ever they can get for the best price. If you ran it in like you wrote in the other thread the rings are seated, go ahead and change the oil. Again, in my opinion, I'd still use a regular dino oil this change. And maybe the one after that. Then a synthetic blend, then a full synthetic for the rest of the time I owned it.

Pretty much what I did with my 14, and you've seen my Blackstone Lab report.

Thanks Phil. yes, 3 runs in second gear ~4.4K - 6.6K half throttle/ 3 runs in second gear 4.4K - 8.5K 3/4 throttle/ 3 runs in third gear 3.5K - 11K full throttle. Each run with a full deceleration. I was told I have Suzuki oil in there now.

So, 100% dino oil? Is there a brand made for motorcycles that is 100% conventional. Kawi is a blend and so is Suz. Or should I use car dino oil without the anti-friction additives which some recommend?

I'm showing my age here Rook, Lol. But if you want a "motorcycle specific", 100% dino oil. You can not go wrong with Spectro oils. If you can find it in your area that is.

http://www.spectro-oils.com/products/4stroke/spectro4.asp?products=sport

If your not worried about the "motorcycle specific", go with the dino Rotella. The one in the white jug. With winter coming it might be a little to heavy????? I don't know what the Busa calls for???

I didn't have a problem running the Rotella in my 2 day old, 300 mile first oil change ZX14. Because I got it in the Spring.

There is a Spectro Dealer finder on the site if you click the link. There are 14 dealers within 25 miles of me. Hope some of them have some Spectro in stock. Thanks again, Phil.

I forget you live in a major metro, LOL!!! Even though I bleed green. I wouldn't mind taking a Busa for at least a several days long test ride!!!

Give me a yell if you make it to Milwaukee, you'd be welcome to take it for a good spin.

Got the Spectro conventional oil tonight. $9/quart but a good investment for peace of mind.

They snuck a couple K&N filters in the box instead of OEM. I'll have to bring those back.

I don't think changing the oil too soon will hurt anything, other than your pocket.

For what it is worth, I have never changed a break in oil earlier than the manufacturer's recommended period, which has been about 600 miles in all of the bikes that I have owned (honda, suzuki, kawi AND yamaha.)

In my car's cases (BMW and Mercedes), the first oil change was done at 12k miles.

I trust what the designers of the bike say is safe to do, and 600 miles is what they suggest. I go with that.

Mind you, I change the oil every 3k-3500 miles, which is way sooner than they recommend... but that is just because I feel better about it. So, if you feel better about changing the oil at 100 miles or what not, go right ahead. Again, you won't be hurting anything, other than your own pocket. :))

Think I'm a little late for the party, but this is still a good read:

"Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!” HST

Thanks, Dogo. Quaker State would have been a lot cheaper. Oh well, too late now. Personally, I don't mind spending some extra doe on a new bike, cheap as i am.
