Looking to wrap my ZX-14 but have some questions
06/16/23 6:14 AM

Hello everyone,

I'm considering giving my ZX-14 a makeover by applying a sleek matte black color using the wrapping method. However, I'm starting to have doubts about the process. I've been using Viking's magnetic tank bag for a while now, and the magnets haven't caused any issues. I'm a bit concerned about how the wrap might affect the grip of the tank bag on the tank. Moreover, I'm worried about the possibility of damaging the original paint if I choose to remove the wrap later.

I would greatly appreciate hearing your opinions on this issue.

Didn't see this one. I'm a stickler about modifying the OEM. I bought a used tank to modify the paint. Just bought the cheapest and could live with the dents. I traced a spider to the side of the tank with nail polish. For sure this will damage the tank if I were to remove it.

You can buy stronger magnets to move past the layer, but I over engineer so it sticks. Mods have to be looked at as, 'all in, no looking back' is my motto. You wanted it, you deal with it later and lose value down the road. That's why I mod around the OEM.

That's why I build or modify meguyveer type hardware, not the mod to the OEM being, a drill or grind is the going back to stock ,and the OEM no longer can mount, or fits as well as the OEM did.

Say the layer comes off with a hair drier. You still have the variable to lift the clear coat and/or bubble the paint getting it off.

Vinyl won't damage the paint and if the bag sticks by magnets, the vinyl isn't going to stop it. The problem will be applying the vinyl. If you have never done it, it's not easy to stretch around the tight radiuses on motorcycle bodywork, especially the point of the nose. I put 4" stripes on mine and the nose was a challenge, you're considering wrapping the whole surface. A hot sunny day will help. Expect to put in practice and have failures before you get the technique down.

Rook your stripes were wrap. How long did those last? Years? I've heard car wraps can last several months then start to degrade. I suppose that's heavily dependent on things like exposure to weather. I don't know how often your bike was outside, like work days or something, what's your impression of expected lifespan?

So, I followed my gut and went ahead with wrapping my bike to give it a fresh look. But you know what? The worry I had in the back of my mind actually came true. My Viking's Magnetics tank bag that sticks with magnets isn't holding onto the tank as securely as it used to. It's not staying in place like before, which is a real concern, especially at high speeds. That's definitely not what I wanted when I made the changes to my bike.

Naturally, I'm now on the search for a new tank bag, one that doesn't depend on magnets to stay put. Since my old bag was from Viking Bags, I thought I'd see what they have this time. And guess what? I found this Viking Bonafide tank bag that doesn't use magnets. And the best part is, it's really affordable.

I'm really curious to know what you all think. Has anyone given this specific bag a try? If you have any insights or opinions, I'd love to hear them. Thanks a bunch in advance!
