Gen2, fans faulty
12/09/21 2:31 AM

hi Admin, please let me know if the post shouldn't be here. Thanks.

I haven't met the situation before. when temp reach 100c, I found fans didn't work. I checked the fuse, yes, the 15a fans fuse blew out. I replace it with the spare. Fans back to work. couple of mins later, fuses blew out again. I found it happened when fans started to spin.

I have no idea about electronic circuits. But I can do inspect by myself. any suggestion on my fans? it looks like there is short on fans circuits. I don't know how to tell which one is fail. what should I do to check which fan is down?

Thank you for any help in advance.

happened to me, on a rainy day... i reckon the left fan had a short when riding through the thunderstorm
tried to replace the blown fuse a few times, increased the fuse rating, etc... without success... eventually replacing the fan did the trick
before that when washing the bike, had a routine of using a high-pressure water spray gun to clean both sides of the radiator thoroughly, including the fans... not any more

I think most of us recommend not using high pressure hoses on bikes (as I do believe Kawasaki). Over the years it has been documented to cause many issues by resulting in water getting into places it shouldn't. Bikes (and cars) are not water proof, they are water resistant.

I can recall the following issues from high pressure washing (not necessarily 14s or Kaws)
- water in wiring harness, especially in bikes in condition to where the wiring may have developed small holes or cracks, resulting in intermittent and extremely difficult to track down shorts
- blowing out motor gaskets and seals
- engine finish removal, coating stripped away in large patches
- washing out grease in bearings such as wheels and steering stem

Chains have probably been ruined by high pressure washing too. But I don't recall anyone specifically stating they ruined their chain. My guess is these people's chain maintenance is also an issue, so it might seem normal to replace a chain ever 5k - 10k miles or something.

now we can add caused fan failure

Vic, am aware of how risky high pressure water spray can be on bikes, as such was only using it on the radiator, front & back...
i live in a tropical country, by the sea, with high ambient humidity and lots of salt in the air... when touring, i also often take open deck ferries with the bike, for journeys of up to 18 hours on choppy seas
radiator corrosion has always been a worry for me, hence the spraying ritual... of course the cooling fans would get their share of it, and i reckon this might have caused the failure
but this is all history now, the spray gun has been reallocated to patio floor duties
