Motor oil in the air box
12/30/12 3:57 PM

Help?
I'm getting enough oil pumped into the air box that if I unplug the catch bottle it will consistently drizzle out.

I have an ongoing thread that includes everything here;

http://tampasportbikes.com/forum/showthread.php?60953-Caps-update-on-the-scooter

opinions?

Hey mang. Looked at your thread... tried to register but evidently I'm not allowed.

Do I have this straight: the 20 minutes your engine was idling there was a plug in the inlet of your coolant pump?
I'm not optimistic. The head is probably warped... might even have piston scuff.

If this proves true I would put it all on the shop. That was a boneheaded move on their part.

Pull crank case vent tube. Sart bike. See if vapor has pressure or a pulse. Blow by = Rings. Easy place to start. Compression test, leak down Next.

Yes the plug was in the water pump during the 15-20 min idle!I talked with him over the phone after he removed the rubber plug from the water pump but before he found the oil in the air box! I was thinking it could be the head gasket but now I think it is something worse like mentioned above!!

Is that the tube that connects to the airbox and goes down to the catcher? If I uncork that (I know it's only supposed to catch moisture) oil will steadily pour out when it idles. And I just got my hands on a compression tester so that is next.

Methinks I would demand a new motor or a rebuild from that lunkhead who ran the bike with a plug in the water pump. I would , however, try to find someone BESIDES him to do the work!

I don't really want a new motor or a rebuild. I want my bike back to the healthy shape it used to be. I have NEVER had a problem with this bike.

Well...in reality...IMO....I'd say..get yer bike....run it...see what it does. There may be nothing wrong with it at all...once everything got sorted out right.Oil in the airbox is not uncommon for these motors.THAT much oil?Not normal...but how about now...what's it doing now?If it's appearing to be ok...ride it...it probably is.Plugged rad hose?Did it overflow any?It should have I would think.Maybe even shut itself off.BEFORE any damage occurred. These motors are pretty darn tough.

"will steadily pour out when it idles"...did you look into the airbox? To see exactly how much moisture was in there.Could be a lot if the rad vapors were entering in there for several minutes. How's it doing now?Still pouring out like before?

It dumped about a half gallon of coolant. And it runs fine now except for it pumping more oil into the airbox.

No, stand on left side of bike look in behind throttle bodies. You will see a 1/2 inch OD S shaped hose. This is where oil vapor is sent up from the crank case into the air box. If you have pressure or a pulse this from this hose you have blow by. The blow by pushes Oil up the tube.

If I uncork that (I know it's only supposed to catch moisture) oil will steadily pour out when it idles

So Sorry. Hope I'm wrong but these bike Can Not be Run with out Anti Freeze.

Well...I HOPE it's something 'simple'...

"Grn, if he does this Rings is just the beginning of what he will need"....I hear ya...I only meant...see what she does.Something as 'easy' as an airlocked pump 'could' correct itself....moving the bike around could get those bubbles moving up.That's all I meant.I'm just a tad 'optimistic' when it comes to some things with this bike.It apparently didn't vapor lock.So that's good. And you've made an excellent suggestion there....and probably exactly what's going on.

I read Caps posts on the other site...that one guy...that talked about overfilling,foaming....sounds plausable...Cap did say it was a tad overfilled.

"The mechanic put an inline stopper in the water pump intake"

That's the dumbest thing I've heard in quite a while and one of the reasons I stopped taking my stuff to shops 40 years ago. Whoever calls themselves a "mechanic" and pulls a numbskull fuckup like putting a stopper in the water pump should be taken out and summarily horseswhipped. Whoever was ignorant enough to do that doesn't have walking-around sense, much less the smarts it takes to repair and maintain machinery. Whatever your problem turns out to be, THAT moron is responsible and should be made to pay.

Congrats so happy to be wrong. But still not solved ?????

Just keep checking the oil and water, those guys should never mix. Between that and the temp gauge, you should get your answer.

2ND, Leak down test ?
