Tell me the Secret to the Steering Stem Nut
07/15/09 6:47 PM

I hear the steering stem nut holds some sort of mystical secret when it comes to torqueing. I don't know - I just dialed my torque wrench up to 58'lbs and put the socket on the nut and turned. It went 'click-clunk' and the job seems done. Am I missing something here?

Is it best to break a nut free before checking torque or can you just put the wrench on and check it?

^^all I know is that I loosened the nut less than 1/8 of a turn to feel if the nut was tight or if it was just stuck. It was tight. When I turned it back To about the same position, it seemed to be at about 90'lbs which is much tighter than spec. <<I'm leaving it alone since that's the way it came to me from Kawi and it seems to turn smooth and have 0 play.

Thanks Hub. Looks like that steering stem isn't something you want to mess with if you don't need to.
