Friggin Insurance!
01/06/15 7:34 PM

I know I am beating a dead horse here but the price of insurance on these bikes down right sucks. My policy with Geico expires soon(they wanted $987 to renew) so I was shopping around. I carry fairly high limits. The best price I got was Progressive at $763 paid in full. The highest estimate I got was $3900. Im over 40 with no tickets. My buddy pays $450 a year for two bikes! As soon as they enter the VIN# the alarms must go off...Now a few companies also ask if you have a turbo or NOS as well....Either way I think its pretty outrageous!

Here's how I feel about this whole deal. It is risky by nature. The risk of wrecking the bike is small compared to your body. I go with liability only for this reason. If I crash, no more bike and that's all there is to it. I'll be a lot more concerned about my body.

The kind of crash that is very likely is a driveway tipover. Carry comprehensive for a small extra fee and it's covered. I would have broke even if I carried comprehensive because I've had 3 tipovers in 7 years. One was so minor there was no need to replace a thing. The other cost me a thousand bucks out of my pocket. I am just glad #3 happened before I replaced anything from #2 or else not carrying comprehensive would have put me way behind in $$.

..of course, anyone who has really crashed and needed to total a bike will sing a totally different song. To me, crashing is just not an option. If I can make it another few years, the $$ I have saved will be able to pay for a new bike anyway (not that I actually have that $$ in my bank account LOL--already spent it on modding the bikes I have!).

Curious how you got that low of a quote from Progressive. I had Progressive for many years and we were on their best rates but when I got a quote for a 2012 14r it was $1600, 50 years old, married, no tickets or accidents. Geico was only $450. Guess Geico figured out the "R" actually stood for something cause it's $600 now. I heard State Farm is very reasonable but they are so much more for my car and truck it isn't worth switching.

I just reiterate that it almost always PAYS to shop around. Especially if you also have car insurance, home or rental insurance, etc. A bundle gives you more leverage than just a motorcycle policy and having more stuff to protect also flags you are a more responsible person - mostly...

I have my ZX-14 insured with liability and comprehensive for $175/year. But the last time I checked around the rates varied by almost 10:1! That's a HUGE spread and it shows how insurance rates are about as arbitrary as airline fares.

Toledo that funnys that you say that about Progressive because when I sold my 2007 and was at the dealer buying my 2012 I called Progressive from the dealer to get the insurance changed over to the 2012 I was buying. Well the progressive rep quotes me $1450 for the 2012 up from $607 for my 2007. All the coverages stayed the same. Rep couldn't give me a reason for the huge increase. I rode the bike home the following day and got on the phone getting insurance quotes. That was when I switched to Geico who quoted me around $940. I just went with Geico for the last three seasons until I got the notice of increase this year. Thats when I did a online quote with Progressive and they came back with $855. If you pay upfront for the whole policy you save a few more $$ down to 763. Considering my buddy has a FZ1 and New Super Tenere and pays about $450 a year for both bikes I still think its to much.

State Farm with bundling is 690/yr for full coverage with highest limits. Once I add my rental home we'll be even lower.

I'm down to $690 from $900 with Rider Insurance... full coverage.

They only serve the New England states. Don't know how Pa got in there but they're the best i can manage. My credit score is 765.

As of Oct. 2014 they DO NOT cover track days. New exclusion.

970 on 14 r all coverages. 1230 on zx 12 r all coverages. My friends say that is cheap. Sure don't feel cheap at 333 per month over 7 months.

When I got my 14 my insurance that had been $500+ for my ZZR1200 (full coverage)jumped to $800+ still at full coverage and bumping my deduct to $1k rather than the $100 it had been. Being 59 at time of coverage and with a 1yr old "slightly higher than norm" speeding receipt, i probably done ok with my progressive group! Maybe by the time I reach retirement my options may get better. Glad I had the full coverage on my 1200 though as all the xtras and the bike payoff helped FORCE my hand to buy a 2010 ZX14 .... :)

A very good rate. The 12r is more $£ than the 14r because in Ontario the number of incidents (accidents and claims) far out reach the number of claims on the 14 or 14r.

Still that number seems huge! But unfortunately I will pay it.

Ps to remove all peril and ride comprehensive I save 180 per bike. Bringing 2300 down to 1920. Big whop.

Coming in at 1670.00 for my 14r and 1300.00 for my Z1000. It is what it is unfortunately....

Yeah, displacement isn't everything. Good old claims statistics and demographics, specifically of the experienced greybeard variety must be helping hold the rates down, as far as I can see.

Keep making good choices, fellow old-farts.

I'm with Hagrid on Rider insurance. I have 5 bikes, the ZX14, Duc 748, and Interceptor are all full coverage, the two suzuki's are liablity only. My insurance covers all 5 bikes, with me, my wife, and 19 year old daughter as covered riders. Total ~ $1,200/yr. Not bad with a 19 y/o on there...
They only cover riders living in the northeast USA states, but you can ride anywhere.

I am just outside the GTA, paying $800 on an 08.
Clean record, and I'm not in my 20s...or 30s,
closer to 50. I am happy with paying that for
a 14.
