Ping Hubster... Tank Slapper?

We had Moto America Pro Racer Brandon Altmeyer leading our Sunday morning group ride on his new KTM Super Duke R, he catches a big tank slapper at 13:32, I was behind him on the red 959 Ducati and thought he was going down for sure but he acted like it was no big deal. What do you think happened, looked like he wheelied and cross rutted in a big ass road crack?

Yes, Kruz, looks like he may have sunk into that groove and that may have started the jump out of it. He was a runner for his time.

I got one for you. Yesterday we had a race event and a BS tire rep was out there selling/sponsoring tires I guess? My buddy sees a cold sheer going around the side of the tire. Pit crew guy said he set it at 33, where the rep said another? Anyway, the rep comes over, sees the sheer and says to add a pound to 34. Rider goes out and scrubs the sheer clean off.

Fucking A, a pound.

That's very interesting Hub, I am running 30 psi cold pressure on the rear Bridgestone RS11s on everything and getting some sheer on all the bikes, I'll see if I can post up some recent tire photos. To be honest I'm no Dave Moss when it comes to reading tires and it may just be normal cold tearing or hot tearing, how do you tell the difference?

Good question. Hell if I know? I'm schooled with something new all the time I go out to the track. I think it has something to do with the air temp outside. It was pretty chilly both days, and that condenses the air and drops the air pressure. So figure 34 off the warmers, then out cooling off racing thru that cold air. I should bring my temp gun next time.

I think they called for 29 at the rear hot off the warmers. That showed no problem. I'll pick the rep's brain for a few answers next time out. That or next time being called into the shop, I'll ask my buddy.

Strange, but when I went to the winner's circle, looked at 1st place's front tire, it was like new. But that was a full on race slick, no grooves like we used.

Hell, go a pound up or down at a time with cold tires. See if it helps to scrub away the sheering. Two out of the fleet is one day a pound down, the other bike a pound up. Who cleaned up better?

Question, does your duc have any kind of axis telemetry? Guy was telling me you're leaned over, back end wants to kick out, but it intervenes so you don't. Don't remember the year of the bike he rode?

Hub, here is the Aprilia RSV4 rear tire, Bridgestone RS11, 30 psi cold on the road, no track rides on this tire.

You might run this by your tire rep and see if I'm doing something wrong, all my tires wear this way including the Pirelli Supercorsa V3 rears on the 959 and ZX-6R, RSV4 is the worst as it has a lot of torque.

The 959 has an Inertial Measuring Unit or IMU controlling traction control, the Duc is relatively easy on the rear tire.

That looks pretty normal. I have a BS chart that shows the hypersport runs 33F wm3.00 or 30F wm3.50. Rim width at the rear are 29R wm4.50 or 26R wm5.50. These are all cold number settings.

I should have shot the tire to show the tear. It was a band around the tire, say an inch wide at the most tear. Yours shows no tear.

So if your wm is a 4.50 you're just a pound off to show a tear or your 30 is the sweet spot.

Shoot the front and see what that looks like. Maybe a hint of a tear?

OK thanks Hub, I'm probably very close to the correct suspension and tire pressure settings then.

The front is showing smooth wear down to the edge at 31.5 psi cold, no tearing evident and I'm getting decent mileage at 1500-1700 miles out of a front RS11 with soft compound.

I run really soft tires front and back, so wear is going to be relatively high but it's cheap insurance compared to taking an asphalt sample which can become astronomically expensive as I found out several years ago.

I rotate the bikes so a rear tire swap comes up about once a year on each, fronts every 1 1/2 years.

Expensive but what isn't in these times?

Upper photo taken about one year ago showing RSV4 front tire wear pattern, this was the OEM Pirelli Super Corsa SP at 31.5 psi cold. Lower photo is with the Bridgestone RS-11, similar wear pattern and same cold pressure but it looks like I'm cornering a little more aggressively now.

Well, the top one looks like 1st place's profile, the bottom one looked like you just started to warmed up the tire and just started to remove material. Bike doesn't wiggle around, pressure looks like no problem.

State law has changed here. I think any kind of high speed is going to mess with your license, and the hook is a given. Not too interested in throwing it in a turn these days, being only canyon out or in is passing the gumball machine coming around the corner.

Thanks Hub, could be the difference in compound between the Pirelli and Bridgestone fronts, Pirellis seem to wear a bit better and last longer. Also I'm throwing it in a lot harder now, scrubbing speed on the corner entry with the front tire losded up to hit the apex and the roads around here are chip sealed so it chews up the the tires.

Yep, watch out for the gumballs for sure, is it legal to run radar/laser detection in Cali? I run a Uniden R3 with GPS, won't leave home without it.

Same front tire on the 959 Ducati, wear looks very similar to the APE.

Uniden R3 setup on the Aprilia, the PlugPhones plug into the R3's com port, block out wind noise so you just hear the radar alert status.

I believe you are right. Buddy mentioned most used the same numbers but Pirelli calls a different number. Legal yes, but you know WOT, I stopped that shit long ago, or say 4yrs ago. Insurance tagged me for too may tickets. Played out my go to school card. So It's speed limit only and stay to the right these days. Cars pass me I catch them at the light or off ramp. Plus, I know all their hideouts coming and going.

But when no one's looking?
