Is it light gray compared to your skin or light gray compared to the black paint of the gearbox where your shift shaft goes in? If its light grey compared to black paint (actually that would be dark grey in my book), that's about the color of molibdenum paste which is used on your clutch push rod and probably allso on your shift shaft. I think I might haave seen such a dark grey grease around my shift shaft when the bike was new...but that was eight years ago so hard to tell you for sure. ...or if it really is light grey, that sounds like the super sticky whitish lube they put on brand new chains. It's very sticky. I left this on my chain and it flung all over everything a few times and then was gone. Grease from the chain builds up under the sprocket cover. If the the chain was not cleaned and relubed before starting service, I could see it running out near your shift lever. that will happen with any lube if you use it heavily. YES, now I remeber---the chain lube that goops out sort of has an automatic effect of lubing the side stand pivot and the shift shaft. Nice engineering idea, KAWAI!
I would wipe it off and don't give it another thought unless it persists. go another hundred miles if you want and then clean and lube the chain. That should get rid of it if it is new chain anti-rust goop.
