Synthetic Oil
04/06/09 8:51 PM

When is it ok to switch to synthetic oil? One dealer told me 2000-2500 miles another said 1000 big gap there.

Opinions will wary here quite a bit. I did 2 oil changes with dino, 1-st at 200, second at 500. Then sync. at 1000, 3000, 6000 and will maintain 3K intervals form here. The bike runs great.

The clutch slips a lot or just under extreme conditions?

I think my expensive Repsol Moto Racing oil isn't too much better than dino oil after running a couple hundred miles. It was slicker than a greased weasle when new. No creeping or clutch slipping, just smooth sart ups and quiet shifting. I guess real racers have all the oil they want and they change after every race. I believe synthetic degrades slower, but for the street, I'm not sure it pays to go real expensive.

Sounds like it would be better to just stick with good dino oil.

^^ I've only tried Repsol. Mobil 1 4T Racing oil is my next try. If you can find one that costs less, it's better than dino/synthetic blends from the stealer.

If your clutch slips from synthetic, will that stop once you go back to conventional oil? Will ther have been any damage caused from synthetic oil clutch slippage?

Hub,

I have approx 1700 miles on my 14 and I want to go to the best possible motor oil out there. In your opinion, should I switch to Mobil 1 4t or go with a 50/50 blend. I definitely dont want my clutch to slip so what should I do?

ssalib, your clutch will "not" slip with straight Mobil 1 4t

As long as you use a motorcycle specific synthetic, you should get no slippage. It's the modifiers and additives that are in auto synthetics that will make a wet clutch slip. Amsoil for the last 15 years, and never a slip.

I put Shell Rotella T 15w-40 in mine this last oil change, and I do not like it at all.
I am having very rough gear changes, and a nasty clunk (slippage?) in first gear when I let the clutch out slowly.

I'll be switching it out this weekend if I get a chance.

Hey, has anyone had clutches slipping from amsoil 10w 40w (motorcycle specific synthetic)? I hear this is a good oil to run.

Hey minter I just switched to that last night, 2,500 miles, cost a arm and leg at stealership, rode hard last night, no slip yet.

I would like to change mine to synthetic. I only have 450 miles on it, I have heard that you need at least 1500 before switching. Any comments

That's what I always hear, too. 1,500 miles. I guess full synthetic is too slippery to ware parts in. I would wait until next Spring if you will be storing for winter. Store with something cheap and replace it with full sythetic before starting the ngine in Spring.
