Hay Willid,
That's the test they give you in California to get a motorcycle lisence. You're allowed one fall but have to finish in 60 seconds.

On my '08 I wouldn't think about removing flies. Until my skill as a rider is such that I'm driving to my limits of the stock setup....what's the point. It's like golfers with a 15 handicap who buy a big expensive driver which will get them 20 more yards off the tee. It's not holed till you chip it up and putt it down.
Fun is where you find it and I find it when I'm on my bike!

Ride like the wind,
Sharkey

willid - I have done a little test riding cornering at ~4-5K rpm, flies out in 1st and second gears. It is a little scarey. The throttle is kind of jumpy. I wish I could have run this same test with my bike flies in but I wouldn't have dared to try it when I first got on the 14.

I suspect there would be no throttle dif above 3K with flies in or out. I have always heard the flies are open at 3.2K rpm 1st gear, even lower rpm in 2nd, then even lower yet in third. I believe if anyone is doing some throttle adjustment on a corner above 4-5K rpm, they had really better know what they are doing. There's just too much torque there and you have it all on the G2s, flies in or out, when above 3K.

I've had them removed from my 08. I had a couple of experiences mid corner at low rpm (about 3k) when I wanted some more acceleration, so I turn the throttle, not much happens so I turn some more, hit the rpm when the flies open and 'whoosh', it stretches my arms with the transformation. I love the power it has when the flies open but I hate that transformation. to quick, and not enough grunt before that point. If this transformation happens while I take a corner in the wet then I'm buggered! it'll spin up and throw the back around me to the front!

Since the removal, and dyno tune, and ignition advance, the bike now has more on tap and a linear delivery. Couple that with some clutch control and I think the bike is actually easier to ride at low speed as it is more predictable.

I agree, those folks having trouble with flies out on their '08s...it's all in the mapping...you gotta find a good one, accept no substitutes.

^^There is still a bit of a power surge a little over 3K in first gear just like there is with flies in. I'm hoping a flies out map will smooth that out for me and give me full power on take off from an idle.

Ask Ricky Gadson? Come on, those guys dump the clutch at 7000 rpm. They know NOTHING about flies. We are talking about riding on the STREET.

No. I've re-mapped with flies out, custom mapped a few times, and the surge is not a function of the maps, unless I want to 'dummy down' - move away from better TTD's by mod'ing the maps I've had, to soften it up. To me it seems that defeats the purpose of a custom map, which is to have the best TTD.

The thing I don't like about my 'flies out in my 06 is the gas mileage went to crap, about 20 MPG now. Also, when in the lower mid range, about 5K RPM it snaps alot with no buffer feeling, just instant throttle, it's like an on-off switch.

I do close my throttle all the way when slowing for a corner, especially when jamming down thru the gears, (why do you keep your throttle open while downshifting?), but once i start to open the throttle, i continue all the way out of the corner under acceleration, after the weight is transferring to the rear, I would never chop the throttle after opening it.

I meant to say that I always have at least a little throttle going while cornering. I rev and down shift closed throttle before entering the corner but I'm back on it throughout the corner. The pitching forward of the suspension would be one scary result of cutting throttle abruptly in a corner but the jumpyness of getting back on it is worse, IMO. But as Hub said, some like that ragged edge. I need to know it won't kill me before I start to love it.
