What is "machine oil?"
05/11/15 9:02 AM

Yeee-ha, got me a new vise (and a new vice)! The manual recommends using a high quality machine oil to periodically lubricate the moving parts. I would think regular motor oil would be fine. 3 in 1 oil comes up a lot when I Google machine oil. Is that going to be a whole lot better than motor oil?

That vice has a jaw wide enough to pop the tires off the bead. Brace the table end with all that 'work weight' about to happen between those jaws. The internal gear screw should have anti-seize. Oil is oil. One is thinner than the other. Plastic gloves and wipe the shaft down; open the jaws and oil what was laying inside the vice.

The oil is going to evap so this is routine maintenance come winter with another wipe down. Or, take a propane torch to the shaft and warm it up, not make it cherry up; more like seasoning the pan with oil. So when the shaft is hot, soak a rag in oil, coat the hot shaft with the oil and that kind of bakes the oil as a layer; keeps the rust off it... old header pipe racing trick you make a pipe; not chrome it; but start the bike; let the pipes warm up; shut it down and oil the pipes with the smoke coming off the pipe; this says hot enough; short of lighting the oil on fire.

I knew you'd be here first, Hub. Thanks. Yeah, that kitchen table has a steel post and legs and a heavy formica top but I planned to prop a 2x4 under the edge or buttress to the post when I do some heavy duty vising.

take a propane torch to the shaft and warm it up, not make it cherry up; more like seasoning the pan with oil.

That's Rooks kitchen table/shop bench for ya. Unbolt the vise, throw down the cutting board and chop some chicken!

BTW, I'm doing some heated aluminum bending. That's what the vise is for. The x won't give me back my old vise so I had to buy a new one. $70 @ HF.

Oil is oil. One is thinner than the other.

Hub, I paid $3 for a bottle of 3 in One oil and if you ask me to "name that smell," I'd say, automatic transmission fluid. I might as well have got out my bottle of Marvel Mystery oil.

Sewing machine oil would work well. I'm almost sure that the last time I looked for machine oil, that's what they gave me.

Yeah. saw that online but try to find it in a hardware store. I know it would smell better, that's for sure.

I found it at a haberdashery/material shop. It doesn't seem to collect gunk as quick as 3in1 oil. It's also good for hair clippers, kitchen appliances. It's also called mineral oil and is supposed to be non toxic if used in appliances with food preparation. Haven't tasted it lol but it doesn't smell like other oils.

Machine oil used to all be made from whale oil, thus the funky smell. With all the restrictions on whaling, I'm sure there are a few alternatives. MMO will work as well. Many shops use it in their air tools.

Thanks, untamed. Mineral oil is also baby oil if I recall....and that smells like a baby without the poop! If the lable says 100% mineral oil, should be good. I happen to have a tiny bottle of oil for my clippers. It doesn't specify what type of oil it is but it says, "do not swallow." Perhaps it's nontoxic but not really something that is meant to be eaten.

MMO will work as well. Many shops use it in their air tools.

It's been a while since I shopped the supermarket for baby supplies. Have to check for some mineral oil. A lot of baby products are great for wrenching. Those resealable baby food jars are nice and nothing sops up a spill better than a fresh diaper.

Got some, Eray. Smelly stuf for about 24 hours. I suspect it is ATF. I have smell de-javus.

I will use it for a vise but I wouldn't risk trying it in my ATransmission.
