Ping Romans 2009 ZX-6R

Hey Romans didn't you say you bought a 2009 ZX-6R? I've got the hots for one and wanted to know your impressions. Not sure how a Supersport will work for me at 6'3" and 220 lbs though.

I'd be very interested in a response to this question as well. Looking for the best 600/750 cc track bike for a tall person. 6'3" 210lbs here. -bg

I've been doing a lot of sitting on bikes and testing, including Yamaha Demo Days at the track, for just such a bike. I'm 6'3" and around 260. So far, the best sub-literbike (as that's what I'm after) I can find that fits me the best (I have long legs) is the GSXR-750. Obviously, your mileage may vary.

Cool! Thanks for that information. That's the one several people have recommended for track use. They say it is not much heaver than the 600, but way more powerful. -bg

Bare with me I will do my best to explain. I don't have the gift of words so I will keep it simple. The 6R, for us 14 owners, contrast between the two is huge. Light light light light. This has been the most flick able bike I have ever been on. The bike takes no effort to ride and makes you look like a much better rider than actually are.

4 example, if you think you are coming into a corner to hot, Your Not, the bike takes it with eze. It's the heavy 14 thinking that you have to get out of your head (still working on it). I sneak out after work to a couple of spots I like and let that sweet sweet sound of 16,500RPM sing, And sing she does, Wow. Almost like a F1 car. The scream keeps you up on the pipe and keeps you from getting out of it when common sense tells you to back off, but, you just don't. Bad I know, but until you try,,,, Wow, Just leaves you wanting more. The 6 has nothing down low so riding slow is relaxing. I never worry about a quick flick of the throttle kicking me off if the grip is relaxed. Where as the 14 with a one handed sneeze in 1st gear could put you on your Ass.

The size issue. There is no doubt that the sixer was made for a 150lb jockey but I do not feel like I'm cramped in any way. All controls are close and bike feels short and easy to operate. Sorta like a toy or your first mini bike lol.

That is until she walks the front wheel going into second with your 240lb fat ass on it, then it's respect time. I can see why this bikes dominates at the track. The corner speed is where she shines.Wow.

The 6R is FUN FUN FUN. Most local tracks offer this bike for their training weapons. Give her a whirl.

I will bet you a beer your lap times drop. It will work 4 sure. It's the bike of choice at most tracks. Try one. Also I forgot to mention the transmission. God himself made that one. Absolutely Flipping Amazing. I want to put a shift star kit in the 14 but I think i will still be disappointed. Nothing will compare to that Trany. SWEET.

I would consider the nearest tracks that the bike will be at- if they are faster, the 600 will feel gutless IMHO
(unless you're the guy crawling in the back of the Intermediate group).

those three bikes that you pictured are 650r's not zx6r's. and your rear tire is squared off pretty bad, and huge chicken strips.

We had a guy from Cornerspeed lead us around VIR with a camera on his tail (a month or so ago) on a green 09 6r- on the higher speed sweepers we were running up his ass and having to let go. He would hug the far inside of the turn and keep a true race line through every apex making it virtually impossible to pass safely on the outside and also top out 6th gear way sooner on the straight. He would have been impossibly fast to keep up with if he had a more powerful bike and pull through 3th and 4th gear as hard as the bigger bikes.

At Loudon NH on the other hand a 600 is all you need as you only use 4th gear once and you actually don't have to feather the throttle on a liter during 2nd gear turns and be constantly just a fraction away from high-siding.

Just my td thoughts and observations here.

My other half has a 2009 ZX-6R monster Energy edition. And what everyone above has said is true, there is a night and day difference between the Zx-14 and the ZX-6R. When jumping off my 14 and onto the 6R, It kinda feels like a MOPED on steroids !
And the Steering stabilizer is there for a reason. The front end on the 6R comes up real quick. And I'm not talking just a few inches.
It does need more R's to make power, but once you break 12,500rpm's she shits and gits.
It took the Ms. a while to get use to it, considering before the 6R, she was driving an 88 750R Ninja. A lot heavier and less power.
She use to lag behind me and my 14, now I'm seeing more of her tailight...
And boy talk about turning heads. Try pulling into a Bike night with MATCHING Monster Ninjas.....

Here's a pass by with her after market exhaust installed

Thanks for the great inputs folks. I went to Kawasaki City Saturday morning and sat a on green '09 ZX-6R, it was love at first sight! No test rides allowed though. I like the ergos, feels like my 10 only a littler tighter, very racy. The handlebars felt a bit narrower than the 10 and turned in slightly to pull your elbows in, overall the bike felt amazingly light betweeen the legs. In the styling department, I really like the way the green one looks, better actually than the 10. The endcan is similar but smaller. This thing won every magazine Supersport Shootout I could find in '09 and most of the bikes haven't changed for '10 so it's all good. The Big Piston Forks get high marks as do the brakes, midrange, topend power and overall handling. The only negative I could find was a comment that the rear shock fades pretty quick on track if you are hammering hard. The dealer has three green '09s left in stock and the discounts are crazy, $7516 drive out, that's tax, title, registration and a full tank of gas....the works. The question I have to ask myself is do I really need this bike? I have two liters and a 14, where will the ZX6R fit in? Would I be making a mistake to drop the coin on one of these?

Romans, you're wife is doing a great job, forget the chicken strips she'll be burying that thing in the corners one of these days. How did the Akra work out for you and the remap/PCIII? Big improvements and if so where? If I get one of these I am seriously condidering leaving it stock. The Akra for my 10 is still in the box as is the Power Commander and TRE. The bike is so quiet and smooth I almost hate to mess with it. I prefer the 10 to the CBR around town, the soft linear low end is actually an advantage in traffic.

I was just out on my buddies wife’s r6 last week and it only confirmed for me why I no longer own a 600 for a street bike they are simply gutless below 8k. If you want to know what the zx6 feels like on the road put your zx10 in 3rd and ride around all day without changing gears at stop lights or while in slow moving traffic. If I had to have a smaller bike for the street it would be a Triumph 675. The Triumph is more than a match for the inline fours in terms of out right speed and has more tq spread across a broader range. The zx6r would be a great track bike but coming off of a zx14 or even liter bike you will be kicking yourself in the ass every time you took it out for a street ride.I would guess your zx14 setup makes more tq before 2500 rpm than the zx6r makes at 12k LOL that don't sound to fun to me on the street

LOL that don't sound to fun to me on the street

But it is.

Maybe because my bike is such a beast that I like switching from one to the other. It is a big big change. Maybe that's why I get such kick out of it. Lots of Fun.

How did the Akra work out for you and the remap/PCIII? Big improvements and if so where?

The pipe was a major change. The power now seems to come on at 6200RPM and stay even all the way to the limiter, before was at 8 thousand was when she woke up. When the bike had no pipe I would not ride it, just seemed boring. It has only been recently that I have been taking it out. Slowly this bike is setting the hook in me. It is a ball Really.

It seems funny to tell ZX-14 riders to go play on a sixer but you should. Big learning curve. These bikes have their place that much is for sure.

Kruz no PC5 or any other of Ivans magic. Not being mean, but she(wife)would not know the dif. My plan is to place a light weight battery and ceramic bearings in the bike and leave it. When she grows into ????? maybe she(I)needs a BMW ?

Wife does not like me riding her bike because I break just about everything I get on and she expects no less when I'm on her baby. So I know my opinions don't count for much, but guys, don't count these sixers out till you give them a real ride and a fair shake. You may find your self with a grin inside the full face. And No I won't tell.

Went to bike night. I checked out every sportbike there and no one was without CSs. The 600s I saw with barely used side rubber was unbelievable. Blame it on Wisconsin weather, I guess.

Kruz, I think you'll zip around traffic and have a blast on freeway exits if you can hit them off peak traffic hours.

I haven't had a problem catching a 600 with the 14 even when at a very disparate speed/rpm disadvantage. Downshift and open 'er up and the 14 will pass a 600 without using much road at all....as long as the road is straight.

Remember that one thread "Spanked by a 600"?

Rook we have the same weather here too, I guess. Do you guys Not have the chicken strips on your street bikes ? If the answer is no, could you explain how or where you are finding a place with enough corners to strip them off completely. I'm sure it can be done, but getting caught here in Toronto is a major concern. Maybe I'm just getting to old for that kind of riding on the street. My center tread has always been the first to go. The nearest track is is better than 2- 1/2 hours from here and I work most weekends, so it's not easy(kids u Know and they hate it).

I hate to admit it but I'm starting to have second thoughts on this one. You guys are making good arguments on both sides and that's OK, I wanted to hear both the pros and cons before I drop a wad of cash on this thing. I just don't know, I was going to run over to the dealer this morning and seal the deal but I think I'm going to wait a few days and let the fog clear. I picked up a speeding ticket on Memorial day and to be honest I'm a bit spooked right about now, tickets will do that to you.

I have a nice set of fast left and right hand sweepers near the house, concrete , not asphalt road surface so the traction is superb and you can really throw the bike in. One or two passes on a new tire, even on the 14 and the chicken strips are history.

^^I'm finding a nice selection of freeway ramps that have some great corners and all one way traffic. I haven't completely lost the CSs but I am coming close on the right. Left, I might never roll over the whole surface in that side. BTW, Rom, weather has been beautiful here over the past couple weeks. Hot pavement makes a big dif to me.

Maybe it's just me Kruz, but I see a 600 as a less crucial "have it now " bike. You might want to pick up a used one that is a couple years old. A used 07 will still be much better at cornering than your big bikes. I wouldn't be in too big of a rush even if the deals are hot on a new 600.
