2012 Nine Literbike Smackdown!
06/29/12 6:50 AM

Something wrong with those dyno numbers...BMW S1000RR 175 RWHP, ZX-10R 172 RWHP?? Somebody must have shoved a hot poker up the ZX-10Rs tailpipe!

http://www.motorcycle-usa.com/9/13481/Motorcycle-Article/2012-Superbike-Smackdown-IX-Track.aspx

Something seriously wrong with that MV Augusta, even the old two smoke GP bikes didn't have a power curve that ugly!

Oops, should have read the article first, they changed to a new format, each bike could be tested with the mfgs. choice of aftermarket exhaust , a PCV and Quik shifter. Makes sense, almopst no one rides a stock literbike anymore.
Looks like the ZX-10R had the winning Superpole Lap time.

The Panigolly only made 169 hp? What happened to the 200hp liter bike? All hype, no show...

The Panigale performed poorly in the track based test, Ducati shot their bolt on this one and came up wanting I'm afraid. A few of the magazines have given it kudos but most are panning it. The L Twin concept is apparently not the hot setup but Ducati clings to the formula, won't abandon it. If I had a hankering for a Ducati, I would have to go with a pre-owned 1198.

If I was going to go new Italian exotic right now, I'd run from the MV and 1199 and go with the Aprilia RSV4 Factory.

BTW, these magazine shootouts are becoming a bit of a joke. The same bike that placed first in one is dead last in another. As I've said before, the current crop of bikes are so close it comes down to rider preference and how many press junkets the mfg. paid for.

BTW, no reflash of the ECU on the ZX-10R, if it had one, it would have destroyed the BMW on the dyno, you can see the effects of the flies closing down above 11,000 on the 10R's curve. It has the most linear power curve of any of the bikes and the midrange looks much stronger than the BMW.

You ain't lyin' there Kruz... I was checking out some of the vids and listening to the testers... in one vid one bike is all that, but in a later vid, the same bike is terrible at this or that. Or, "The ____ would definitely be so in so's choice for a race or track bike" was said by one tester about three different bikes during the same shoot out...

These magazine guys are there for one reason Willie, to sell subscriptions. Every new bike that comes out lately is "all that" and is plastered all over the front covers of the bike rags. Pure hype to generate interest and sell mags.

This thing has run it's course, the motorcycles are all too close to call an outright winner anymore and when you mod them the order changes again. Buy what you like and ignore what the magazines think.

Something else I noticed lately, the tests are either not publishing 1/4 mile times at all or they're getting more realistic.

I think a lot of those literbike corrected 1/4 mile times from a few years back that were down in the 9.6 to low 9.7s were pure fantasy. How else could you explain most of the Motojournalists barely able to break outta the tens on the new 14R, King of the Drag Strip?

Something fishy with those numbers but it sure moves the magazines off the rack.

+ 1, it's too close.
Rode a 1000RR yesterday I wasn't impressed, same thing with the ten, on those machines the low and mid are so weak... it's like never ending foreplay with no orgasm... matter of fact I think I got a case of blue balls lol. I'm going to see if I can try a Gixer or a CBR. I think the RC8 could be the one though that or a previous gen ZX-10.

I love my 10R bit you're right, it has a powerband like a 600 and requires recalibration of the right wrist. Throttle openings that would put you on your butt on the CBR are the norm on the 10R and the traction control mops up the rest.

For immediacy of power it is a hard to beat my '07 CBR 1000RR, it actually out grunts the '08 and on versions down low and has great midrange and topend. Looks much better than the '08 through '11s, in fact, it looks just like the 2012 but with an undertail exhaust.

You need to get outta the General Section more often, Kruz.

lol DON"T DO IT KRUZ!!! Dogo bought John McGuiness' superbike! A 180 + hp widow maker. See how he's extra cautious on accel in the corners and how he gained on those guys in the straight. I bet you that he has about 20 lbs on them but still...

Nice try Dogo thinking that bike could pass as a slipper lol

A 600 Supersport has more than enough power for most roads I ride, I can't hold it wide open except on the longer straights so 180 rear wheel HP is definite overkill. My CBR is pushing 160 rear wheel HP and that is waaay more than enough, if I get outrun it's because the other rider has more skill not a better bike. JMHO

Overkill is fun......agreed....but it doesn't necessarily make you faster on anythng but a straight line. I can go around most corners faster on my ZX-6R than on my ZX-14...just sayin.

That didn't include the two or one piece suit.

Taichi Leather jacket 8 lbs
Sidi Vortex Boots 3 lbs
HJC RPS-10 Helmet 3 1/2 lbs
Taichi GP One gloves 1/2 lb

Total 15 lbs

+ 210 lb rider 225 lbs

Add about 8-10 lbs to that for a one piece suit so 233 -235lbs

One thing I think we can both agree on..... Grn's 14R is the fastest there ever was....!

Couldn't help myself, I had to get a dig in at Grn, no one will ever notice it buried in this thread...kinda undercover....lol!

Sounds about right... Never weighed all my gear individually. Just know that the scale says 245lbs when I'm fully geared up (one piece) including spine protector and armored shorts.
