zx14 good deal?
01/11/11 10:04 PM

So I stumbled across a 2007 zx14 with aprox 2-3k miles. All stock and pretty much a new bike. Back tire needs replacing and registration needs to be taking care of. There are couple minor scratches from kid knocking the bike over on its side. It is an all black in color. The guy wants 6k for the bike and I am pretty tempted to buy. What are yalls thoughts on the price? Decent enough? I have been kicking around thoughts of buying a used busa or the zx14 but there is something about not going with what everyone else has that I really like about the zx14. Anyways your thoughts.

Oh and hello by the way.

1st of all

I don't what size you are but taller guys tend to like the 14 better with that being said. Stop following what everybody has and let them follow you down the road.

All kidding aside you can't go wrong with either bike. I had both bikes and stayed with the ZX14 because of size and power I just like the power and the style of the ZX14. As for the price sounds fair to me if the scratches minor enough for you to get over.

Good luck

Do some searching around the site. Lotsa good info if you're considering a zx14.

IMO, if you are a cash buyer, $6000 is too much for the bike you described. Sounds like a $5000 bike to me, and that is dependant upon what you mean by "registration needs to be taking care of". Expired tabs? That's not a big deal. But if you mean there's an issue with getting it registered, that's a deal breaker.

Other issues I have with the bike as you describe it:

aprox 2-3k miles

Well which is it?

Back tire needs replacing

At 2-3k miles? Someone did a couple burnouts on a tight engine.

There are couple minor scratches from kid knocking the bike over on its side.

Shit happens, but if you're anything like most zx14 owners, those scratches are gonna bug you. Replacing plastics and/or painting costs $$$.

It is an all black in color.

Dems da slowest. ... actually the '07 is a metallic black. If it isn't metallic, it isn't factory.

In the end, however, if you like the bike... it's a good deal.

GL with your search.

Go with which ever one looks best to you. The 14 and the gen 2 busa (08 and up) are both equal in speed.

14 is a bit more comfy and has excellent braking and easier to do routine maintenance.

Gen 2 busa has more stock racing features(steering damper, slipper clutch), has a wider aftermarket and many of the small parts seem of better quality.

I still can't pick. To me the 14 is a better looking bike and that's why I got it first.

My stock tire (and the tire I replaced it with) lasted all of 2500 miles before it was toast. No burnouts, hell, didn't even get over 6k rpm.

LOL I just don't know how you guys do that to your tires! I have never gotten under 6000 miles on any of my tires. In spite of being accused of walking my bike down the road, I insist that I do ride hard WOT 1.2.3 gears, a wheelie now and then. I still think it may be an up North , cold road/tire thing. I'm new to sportbikes but it's been 3 years of progressively harder riding. Still usually had ~8,0000 miles/tires....unless I picked up a nail which happened twice.

Don't wanna turn Eddie's thread into a tire thread, but I got about twice that out of the the stock bt014 doing an easy break in. But that tire was TOAST. I just assumed the guys changing out the stockers at 3k miles or less were riding 'em hard out the gate and/or replacing them as soon as they hit the wear bars. I get about 3k miles outta bt016's, but I ride them way harder than I did the bt014's and don't wait until they look like slicks.

Now now, dems swear words lol

Thanks to all for the replies.

I am not a big guy. Im 5'7, 180lbs. I would prob end up lowering the bike since I just like low bikes. I might sound like a prude or something but I am not a racer kind of guy on the streets and since our track here in Oahu was closed in in 2006 I dont have to worry about that too much. I am a relax and cruise type of guy but I am played out on cruisers. Ive sat on a few 600's, 636, and a older 750 but they jsut feel so darn little compared to the cruise bikes I have riden in the past I cant get over it lol. The liter bikes seem like a good fit but to be honest they are too darn peppy for me. I like the sitting position of the zx14 and since I will be riding to work allot I dont want to be hunched over all the time lol.

I am going to have to check out the bike and all but the guy seems dead set on 6k and since we have a very limited market here in hawaii I dont think i would get much better. Shoot they have a guy trying to sell an 06 for 8 grand here. the 600s go for 5grand+ and liter bikes normally run 7-10grand. I did check KBB on the bike and its showing 6750 so I guessing not too bad.

He did have the radiator replaced from the bike being knocked over so he claims.

How many 14's they have there? Can't be too many?Busa's?I wonder IF it might be worth getting one here, then shipping it over there.Maybe not too bad?IDK........I can't see HOW a radiator would be damaged by "falling over" on the side.Musta been a helluva drop!Somethin about that just doesn't sound right.I've dropped mine on her side...I hate to say it,but twice(plus she was in a terrible crash in 07...smacked BOTH sides hard in that)NO RADIATOR DAMAGE whatsoever.Nothing even remotely close to smacking the radiator.Somethin's(no offense) fishy there .Any type of external side damage anywhere...along the cases or the bar levers...the tips? How bout the pegs?Any scraping that wouldn't be consistent with a forward moving bike?Pipes underneath?Scrapes?Gouges?Paint on the panels all match?Same finish and all?Better look close before ya lay out the cash.Under the oil pan...any gouges like it ran over something? And your lower shock mount....scraped?If you can get in there and grab the header pipes...maybe see if they're loose?IDK...the radiator thing doesn't fit.Something else is goin on methinks.IF he DID nail somethin headon with the front wheel...you could have some non-visible fork damage...could turn out REALLY bad.He didn't smack the front wheel into the radiator did he?Hittin a curb or somethin worse?I don't mean...bent forks here...a total fork replacement's what may have happened?Any "new" looking welds up along the steering stem area on the frame?Like maybe they got repainted there?I'm probably fishin here, but you never really know.

Otherwise...if she sounds good running...no leaks...and the trans shifts okay....could very well be a nice bike afterall(after checking the HANDLING on some straights and curves)You should be able to roll easily into a curve with no strange force going on,OR having a problem taking your hands off the bars on a straight(or curve) and having the bike continue to track straight(or stay on it's line) and smoothly..I'm just a tad skeptical when it comes to "strange" sounding stories(like radiator damage from a fallover). And that registration...what "kind" of issue with it.Vin's match okay? You could go online and run the vin and see what comes up.Maybe you SHOULD just for the heck of it.No need to tell him yer doin it.

If she's an 07...the black will be metallic as Dogo said, and brilliantly shiny as well. Not satin black like the lowers on the 06 model.I'd guess IF it's not like that,it's been wrecked OR stolen...2,3K miles....that's nothin....why would a guy want to get rid of a beautiful bike like that with so little riding time on her?Sorry, don't mean to .There's plenty out there that ARE unquestionable. It wouldn't be farfetched for the guy to have a wreck...even a minor one(a lowside),and decide"nope....just a bit too much for me"...and sell. That does happen.

Just how DOES a "kid" knock a 560 lb bike over anyway?

She might seem to work perfect at say,60 mph.But what about 100?You don't want any weird surprises hittin ya unexpectedly.

Ok the guy didnt know the exact mileage because he has been deploying off and on since 2007 when he purchased the bike. This was his first bike. I think he got nervous a little bit on the bike and basically parked it. On a military post you have to go through MSF course and have your license and not just a permit in order to drive on post. Well he never bothered to go past his learners so it has sat majority of its life. The radiator was replaced due to it leaking from a pin hole leak from the bike being knocked over. The kid was not supervised and was crawlin on top of the bike. 9 year old. The curb caught the bottom corner of the radiator. Paint is all correct like yall mentioned. He had the local here do a complete inspection when it happened (as i will have it checked also). The registration is lapsed 3 years since his deployments and not having a license.

I want to say thanks again to all of you and for the concerns and heads up. Good looking out btw. As far as ther being many zx14's here, you are correct there are not. Very few around the island really. But there are plenty of busa's running around. The dealerships here hardly ever get any 14's in so they are not in very big demand here.

RE: zx14 good deal?

Well I went and took a look at the bike and checked out what you mentioned Blue (thanks again btw). I got clarification of what he was saying etc... The milage was wrong (wasent too pleased about that) however it is still low as compared to others on the island @ 6200 miles. His buddy who was housing the bike for him since he was gone back and forth put the bike outside in the freakin rain, etc.. So the paint is kind of cloudy (needs a good cleaning and freshing up). The damage to the bike was more than what he said (he said he didnt think it was that bad). He thought that side fairing was two seperate pieces and only the bottom needed to be repair/replaced however it is one piece as I explained and showed him. So where the bike landed on the curb was cracked and therefore needs to be replaced. I told him that in the current condition @ 6g was not going to happen (even though it is already priced below KBB & NADA). He said 5500 is the lowest and once I have the dealership do a complete run through on the bike and all mechanics, seals, etc are good then I will consider the 5500. I would end up just replacing all the fairings to be honest since the complete kits online are only 900ish (not ebay ones). With registration being redone will run about 300, tire= 300 guessing, tune up= not really sure, and eventually will replace all the fairings. I will be sitting right near 7 grand after it is said and done. This ofcourse is cheaper than what a paint job in hawaii would be so I may still end up doing it.

What ya think now?

Your are prob right about it. It is freakin frustrating is all when all you got is Overpriced bike around you. If I do ship from the mainland it will cost me an additional 900 on top of the price. People here are just nuts the way they thinking. Found an 06 for 8 grand and a 06 busa for 7500 with a 300mm tire kit on it but it seems to have 'issues' with it as well. Ive looked for a long time here and for price range I can pretty much get an 01 r1 or GSXr1000 for 5-6grand with 10k miles and they have all been laid down lol. Just cant wrap my head around this place even afteer 7 years.
