Finding special tools
07/24/09 10:04 PM

I notice the service manual lists special tools that are needed to do the procedures in each chapter. There is a number included with the drawing of the tool on the list and it looks like a part number. Is there some way to order the tool?

I'm looking for the diagnostic tachometer that is supposed to be necessary to sync throttle bodies.

Those are Kawi part#'s your local dealer can order them for you. My bet is they will be pricey though

^^I was thinking they would cost an arm and a leg too - and maybe the #s are just for certified shops to order - but I'll look into it. Thanks Heathun.

Rook, Throughout the years, I did not need special tools from the book. They turn obsolete with the bike. That's how specialized so as not to waste time hanging up the customer with yur hack job of a special tool. But darn if that bike did not come back on me.

So, do you really need special tools? I would say 2 for bike universal for now. More like for the rest of my life, I see two tools you cannot fool mother nature.

1. $7.00 volt meter is about as Fluckit; if you can afford the lounge chair, then Fluke. Har dee har beer crate is freight close enough?; for a digital read volt meter from that place? I'd say, you can cam sensor that motherforkerightit right up the ohms scale wit that sucker.

2. Down, you are on that 4-hose me my manometer is the merc stick is stick it on a wall/waiting. You could [I hack no clue] if this will wrk, but skunk works is set the ohms on 20v; watch the meter spike or a digital number move up or down you need a tach read.

3. Is the Charm = >>>>Improvise!<<<<

Thanks Lytnin. I will check the price online.

Hub, you're reading me pretty good. The manometer looks fine for T-body check but the vacuum gauge I bought for $12 should work as well and it's calibrated. In any case, I imagine a manometer meter is going to oscillate at idle speed like my needle gauge did(see my new post on engine vacuum thread) and make it pretty hard to to read real accurately. Digital is the way to go for accuracy, I think. If it's cheaper than mechanic bills, I'd buy the special tools that I absolutely need to get it done perfectly. If they work and if I will use them at least a few times before the 14 goes bye-bye some day, I'll still be money ahead.

A good throttle body syncing tool at Motion Pro.

I have one that regularly gets used.

HMmmmmmmmmmm. HMmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

I'm not so sure. $100 and not exactly shining reviews. Extrapilot, have you had any trouble with yours sucking up the fluid or getting bubbles trapped in the tube?

Also, is it calibrated so you can actually accurately read how many mm Hg the throttle bodies are sucking?

I have the older version of this unit that has graduation marking along the sides of the tubes. Also, mine was filled with mercury. If you don't blip the throttle hard, I found no problems sucking the fluid out of the tubes. Calibrations should not be such a issue because the fluid is drawn from a common bowl/reservoir, so between cylinders this should have equal draw.
I have used it allot and is very sensitive to adjustments made to carbs and throttle bodies.
I’m not sure what the graduation denomination are, I would have to pull it out and look at it myself, since I’m at work.

JC Whitney had this units awhile ago selling for like $60 at the time, but can't find the exact unit. I can tell you they are yellow in color.

Thanks extrapilot. $60 starts to sound reasonable to me. I'll check JC Whitney.
