Back in the Saddle After Rod Bearing Failure
02/04/24 11:38 AM

Last week the #3 rod bearing went on my 2012 ZX14R w/36K miles. Decided to go with the 14R again and scored a 2023 ZX14R w/200 miles on the speedo. Happy to be back in the saddle again after 7 excruciating days of not being able to ride. I would've loved to get my hands on the 2024 model, but my dealer couldn't source one. They did have a ZX10R 2024 40th anniversary edition on hand and oh my gosh that thing looked awesome in person.

'Year killing me Larry!' siro, be honest. Did you beat the '012 or book it upon break in? Kind of sounds nice if the dealer ordered his allotment of 14's and none to be had near by.

I need a ZX1550 SC... no I don't. Oh yes you do! Mother T? Warp speed say ye?

Congrats on the new ride Sir. Great paint IMO. Not quite 40th Anniversary but I could live with it. I'd put your paint ahead of mine which is the 13' black "se".

I'm with Hub as far as any suspicions of 36k failure? I think most would consider that early death, although I'm sure many motorcycles never make that far because of other...unfortunate reasons.

Any thoughts on why not fixing or replacing the blown engine?

The red wheels on your '12 might look rather keen on your '23? Any other parts that you could or would've liked to transfer? (not sure if you traded/sold the '12)

The beauty of the 14's production run are a lot of interchangeable parts of this bike's family. Swap the fairings to wheels. Engine families; as long as they are from the 1352 and 1441cc's.

Yesterday I happened to check the 3 mileage intervals. Speedo showed 21,400mi on my '017 SE. A trip had 200 plus and about due for it's 300mi chain lube. B trip showed 1,000 plus miles on the last 3000mi oil change.

Broke that bike in so anal like, never saw close to 4000 rpm first 600mi limit then first oil change. From then on, oil always starts with decades old 50w racing and mix the rest with what's around. Engine does not burn a drop. Remains at the level when 3k comes around.

Tore open the last oil filter to look for the 36k fuse to start lighting off. Found this to be one of the cleanest filter pleats among the 4 14's I've owned so far.

So with 200mi on the bike, siro, I'd be tearing into that oil filter now. Shoot the debris between the pleats. I've seen plenty of pleats to see who is who if that helps.

Beautiful new 4R! I was under the impression that rod bearing failure happened before 10,000 miles but I guess not always. Have fun with your new baby.
