zzr12 to14
07/29/11 10:58 AM

Hi all, new to the forum. Ridden all my life (soon to be 58), had some cool hotrod bikes over the years, starting with an H-1 with an H1-R motor/whale-bellies from Dallas Kaw's laydown framed dragbike back in the 70's, through 1st gen Suzuki GS 750 and 1000 w/cams and big bore kits, to a ZX11 bought new in '91, then replaced with the ZZR.

Not long after buying the ZZR, had a bout w/cancer, so it sat for several years. Revived it last year and added D&D's and had it jetted, and now....it's not enough! (The thing looks like it just came out of the crate, less than 2,000 mi on the clock. I have a couple other bikes too.)

So, I'm shopping ZX-14's. A rural dealer 65 miles from Dallas has several new, from 2008 and up. Has a red 2010 I've got my eye on. $9,999 sound like a good price?

Been reading up here; I'll need a couple mods right off the bat, mostly comfort related for my 6'2", 245 lb frame., IE: stacked Heli/Genmars, lowered pegs, prolly a Connie seat, cut down in the rear to retain the cowl. (I'm not a knee-dragger)

But wondering, how much RWHP is a good pipe and a tune worth? The secondary 'flies are not a concern on the 2010 as they were with earlier models, correct?

Nice to meet everyone; looking forward to the arm-socket ripping power of one of these monsters! John

G'day progrocker +1 on the ZX14

But wondering, how much RWHP is a good pipe and a tune worth?
Depends on Slipons or Full system ? with Pc3/Pcv from 10 to 25 RWHP, mine just got Twin Slips with Pcv & had 164rwhp Dynoed, I gutted the Cat & got a great map from Jeffo, not sure what she has now but its "Heaps" more Responsive!
2010 as they were with earlier models, correct?
Yes from 08 on.

And a good full exhaust and power commander will kick her up to 170-189hp depending on map from what I have seen.

Hey guys, thanks for the welcome! Making a bike "my own" has always been half the fun; can't ever leave well enough alone. 14's are beasts bone stock, and it doesn't sound like it takes much to really wake 'em up. Getting close to 190 hp from a pipe and tune..wow.

I was have been looking at a zzr1200 for a while myself. Missed out on a local deal for one with 12K miles for $3,500 . Now I am looking at zx14's. Can't find another deal like I did on the zzr, but I will continue to look.

bigwillie, we're neighbors; I'm in NRH. Miserable riding temps these days, eh? Supposed to see 107 next week. Ugh.

Blacklightening, that was a heck of a deal, and since I can't justify giving my ZZR away like that (I put 2 grand in it last year, inc. $500 for D&D's), I'll probably go sport-touring with it and add some Givi bags, etc. I've seen guys on the ZZR forum selling theirs for $3900-4500, and mine has less than 2,000 miles on it. I know it's old -tech, but when new, I paid what I'll be paying for a new 14. (The downside of buying Japanese bikes, unfortunately.) I don't mind the idea of some variety.. and they do go like stink; I've stayed right beside a stock older 'Busa, and the ZZR is far more comfortable.

Hi,
I would highly recommend the bars that are in my signature,LSL handlebar. OMG! They are so much better the clip ons. Trust me. Every zx rider that sees them is really impressed. Yes, it is a little expensive, i personally would not have bought them, but oh man! I LOVE THE HANDLEBARS!!! SO comfortable. The bar is exactly where it should be.

Oh, also a note. Mine is painted black, but it is funny, you can see gold shining through. The keys wear the paint down. I just find it funny on such an expensive simple metal product, that they don't use better paint.

viper,

Appreciate the heads up! I'm up for a more relaxed riding position, for sure. Where I live in DFW, TX, I'm on the bike a good hour before I can get to the countryside to let 'er rip, so I need to be comfortable.

Going to work the deal tomorrow. A new red 2010, fresh from the warehouse. It'll be a 77 mile ride to the rural dealer, but worth the effort. I've got too many bikes, never ride the '04 Nomad, so they're willing to give me in the ballpark of what I need out of it in trade, based on $9999 sale price of the 14.

I'm excited!
