Pulling The Trigger
06/04/23 1:25 PM

Looks like I'm buying another sportbike, 2020 BMW S1000RR M, 5200 miles, immaculate condition, has M package, Race PRo Package, BMW carbon fiber wheels, front and rear BMW carbon huggers, Akrapovic Full Titanium system, Bren Tune Stage1, M front brake calipers, M seat, M rear sets, M levers, BMW Race Chain, GoPro Mount, BMW carbon fiber tank cover, BMW carbon fiber cockpit fairing, upper and lower radiator guards.

That's my '16 KRT behind the S1000RR.

Why would someone off a bike with 5k on it? I think those bmw's were throwing rods thru the cases yesterday at MotoAmerica? I had a rod go thru the top case, not out the bottom or I'd be dead. Happened on the Daytona banking. Gotta give one of those impression write ups. Ape is going to hate you, you know that, right?

Hub, his three year warranty ran out a month ago, the owner is meticulous in his maintenance, only reason I am buying it from him. He's a riding friend so I hope he wouldn't screw me. The bike literally looks showroom new.

DMV know you by your first name? What's the fleet number now? I can't keep up. Those photos show a really nice product from bmw. I'd still tear open the oil filter and inspect the pleats. Have fun with it.

Hub this makes nine total in the garage now with the addition of the '21 RSV4 and '20 S1000RR, eight sportbikes one cruiser. Jay Leno look out, I'm coming for you...lol!

It's getting a bit crowded in there and I may need to move to a new house with a three car garage or an attached shop if this trend continues.

Time will tell, I am paying a pretty penny for a three year old machine that just ran out of warranty last month but I went all in because of the owner who is one of the most obsessive people I have ever met when it comes to bike maintenance.

He fully details his bikes every time he rides them and has all the latest goodies and upgrades. All major maintenance done by the local BMW/Ducati dealer in Plano.

I was shopping for bikes on Saturday and didn't see one showroom new machine that was any cleaner than this S1000RR, so I'm paying his asking price.

Looking at new 2023 S1000RRs, similarly equipped would set me back around $35,000 out the door, so I'm saving about $15,000 by going this route.

Nice bike. I suppose if they are known to have some issue, which most vehicles do have some sort of common failure, just deal with that issue. "It throws a rod if you do this or that or neglect this or that." Just try not to do this or that and don't neglect this or that.

I think the S1000RR is a pretty well engineered product Vic, any issues are well known now and have been addressed by BMW.

Well Kruz, I was looking for duc to play with, but joining the duc site and answering tech questions to understand the bike's finer points, it's basically a hit or miss bike as far as dependability. Babied V4's have leaks, to where the dealer or district rep calls for an engine change to fix it under warrantee.

On the euro side, they've found 3 other engines needed to be pulled. Factory says no engine available, meaning, the assembly line and the bottom line are first, owner comes second. Any major repair will take over 8 months sitting and waiting for parts.

Other things like a cracked rim spoke. Guy also had a sensor problem they couldn't find. Eventually found it, and tried to charge the owner for more hours the warranty would pay. I chimed in saying no way about eating those hours, then tried to explain no matter how hard the rim took, where he claimed hitting a bump, spin the rim and look at the outer rim, where the tire and rim meet for a dent? No dent, it's for sure warrantee. Still fighting with that one.

Another thread is a 60 count look see, where no one helped to answer, I offered a variable about a cracked stator cover leaking oil. No mention of a crash or drop I'll assume, but to read that about such a piece of shit rotten egg, with a caviar price?

No way hose say. I'm looking for something bulletproof like a Kawasaki, the spoiled me bike. Steer clear. A low miler beware. It means something is wrong with it running wise, or the 1 or 2000 dollar full service interval needed... belt drive that is.

Hub I get it, how I ever bought into this Euro bike bullshit is beyond me. I have 9 bikes right now and 3 of them have issues and all are Euro bikes. 959 Ducati runs super hot and has since day one, regularly hits 203 F this time of year while cruising fast and it hasn't even gotten really hot yet, wait until August arrives! Ducati under engineered the cooling system apparently and the only fix is a $3000 racing radiator. My RSV4 has only 2300 miles and goes through oil like a deep fat fryer. I am told they will refuse to fix it or replace it even though still under useless warranty as I have installed an Akrapovic pipe and race map. Nothing to do with the oil burning issue as it was already sucking oil before I ever installed the pipe and map and Aprilia plasters 54 World Championship and "Be a Racer" stickers all over the bikes but don't dare take it anywhere near a track while under warranty. New BMW I've had only a week and I think the front brake rotors are warped as it shimmies like a pitbull shaking a dead rat under hard braking. Left hand grip almost fell off on Sunday when the stinkin set screw came loose during a ride. I've owned 9 Japanese sport bikes in the past 17 years and none have had issues like this. My advice is to stay as far away as you can from expensive European junk, nothing but problems! BTW, I rode my 2016 KRT ZX-10R this morning and it's a better bike than all three of the Euros combined and like the ZX-14, change oil, filters and brake pads, lube the chain and ride, no drama! Never a Euro bike ever again after this experience!

once a Kawa rider,ALWAYS a Kawa rider.I've riddenother.Nice ones.Harleys.
The 14 class is most definitely least worrisome. It has excellent power that can be enhanced nicely. It'll run all day.
great handling set up right. It's big enough to have a presence in traffic, yet small enough to lane split and ride more than big sweepers.
I have one,and ONLY one complaint. After all the years of building bikes,WHY couldn't Kawi come up with just as smooth a gear shift as it's rival...der buka.Suzuki's got it totally right. At least on their badgirl haya.

Where I ride, which is fast twisties Grn, my venerable old ZX-14 will still hold it's own against any literbike and I'm talking RSV4s, Ducati V4s and BMW S10000RRs. I'll happily run the 14 against anyone out here on any bike, I love the look on their faces when I carve under them in a corner. Mother Teapot got this bike right and I'd buy another one in a heartbeat if they would revive the old bike with modern updates, brakes, suspension, electronics etc. I looked at a new 14R recently but it's not really my cup 'o tea, too big, heavy and bulky for my taste although no doubt it makes serious power. I've done everything I can do to lighten my 14 over the past 17 years, next step would be carbon wheels like on my S1000RR, it makes a huge difference everywhere, turning, accelerating and braking but it's just too much money to spend on such an old machine.

Interestingly Grn, my old 14 has a slick gearbox, I do clutchless upshifts by just backing off the throttle a touch and it snicks right into the next cog. If KHI had kept the original 14 concept but lightened it and upgraded the components it would be an incredible machine but everything keeps gaining weight. I'm probably not their target customer who wants comfort and lots of electronic do dads, I like things simple.

The 14 is hard to beat. To me, even as old as the current gen is it's still one of the best looking sport bikes out there. I had A/C service at my house last week, and the guy noticed my 14 and complimented me on it. He asked me how old it was, and his jaw dropped when I told him it was a '13, he said "it looks brand new". Well, it doesn't quite look BRAND new, but it is in really good condition and I told him I just try to take care of it.

But as far as street bikes and street riders go, I've never understood the racer boy wannabes. Not even when I was late teens had had my VF1000F, and people were like "it's too heavy". Now consider, your average ride, was us riding around town in shorts, t-shirts, and gym shoes. The guy with the CBR 600 F2, the guy with the Superhawk 996, etc. I had no problems "keeping up with" on my big ol heavy VF1000F.

I get it, maybe the 600s and 1000s are ... cooler among the right (or wrong) people. But as far as utilization, the average street rider can use 40% of their lightweight supersport? And that would be a lot, video worthy. And maybe your average 14 rider can't use a whole lot more, but probably more. It still makes me laugh when someone says "oh yeah, that's a nice drag bike.", but it makes me cry cause those are probably same people voting for the dookie we have right now.

I get the same thing Vic, my 2006 ZX-14's 17th birthday was yesterday and people still ask if it's a new bike. One of my young riding friends (he was 2 years old when I bought my 14) commented yesterday that the original 14 never seems to age, it's got a timeless, classic look like the Hayabusa. As far as being a drag bike or sport tourer, yes it is all of that but a whole lot more as well, in the right hands it's a serious backroad weapon to this day. It's got a big, torquey and powerful motor mated to a good chassis and decent suspension. Now is it better than my new S1000RR or RSV4? No but it can keep them honest back in the twisties and still deliver unmatched comfort for a long day in the saddle.

+1 on above comments!
got two Gen2 units, a '13 in Indonesia where i live, and a '16 in Southern Europe where i am often holidaying
both places are great for road trips... when i park the bikes, they become an immediate eye catcher and a topic of conversation... even for the seasoned biker crowd riding Harleys or BMW 1200's
... and more than once, people would ask for permission of taking a pic with the green iron horse... definitely a classic!

Hubster, this is on my '21 Aprilia RSV4, burning a lot of oil at only 2300 miles, look at the carbon fluff in the Akra tailpipe. Thoughts?

Kruz, that's pretty much pump gas, more a slow street putting color. If you ran something like R12 race gas, it would show gray and dry, no carbon black. Oil consumption helps with the black fluff, though. That back tire is played out.

I'm sort of sold on book break-in. I babied the last bike and does not burn oil. Duc boys have mixed bikes, meaning some use oil, others are oil tight as far a burning oil. The previous owner probably romped on it before its time. Not worth a hone and ring job. Just keep an eye on the oil level.

Plugs start looking wet, I'd then tear it down, freshen it up.
