I have a 2006 ZX14r.

I'm looking to move from a country that measures speed in km/h to one using mph(UK). I want to take my 2006 ZX14r with me, but I know that the speedo will need to be converted to mph.

I can easily change the fuel consumption to miles per gallon, but I have no idea of the best way to change the speedo.

I would need to physically change the speedo to read miles/hour. Is a replacement gauge face a viable option?

I could also buy a used MPH Meter Unit, but I don't know whether I would inherit the odometer reading from the used Meter unit, or whether my odometer reading is stored in my ECU. Also, it might convert my 55 000 kilometer odometer reading to 55 000 miles...

I could sell my ZX14 locally and use the cash to buy one in the UK, but the proceeds of the sale are not going to cover the cost of a replacement.

Any suggestions from someone who has any experience of this would be welcome.

Yes you should be able to change the meter unit's kph to mpg just by going into the settings. It's been a while since I looked at that but I'm pretty sure it does either one as well as display text in French or English if you want.

Buy yourself a Healtech SpeedoHealer v4. You can select mph or kph according to which unit of measure your ECU is programmed for. You would then need to adjust the Speedohealer to about -40% to make the speedo needle read a stock mph speedo face accurately.

Yes. There are aftermarket ones. You need to disassemble the meter unit case, pull off the needle and stick the new face over the old. It is a bit tricky to get the needle back on so it is perfectly at 0 but people have done it. I have Illumaglow faces but have yet to install. There are companies that make other faces that work with the stock LEDs, I am sure. I presume you could make your own faces and print them if your handy with some graphics software. The increments just have to be evenly spaced.

Now if you go with a 200 mph face, the speedohealer adjustment will be a little different than if you go with the stock 190 mph. You really could have a speedo that only went to 100 mph if you want. You just would adjust the Speedohealer differently. There are charts with recommendations on the Healtech site and I found them to be very accurate for my purposes. I have a 45t sprocket and 190/60 or 200/55 rear tire. My Speedohealer is dead nuts on. I tested by GPS and that would be your final step in calibrating your kph bike to mph. You can just get a friend to drive next to you to test against his speedo if you want but the GPS will be the most accurate.

Yes, a used meter unit has the mileage from the bike it came off stored within. Also, if your ECU is calibrated to kph, you'd still need to correct that with a Speedohealer. BTW there are other speedo correction modules but the Speedohealer probably has the best reputation for reliability.

If you get an undamaged, well functioning used meter unit, that might be the easiest way to go about getting the proper face on there even if the mileage is off by a few thousand miles. Other than the differences in speedo units of measure, I have no idea if the Euro meter unit is identical to a US meter unit. Could be a (bigger) can of worms.

I am surmising all of this but I would bet it all will check out if you talk to a Healtech rep. Check out their site and give them a call.

Is it legal to import a Euro spec bike to the US? Everyone would buy a Euro S1000rr if that were the case, no? I hear the US s1000rr sucks.

Where a fabric store would have a tube of ink for silkscreen work, or place dots on a shirt/blouse. Look for the one with an applicator tip so it drops out. The drops dry, stay in place, and pop off when you want to remove them. I use it on my speedo face. I bought a green bottle, placed a dot over 30/40/65 speed numbers. Just convert the km to mph and set the dot over it.

You are looking for trouble changing the face and removing and replacing that needle over that tiny pin. Leave the OEM alone. Mod outside the OE... mine is the example and it hasn't cause anal fixation I have to have it and now you're oh so fucked...

I have seen small stickers on eBay with mph speeds that just get stuck over the equivalent km/h on the dial. Looks horrible, but possibly a cheap fix if it is acceptable for the UK MOT. I have a labelmaker and I'm not afraid to use it!

Buy a used multifunction meter on Ebay and try the face swap with that. That's what I might do if the needle installation is that difficult. With a 12 year old bike, I don't mind doing mods that tamper with OEM equipment anymore but I don't want those original pieces to ever be permanently screwed up. I recently was talking with a member who had to take his cluster apart several times to get the needle on 0. I don't know if they ever read right after removing the needle but I haven't heard any complaints about that. Then again, you're already jumping through some hoops to get the kph to mph.

Otherwise, try a used mph meter. Assuming there are no Euro specific components in your Euro meter (like an indicator light for the immobilizer or something like that), a US meter should work just fine with the Euro ECU. The only thing is the speedo will read 100 mph when you are going 62. Throw a Speedohealer on there and you got it fixed.
