Tires
03/06/09 7:56 PM

My rear stock tire is getting close to replacement time, it has about 2600 miles on it. So I wanted some opinions from the members as to what they use and or prefer. If I change brands I will replace both tires to have a matched set.

I'm liking Continental Road Attacks, recommended here. Purchased them here and they arrived in less than a week.

Just getting started with them, but so far I'm impressed. My sons each bought a set from the same place. -bg

+1 on the Conti RA's. I'm on my third set and see no reason to try anything else. I get about 6000 miles out of each rear and run them to the edge with no hint of traction loss. Good in cold weather as well as rain.

Running a set of MICHELIN Pilot Power 2CT for over 8200 miles and the rear is ready to retire...
Its replacement a BRIDGESTONE BT-016 is sitting in the garage waiting an appointment to swap out.. I can only hope to get nearly that many on it.

Then again i have nearly 22K miles on an '08 so i ride ALOT, the other (read better) half is like "crap can you buy a tire for less then 2 bills for anything you drive" i only smile and say "you get what you pay for...." The trucks shoes run $250 minimum, and they mostly play in the dirt...

I'm usin Metzeler Z6 on mine. The standard bt014 gave crappy mileage and the grip is mor than sufficent in the Z6's
Scratching the fairings trough the bends are no problem så the tyre is not the part that limit the speed around the bends. I would not recomend a sport tyre for this kind of bike. The exeption would be for track day riding, i might fit a couple of ME Z3 for the day.

I think the longest lasting and most responsive tire is the pirelli corsa 3 by far

Right now I have a set of Pilot Road II, with 4,100 miles on them and it looks like they will make it to about 6K. Still more than double than O.E. BT-14. Like them a lot.

I am currently using the Bridgestone BT016 only 1500mi on so far.
The old site had a link to a speacial buy just at the time I was looking.
I was torn between the BT016 and Dunlop Roadsmart.
So far I really like the BT016 a lot better than the OEM BT014.
I think I still want to try the Roadsmart at some point but will keep my eye out for the pacjkage buys.

I'm also looking for a new set of tyres.

I had Pilot road 2CT's on my FJR, and they were great - however I'm looking for something more sticky.

Has anyone tried Pilot Sport HPX?

zx11, you've already got the better of the two. i've tried both. that of course, depends on how aggressive you ride. if you like taking high speed turns i suggest keeping the bto16's, but if you want more potential tire life go with the roadsmarts. the tread is very deep in the roadsmarts.

gordon, can you give me a tutorial on how to quote a member's post? what about previewing the post before posting too?

Sure. Just highlight the text in the post that you want to quote, copy (Ctrl-C), go down to the "New Post" window, click the "Quotes" icon, and paste (Ctrl-V) the copied test in between the "quote" and "/quote" thingies. Then leave two blank lines under the quote, which will end up being one blank line in your message.

Regarding previewing before posting, that's on our to-do list. It is a bit complicated. Actually, I've found an excellent programmer in India, who did the "Show New Messages" programming. I may be able to use him for this as well. -bg

I am very impressed with the BT016's, and unless something new and better comes out, I will use the 016's on the ZX14 from now on.

And thanks bg for the 411 on quotes...

I've got the Avon Storms. I love 'em, my stock skins I got 5500 and now I'm at 5500 and they are starting to look worn but they still will last a while yet

It seems like everybody likes what they run. maybe a better question is what tire should you not get if you want milage out of the tire?

I'm not trying to hack this thread but since notfirstbutnext said, "I wanted some opinions from the members as to what they use and or prefer." I thought I could ask this:

Has anyone tried the rear tire with the 190 width and aspect ratio of 55 instead of the 50?

Advertisements say it acts like the 180-55 that some will replace the 190-50 for but fits the 6" rim better. Anyone have opinions or experiences with this size?

I replaced the OEM tyres before I rode it with Pirelli Corsa III and a 190/55 rear so I can't compare and comment on the difference. But I do like the handling (so long as the pressure is maintained above 40PSI. I've replaced 190/50 on previous bikes with 180/55 and loved the handling improvement.

I'll try the 180/55 next but that might be a little while away.

I've been a long time Bridgestone fan but have tried Michelin Pilot ROad 2s on the 14 and been VERY impressed. I will usgo for them again. No loss of grip/handling that I notice (fast road use) and great mileage. Try them I'mm sure you won't regret it.

Thanks for the reply russty, I ran the 180-55's on my R1's and FZ1's which I thought they really did improve the way the bikes handled over the 190-50 tires, especially how quickly they laid over on turn-in.

I am hoping the 190-55's will give me the same results as the 180-55's since I have already purchased the exact same tires you have for my ZX-14.

I have very little miles on the OEM tires but I wanted to make sure I had a good tire on the ZX before I do any hard riding.

I've not had any experience with the Bridgestone 014's before now and for break-in I guess they are doing fine. I plan to put the new donuts on before the break-in is over though so I'll be ready for whatever may occur!!
