I have never removed the top triple tree but I have removed forks.
The handlebars clipons are very easy to remove just by taking out the two allen head screws for each handlebar clipon. Then the clipon will turn loose on the fork top. You can pull it right up off of the fork top. Have something to tie it in place because you will have your fluid reservoirs you probably should keep upright and keep air from rising into the master cylinders or fluid leaks running down the bike.
After that, according to the service manual for the Gen1, remove the steering head nut and washer.
Then loosen the fork clam bolts on the top triple tree. It should come off but now you will have some ignition wiring to deal with and that, I have no clue about. Follow it and look for a connector....otherwise (and I suggest you be absolutely certain if you do it) you'll have to snip the wires and solder them back. I did that on my horn only to find the wires actually have spade connectors.
The fork clamp on the top triple tree is not the primary clamp. The main clamps are down below and they will hold the forks in place even if the top clamp is loosened. If you have Ohlins forks, those bottom clamp screws are only supposed to be torqued to ~7.5 ft lbs or something like that but there are 4 of them. They should hold the front up safely but maybe not if you put a lot of pressure on the front. If you have stock forks, you should be ok. Might want to try the torque on that bottom clamp first to be sure. If you really want to be totally safe, use a steering stem lift and rear stand.
