Advice on a tail bag
04/09/13 3:45 PM

Here goes, I hope this works ;-). I bought the green 14r last summer and am wanting some advice on a tailbag. I figured I would keep doing most of my trips on my Softail custom, but I have found it hard not to get on the 14r when I ride. I had been off the sportbikes for about 15 years, and I guess I had forgotten just how much fun they were to ride. I like the looks and capacity of the Firstgear Silverstone tailbag. I want one large enough to at least do an overnighter. I may do saddlebags too, but it looks like my factory mufflers are too long for a saddlebag. Any advice ???

I roll with a backpack... I know it's not for everybody, but honestly the thought of some bag - tail, or tank damaging my paint is enough to sway me in the direction of the backpack, and again only when I am going away for an overnighter. Otherwise, I just take what i need - wallet, phone, keys.

Does the backpack stay comfortable on a long ride, say 400 miles or so in a day ???

I've had a great experience with the kriega US40 set. I use a single bag for commuting, and have used the full set to pack for long weekend trips easily. I wouldn't hesitate to buy them again, I've 'tested' them at excessive speeds and in heavy downpours with no issues. They're also easy on/off the bike.

My wife and I did a 6 day 1100 mile trip with a large tankbag and a pair of sportbike saddlebags. They sit pretty high so I don't think they would interfere with stock pipes. They have straps that go under the seat with other straps to anchor them to the passenger footpeg brackets.

Friend of mine has an OGIO backpack...says it's VERY comfy and unobtrusive...looks like that one there in the pic above.

I feel the same way and is the reason I travel with a backpack.

Last summer I rode my bike to the Summer Nationals in Budds Creek Raceway in Maryland, 425 miles round trip. On my backpack I carried my three cameras, GoPro, Panasonic Camcorder, Sony Digital, plus my 25 year old Slik old school heavy-duty tripod. I only had two problems, rain and that I didn't had a cruise control on my bike at the time.
