Maybe if you have a speeding problem somebody can put a throttle limiter on for ya!?I cruise at 80+ all day.And if there's a nice long stretch of road with no one on it I'll twist it open!!!!

Let's not kid ourselves here, I haven't met anyone that bought one of these bikes that didn't blow the national speed limit all to hell. And I'm not going to lie to you and tell you I don't speed on my 14. One reason why I don't like to ride with other 14's anymore is the rides always seem to end up with a 150-160+ mph sprint somewhere along the way. If I ride by myself I can at least limit my speed to maybe 120 which is arguably a little safer.

Just this morning I came back from a supply run I could carry on bike. Me looking at the clock being 11am, I am out the door maybe 12 minutes later. I come back, it's 11:45. She goes to me, "Didn't you leave yet?" OH, you have no idea when I say, "The faster you are off the streets, the longer you live" is my own motto I live bye.
D'uh 14 is slow plush, you keep it in 6th just to keep it more sane on the way there and back. Imagine if I kept it in 4th or 5th... >>>

Oooohhh, we had a good time with this one on the old forum. There was a guy who was always careful to never break any speed limit by more than 10 mph. He got all defensive because a few other members (including X-14, my friend from IL, where the heck did you go?) jumped all over his sh!t asking why the heck he would ever get a 14 if he never intended to go over 75 mph anywhere. He had a lot of reasons to do the speed limit. "I am a dentist (my personal fav), I got a good deal on the bike, I don't want to risk my insurance, I don't want to deprive my family of my income...." You know, I had to side with the dentist. It really is just fine to do the speed limit on a 14. It performs extremely well within the speed limit. It's enough excitement for some people to do some 1/2 throttle accelerations to the posted speed limit on a super hot looking bike. I think riding a sportbike is always part fantasy. Most of us find very few opportunities to really put the bike to the test on the road, we don't have the skills and lets face it, most of us would be pretty slow on a track or drag strip compared to the few people out there who really possess the skills to squeaze every drop out of a sportbike. So I say, live your fantasy how ever you like and it will become reality if you have the sense to carefully take it in small steps. I voted "yes" because I think anyone who loves this bike for any reason will have a lot of adventure on it doing what ever speed they like.

Interesting topic to say the least.
For years and years, I rode on older bikes. An old 79' CB750K, a 250 Yamaha Enduro, a 83' CB1100F, then I got modern. I bought a 01' CBR1100XX. What a change for me. My abilities were no where near what the bike could do but I loved the learning curve. I bought the XX when I was still living on Long Island, NY. Up there where I was, there weren't too many really open roads such as there are down here in S.Florida. When I moved down here, and learned where the Sunday morning squidlyness (sp?) took place and the fact that there seemed to be like 80% less police down here when you ride out on farm/ranch counry I went a little nuts for about 6 months.
Then something happened. I discovered the drag strip all over again. I had never raced bikes previously, only cars. So I took my agressions out on the track insted of the street. I suddenly found myself way way back at the end of most group rides on Sunday mornings. I wasn't unhappy about that either. I was riding my own ride period. Now with the 14, it's even more so. Yes, I do ride above the speed limit at times but not all that much over and this is when conditions permit and I know the road. There are times that on the interstate I'll crusie at 85-90 indicated in a 65-70 zone, but I'm going with traffic most times.
Now this last Sunday, I went out on a 150+ mile morning ride. There was a stretch of road about 2.5 miles long with nothing. Just farmland. Flat, straight, with no driveways or intersections. I wound it up to about 170 for an instant. Then back down to 70 for sane riding. That was enough and I was thrilled.

I just can't see it, if I was looking to be like the rest of the sheep I would have bought a smaller bike that was easier to throw around in the corners or a bike like the Concours 14 with the hard bags already installed to take long cushy posted speed limit trips on. But I did not. I love the feeling of hitting 100 plus while the on ramp disappears underneath, or watching the Harley riders disappear in the mirror in a futile effort to catch Kawi-King of the road. Nope only one reason to buy this bike and that is because on some level you are a nonconforming member of society who will use the power sooner, or later. If anyone says different then I would be inclined to believe they are trying to get into a club they do not belong in. We would not want that virus jumping into our midst from the wanna be leather clad so called bikers we all despise now would we. You know the people I am referring to the ones who buy either an exotic import bike and cannot lean it far enough to come anywhere close to ever dragging a knee or the ones who buy a Harley or a high dollar custom V-twin and have enough name brand clothing on to look like a display in a cycle shop window, but damn near drop the bike at stops or cross the lines all over the road because they cannot ride. So if you bought the bike just to look good an I find out, I will do all I can to shame you out of our family.

When I ride on club rides, even the HDs speed... some.
Every chance I get I blow past 100 mph. It hasn't been that long since I ran 200 mph side-by-side with an F40 Ferrari on CA 280 just north of San Jose exits. Had CHP seen me, I'd have gone right to jail, do not pass go.
I don't get many chances now, because of where I live. Lots of pretty good rural roads, but also lots and lots of farmers with their vehicles (both cars and farm equipment) moving across roads from field to field.
I can ride for 30 minutes and not see anyone, then the next hill or curve I pass reveals mom in her chevy pickup wanting to pull out onto the road at like 3 mph. If I'm going 20 over I see her, and pre-react. If I'm going 60, 70 over, chances are by the time I see her, its too late.
I don't think its so much about the speed, as it is about the common sense.

lets face it we dont buy these bikes thinking about the speed limit. dont think theres a sportbike of any size out there that wont surrpass the posted speed limit in first gear.now that doesnt mean we cant ride sensably but cmon if someone says they ride the speed limit all the time got to make you wonder. ive been just cruising down the highway thinking it just a nice cruise then glance at speedo and realize im doing 100mph these bikes are so smooth it just dont seem like your going that fast officer...lol

When I first bought this bike, I was thinking I'd stay within the speed limit. I just wanted something that was bad azzz and could stomp all over anything with two or four wheels from stoplight to stoplight. That all went out the door when I hit 120 on the way home from the dealer. These bikes are made to go fast, 130 on a 14 feels safer than 70 on my cruiser. Admit it, there's a little bit of hooligan in every 14 owner. If you can keep this thing under the speedlimit I salute your self-restraint.

Brand new 1098 Ducati parks at my gym, chicken strips are two inches per side....no kidding! Why buy a machine like that if your not going to push the envelope a little in the corners, that's it's reason for being.

I like to push mine to my limits when I can, commute to work on it a lot though so passing traffic on the interstate is the best I get most days (some days it makes me think I should have got a C14 instead ).
It's great to be able to give the throttle a little twist and pass cagers like they are sitting still, never could do that on my cruiser. Every once in a while I get to take the back roads home past Pinnacle Mountain, Wye Mountain, and Toad Suck park... it's a great day when I get to do that. I hate wearing out the center of the tire on the interstate, makes me wanna...
On the interstate I try to keep it within 10 mph unless I'm passing, on the back roads I pretty much take it as fast as I can.

WTF is a speed limit.......................................

To be fair you can drag a knee on a zx14 all day also but you don't see that to often either. When is the last time you ran your zx14 to 186 mph on the street or ran a 9 second 1/4. The bike can do it

I'm sure there are some big guys going 9s on stock zx14 on this forum with out pipes and straps.
Who are they? Anyone over 200 lbs running in the 9's on a stock height 14 sound off and post your time slip.

Hey Kruz,
I may not be 100% of what you are referring to but I weigh in at about 230-235lbs in leathers with helmet and I have cut a 9.83 @ 145.5 mph on my 08'. Although my bike was strapped, the suspension is at stock height. I do have a full pipe though and I'm -1 on the front sprocket. To be honest, I think I'd do better with stock gearing.
My best time unstrapped was a 10.20 @ 142ish.

Yea Beond, I meant with a strapped front end, most guys will use a lowering link in the rear as well. That's not bad for a guy your size with just pipe and a strap. I think Rot had to get a turbo before he could get into the 9's but then he's reaaaaaaaly BIG! LOL!
