steering head

Got some new stands recently and was going to try out the head lift adapter today since I was changing the oil, but when I looked under to see where the pin needs to go there wasn't a hole of any kind? Just a big washer looking thing with a threaded bolt coming down through it. Does this mean I got to remove the bars and head to remove that washer and bolt to expose a hole for that pin? I sure hope not. Thanks guys!

NO....there's a hole that goes up through the steering shaft. It's there....I swear it is!It's gotta be,cause I installed a stem cover...the long rod went all the way down and out the bottom of the shaft. The black cover that has the three horn mount bolts....right in the center of that. There's a cutout right there. Now, I don't remember IF I removed a bolt outta there, but if one is in there..then ya...you need to get it out.The manual isn't showing a bolt in there. It's showing the cover, but no bolt in the recess(?).If there's a bolt, you just unscrew and there's your lift pin hole.

Thanks Blue! I got the GPI stands and I swear I looked everywhere under there and saw no hole of any kind in front of the horn. There was 3 small nuts I guess for the cover and this big washer looking thing exactly where I expected to see a hole. Got a #15 pin and was ready to roll, but lost the wind in my sails when I looked under. Just eyeballing it made me think I am going to have to remove the bars and screw the bolt out I saw going through that washer looking thing and hopefully exposing a hole. I felt crazy not finding it when I looked under there, but I will look again in the morning.

You're in the right spot(but not in "front of the horn",right there where the three cover bolts are...right in there...there's a large hole in the plastic cover plate. There's gotta be something there.Try this....get ya a LONG narrow screwdriver.Okay.Slide er down that steering shaft.Anything hanging it up at the bottom? You could probably look down in there with a flashlight and see what it is.It's possible that it's just some sort of "cap"that ya push up in there to keep the dirt out.If so,you could most likely just "carefully" tap that baby out?Now ya got me wondering. But it's most likely a bolt screwed into the "lift pin hole" that is already designed into the steering shaft.Shit....I couldn't let this one go overnight! My shaft was open all the way...it had to be to slide that cover screw down through there and fasten the lock bolt on the bottom!

Yeah...unscrew that bolt...that's yer factory lift pin hole!Voila...you solved it!Can't be any other way...right?

I will give that a try Blue. I got her apart cleaning the filter so it would be a good time to snoop around. Thanks!

Might be a dumb question but you mention using a #15 pin with your GPI stand. I have a Pitbull stand and it uses a #14 pin. I haven't had to use it yet. My 14 is an '07.
Are the pins sized so either manufacturer would use the same size pin or does pin size vary by manufacturer? And what's the difference between a 14 and 15?

OK. I haven't used mine yet and I'm in no hurry to either.
It just hit me as maybe odd that the pins are different. Maybe it's just a manufacturer difference.
Pit Bull listed a #14 on their site and the guy I ordered with confirmed it. Since I've never used a stand before like these I have no idea how well the correct pin fits. I suppose if it feels funny you'd know something's wrong? Maybe it won't go in at all if it's wrong? Feeling stupid here.
I was hoping someone who has experience with these stands could let me know what the difference is from a #14 to a 15 pin. Diameter, length, or ?

I surely don't know KAK...but you could PROBABLY stick that pin in there, see how far in she goes, and how she fits?I can't see any reason it wouldn't work as long as it's stout enough to hold and fit the hole?Long as it goes up far enough, and has enough "shaft" going into the stand...it should be okay?14.15...how much difference COULD there be?
