Once again at the track
09/11/21 10:50 AM

Been a heck of a year with cancellations and heat and stuff but Yesterday I finally made it to the track last nite to a Street legal which is basically just a practice nite .. I had pulled my swing arm and went back to stock since stock wheelbase was my original goal ..I ran a 9.67 then a 9.47 which was teh best I had previously done SWB..Speed was still 150 plus so I know I have a better et in teh bike . I just have to get learn how to ride :).

Good job!
I still haven't gotten around to putting on a kill switch or getting my full leathers in order to run at the tracks near me. I guess at this point it I will make sure I'm ready in the spring.

I really do miss being able to run at the track and see numbers.

Had a go last night at Sacramento wed nite fun stuff . Track was in very good shape. Difficult to lift my foot out of the sticky stuff while positioning bike :) ..Second run was best at SWB of 9.442 so that made me happy and then 154.95 mph which was also best mph . Then I started having problems with clutch not disengaging to down shift at end of run..THEN I could not get bike in to neutral and then, on teh next run, I had to hold teh bike at teh lights ,with teh front brake or it wanted to crawl.. Figured clutch needed looked at so packed up and came home..This morning I had to pry the plates out of teh housing ~! Every steel was toast ...Shame on me for poor maint..Four years or more or racing with approx 250 passes and 26000 Street miles. I had to pry the plates out ....

Normally we have 30 plus minutes minimum, between runs but very few entries last nite so it was less than 15 minutes. Clutch never got a chance to cool and I was glad it happened last nite ..I have a special event this weekend and last two points races next weekend ..

If it was that bad, and the fibers are not there either, that's to drop the pan for sure so as to remove all that clutch dust that settled in the bottom. Run OEM or I told you so is you showed me 250/26k shows the proof.

My battery in my digital caliper is dead but The present fibers are exact same teeny lines as the set of fibers I have that have 500 road miles on them ???

When I broke teh Star shifter 4 months(?) ago, we pulled teh pan and check teh screen for debris. It was clean at that time. No indications at all of excessive wear at any time.. I do change oil and filter a lot .. Maybe every fourth event and on the road no later than 3000 miles .

And yeah OEM Filters and Clutch parts and kaw Full synth 10-40.

If yo recall..I think the reason the star shifter broke was my foot getting in the way during auto shits ..or...cable out of adjustment after a couple of years and not pulling arm completely

I'm just too anal when it comes to racing. Especially if it was my bike and your ass. I'd be top fueling the oil pan every round just to check things out before I'd put my rider in harms way. That kind of anal.

Meanwhile, I'd sand off a tiny spot on one of the the clutch outer forks. I'd then take a scribe and drag a line on the pressure plate that sits at the end of that fork. With oil cap off, the fork with the nail polish comes around moving the engine around, and I pull the clutch lever, bring the pressure plate around with the scribe mark, line it up with the painted fork and watch how deep it goes from the scribe you made.

My point is, see how the pack shrunk from the fiber wear and that is more or less powder; if we had a dry clutch/brake pad dust ~ floating in the oil at one point. Then that gray mud forming on the pan is a combo of clutch powder and general wear. No matter how much of that cake is forming at the pan due to the plates losing the pack, I want it out of there.

Yes, it [the cake] stays packed eventually, but if the oil is coming out anyway, it's more you're also looking up at the rod caps and checking for bluing; and a hand rocking just to feel things out. Plus, my rub both hands together, which gray matter is added to the dust? That means all new frictions and steels. New against new, not new against used that still specs out? Not me.

I'm still impressed about the longevity of the OE parts you put on it. That's a fair field test, because I doubt you beat the bike having all that riding/racing experience. More or less, 'pleasantly worn out parts.'
_________________________________________

Ah, just popped in my head... Same paint, same scribe mark, but this mark is at its wear point. Now scribe the pressure plate. Once the new pack is in, where is the wear mark now? It's way out there away from the fork end, right? Now you watch that meet the fork and you know you're getting close to a new pack again. Yeah, you could move the pp over and scribe the full pack next to the worn scribe mark and watch both heading for the fork end... If I were drag racing my bike... no batteries needed.

Hub, first of all.. I truly appreciate your input even tho some of it is lost on my poor unkowlegable brain :) If nothing else, I or my bike rather, is proof of just how tuff these machines are cause I am barely capable of changing a clutch pack . Plus, it seems that the older I get the more I consider how many passes I have left and is it worth the extra effort.. That probably makes you cringe but I have to be honest with myself.. I did not even successfully change my star shifter when it broke and had to get a new one and have my sponsor shop change it.. If I had had more time He would have been doing this and would have checked at least most of what you have suggested. I only had two days between races and overniting parts means time was tight . He is very busy and I try not to cut into his shop time even tho when he finds out about this lil episode he will probably give me fits for not taking the bike to him LOL
Anyway, dont give up on me cause this old dog is still learning a lil bit once in a while ..

Bottom line for now is fresh oil/filter steels and fibres and let er rip :)

Some more info..I broke the star shifter less than 8 races ago and at that time TEKMOTO ( sponsor) pulled pan and eyeballed rods etc. He was quite surprised at how well everything looked including lack of debris of any kind . He found a crack in teh basket that I would never have seen with my vision . Two more weekends of racing and he gets to go inside motor for good looksee and mabey a lil playing around. Providing it does not blow up before that ;)

Went to Sacramento fun race last nite ... Now in the 9.3s ( 9.373 ) Bike is just amazing . pulls the front end on auto shifts in 2nd and 3rd . If the old guy on board could get his act together, this bike has at least another 4/10s in it , I do believe . Went four rounds of eliminations before I broke out .. Had to give a guy on a victory 5 sec lead.

Great run chrly. You're getting faster all the time.

I love those little mirrors on your bike. How good are they on the road?

Also, what size rear sprocket are you using?

Thanks.

Again, good job!

Thanks guys..today's point race only had 4 contestants but I did manage the win..shud put me slightly ahead in track points for 2021 championship..one more race tomorrow..Could NOT keep front end down during 2nd and 3rd shifts during qualifying so times were miserable 9.60s.got ready for eliminations and had to do something ..I usually run with a gal or less fuel but going back to stock wheelbase , it is really hard to keep the front down so..

I added 3x1/2 gallons of fuel ....problem solved . The extra 22+ lbs fixed the problem, at least today.. we shall see how things pan out tomorrow.
Gearing is 16/40
The mirror are strictly for the track. They allow ne to see opponent if we are very close. I can see straight across the track.

Hub , I ordered new fibres and for kicks, I will do the scribe mark prior to changing . Cool tip thank you..
Clutch appears to be holding ok . I did not do burnouts and ran 9.5 and had to back off 2nd gear wheelies.

We ran a dble header to finish out our points races. season is done ..... Raced Saturday and Sunday .. Won both and garnered enough points for 2021 Motorcycle Championship . I really have to work on settleing down to start off .. I began the weekend at 9.6 and finished with last race at 9.38 . I need to START at 9.3 :). That was my best with stock swing arm, btw..Maybe that 8 will be there for me next year..

I hope to make some winter races but nearest 1/4 mile track is Chandler Arizona, 845 miles, so going to be a squeeze to slip it in between work unless the schedule gets messed up and I have some long weekends . It would be great to get some time in against the fast guys as that seemed to help on the few times I have ran against some one .

The bike continues to make up in the last 1/8 mile for what I mess up in the first 1/8.. I gain 30 mph in teh second half where as most NA bike gain 20. As I get more practice in I will start changing gearing but I have to get comfortable with what I am running now ,17/40. 17/42 is stock. Anyway.. A very good finish for the year..:)

Congratulations Chrly!!! So happy for you. It seems some days I'd throw the clutch and my first run of the day would be the best, other times I could chip away at it and make little gains. It's nice you at least have the option of traveling to another track to run if you so desire.

Thanks Rick. Right now we have a river of rain flowing in from the coast ( bay area) and too much water on the roads to head anywahere.. Lake Oroville came up over 6 feet in 48 hours..Next thing you know we will be under threat of flooding again :).
Been here almost all my life and have learned to live with it ..

Lots of family stuff happening lately but managed to get in two races this year so far ...Bottom line....The ol' green machine just continues getting better numbers ..Today at Sacramento first run of the day , posted my best et so far . 9.254 and ended the day with my last during semi-finals at 9.25.. and that was coasting thru the traps cause I was pretty sure I was going to break out...I did :)

I am 7937,obviously..

So was this with steel cuts facing into the engine? I'd just be out there trying to beat myself and the clock. Breakout is cherry picking, no?

Hub I had dialed a 9.28 but the run felt really good so when I saw opponent chop , I caught him and closed the throttle , just in case. I Had ran a 9.254 earlier in the day and the rest of teh runs had wheelie problems .. I was winning rounds cause opponents were screwing up or breaking out I usually slow down in the afternoons so I dialed a 9.28 .
He had to chop too as he ran a 9.39m on a 9.38..We both had outstanding runs..

And yeah if i had not chopped , I would have been at least in 9.1s so close to me 8 :)

Oh yeah.. steels in with smooth facing out :)

Feb 5/6 At Sacramento
Sat Test and Tune had five runs in teh 9.2s and 9.3s Still learning and scraping off those thousands . 9.250 ET over teh weekend and then this came out of nowhere for top speed so far ...

Now if only I can learn to ride it ....:) Still stock wheelbase and motor.
I did manage to win first round of eliminations but then too excited, too much throttle and lost second round .

2nd round

Two weeks till teh next effort..

PS.. Weighed the bike at teh track ..Bike weighed 540 pounds FULL of fuel to teh brim . My weight ready except helmet was 138.
