Battery Tender how to ?
07/13/09 2:33 PM

Well yesterday took the 14 out for a 100 mile ride,,, very nice day

I got to a friends house,, I let the fan run on the bike for 10 mins or so. Got on it,,,,,blhhhhhhhh blahhhhhh

Dead battery. He suggested to jump start it down this big hill,,, and I think I memebr reading its not good to do,, but I did. A couple clutch drops,, and it sounded like it wanted to run,, but didnt.

So at the bottom of a 800 foot hill , I call him and he brings cables down to jump it off his suv.

He did say this isnt a good idea,, but Im in a spot here. So I undid all the fairng parts,, left side first,, then the right, to see if batttery would pull out,,, yes my book is on the coffee table, as I was brushing up on the bike.

Nothing on the right side, but the throttle cables,,, so back on fairing,, and over to the left side of the bike.

He did say, Im not going to have my suv running as it might fry your connections/battery...

An walaaaaaaaa,, it fired up.. and yes the next 20 miles home I slipped clutch big time as not to accidently stall it.

So now Im looking at a battery tender WITH the connections attached all the time,, easy plug and play.

I searched around and didnt see any good how to's . Can somone please show me how to hook the battery tender up , and have the conncetion ready to go all the time?

Thanks in advance.

I hooked the positive to the battery and the negative to the grounding post tucked some of the cord up on top of the battery and ran the plug down by the bottom edge than put the cover back on.Hope this helps a little.

On my Battery Tender Plus, it says connect both leads of the "pigtail" directly to the battery posts. So thats what I did.

During riding season I just tuck the pigtail in beside the battery. When its time to cover it up for the winter, I take the battery cover off, pull the lead out and put the cover and cowling piece back on. Then sit the Tender on a small stool beside the bike, hook it to the pigtail connector, and cover the bike up.

Works like a charm, with sta-bil in the gas and fresh oil in the crankcase, good antifreeze in the radiator, and hydraulics all full to spec. She fires up first try when its time to take her out of hibernation.

I think next winter I'm just going to leave the battery cover and cowling section off, and put them in a bag until its time to ride again.

Me-just hooked the pigtail onto the battery(as per the instructions).Ran the pigtail over the ground post on the frame under the fairing there, and down into the crankcase open area there.Fits nicely, virtually unseen, and after every ride I plug in to the main tender lead.(batteryTender Jr.)No removing anything-ever.And no,she won't start OR run with anything less than about 12.8-13.0 volts(but she will crank over).

..There ya go!Goes up under the foreman grill, over the ground lead(on the frame under there),and the two leads connect to positive, negative battery terminals!Easy!!The pic shows it plugged in to the tender lead.(going down).

I let the fan run on the bike for 10 mins or so.

I know this is off topic but I'm just wondering how many guys do this ? Thanks.

Thanks Blue,,, So does that one end just sit there and flopp?

I was kinda looking for a pic,,, I know you dont have your cover off,, of the actual hook up.

The last few days I have just been firing the bike up. It will show 11 volts then ilde for a while and get up to 13 volts if I remeber correctly.

Well, the plug right there-I just tuck it back behind that fairing there. Can't even see it.When ya install the pigtail to the battery, you can "adjust" the lead length however much you want. You can see it when you get the foreman off there.Using the batterytender, when ever I start my bike,it's always at 13 volts or so-when riding around- 14.2.(but never below 12)That tender really works well.I think some guys connect the ground lead of the pigtail to the frame.HOWEVER-I'm pretty sure the instructions say to connect the ground lead to the negative battery post, and the positive to the battery positive post. For a "jump" start, you can connect a jumper negative lead to a frame ground, instead of the negative battery post.(I've used the brake pedal for the ground when I had to jump mine one time).

I've never heard of this. How much benefit can the fan provide if the water pump isn't running?

More to the point, I don't see the need for it - there might be a temporary temperature spike at shutdown but I think it's all within design specs and running the fan is just asking for a dead battery for no good reason.

You are right. There is no good reason to run the fan after the engine is shut off.

I got the Shumacker hooked up about 3 days ago.

How long does it take for the yellow light to go out? Thats the charging light.

It was all dead 3 days ago, and I jumped it and then had a 125 mile ride. After the ride I hooked up the tender.

Yellow charging light still on. Does it take 3+ days for it to reach a full charge? Or Am I in need of a new battery?

The bike is a left over 2008,, so it sat for about 1.5 yrs on the showroom floor.

Thanks all.

What's your LCD display showing for "battery voltage".At least you can get an idea of how much it's charging.I don't have a Shumaker-can't say about that one.You MIGHT need a new battery. That's a long time to be sitting without a boost. What was your voltage reading DURING your ride?

Hi Blue,,, it gets to about 13.7volts or so,,, when ridding.

I havnt turned the key over in 2 days,, so I dont know where it sits now.

Im about to take it out after work here. I guess its a good idea to unhook the trickle charger before you fire it up , right?

Thanks.

Went for a little ride and it started at 14 volts... then settled to 13.7

Should be good to go..

Its a trickle charge, not a full blown battery charger.... mine has a connector at the pigtail that I just plug the tend cord to... and when ur ridin it doubles a power source for my heated accessories!!

I have set mine up similar to blue07's picture above, except I ran mine up in front of the tank so I can plug it in to power my tank bag when I am running. That way I can use it to charge the battery when I am not running and can power and charge my accessories when I am riding.

Silvrevo, I run my BT pigtail up to the triple-tree as shown in the Aprilia photo below. A lot of good information on the Aprilia forum link found HERE (scroll down). I also have my tank bag "electrified" the way the Aprilia owner shows in the link. Check it out. A lot of great ideas to be found.

The problem with the picture, above, is the pigtail's connector is pointing up, so it can fill with water, and corrode. If you put it exposed like that, you better find a way to cover it well enough to keep moisture out of it.

I would double check connections at the battery, at the stater relay and main fuse area, that's close to the battery.
Almost sounds like a bad connection.
With the voltage on the display, looks like the bike's charging system is OK. May have just a bad battery too. A bad cell will mimic a bad connection and not take a full charge. Maybe that's why it took so long for the tender to charge.

Privateer, there is no problem with water. Most SAE/BT connectors come standard with a cap to use when not in use. This particular user/pic doesn’t show one (as you pointed out) but can easily be rectified. Mine has a cap that I hang/tuck next to the connector with an attached cord. Most BT/SAE connectors products from Powerlet or Battery Tender come with the necessary cap to keep water out.

My Battery Tender Plus' pigtail also has a cap on the connector, when you take it off it remains attached by a short plastic leash. So I know the pigtail connectors have caps, but....

I was just commenting on what was visible in the picture, since it was the only source of information available about that particular installation, and the cap isn't visible (or I missed it).

good luck to ya'. i picked up mine last week, a 2007 model. everything looked good on the dash, showed charging at over 14 volt. about 200 miles later I stopped for some gas. when I tried to restart it, absolutely nothing. put a meter on the batt and it showed 7.2 volt. I guess between sitting and the heat getting to it the end came quickly. new battery and all is good

Well, if the battery is bad, nothing is going to bring it back. :)
