oil change
01/29/15 11:33 AM

So I'm going to change my oil on the 14 for the first. Any tips to make it quick. Which side fairing should I pull and do u guys stand the bike up level on a 2×4 and drain it or do u prefer bike stands or neither? I bought a KN oil filter and Castrol 1040 4t will the oil be ok....I've never used synthetics the mechanic at kawi tells me to steer clear of them or changing oil weight. Asking for opinions please.

I put my bike on a rear stand, pull off the L side lower. I ALWAYS use synthetic oil.

I put mine on rear stand however I was able to pull filter and pan bolt without removing fairing which is something sweet I love about the zx14

I have a bad habit of digging into something getting halfway through it then read the tutorial and realized I apparently like things the hard way lmao

I did my oil change in Dec. It was easy and I was so glad I didn't buy Busa. I was kinda between 2014 Red/White Busa and Orange/Black ZX. With Busa, I would have to remove the fairings to reach the oil filter. I love my Ninja!

Yes, and then it still drains all over the headpipes when you take the filter off. PITA but I still like the busa.

jheathman,

Castrol oil is fine, about that K&N oil filter, where was it made ? they got a new vendor that is making
the filters in Mexico, and SOME people were having problems with them, the OLD K&N's were good filters
the people that were having problems were not ZX-14 owners though, just a heads up

First oil change just used the side stand, got a cheap 4" drain pan worked great. After I got my Abba, just put it up on there. As far as fairings, I haven't taken any off for either. Plenty of room to work, I don't even recall having to wipe any oil from the fairing.

Hi Rook,

"but I still like the busa" I know what you mean. The Red/White Busa is still there at the dealer and I am really tempted to get it. I bet the dealer would give me a great deal on it...unfortunately my wife says no and kids support my wife.

haha, I had the darndest time picking which one I liked better so I got both. I would take the 14r in a heartbeat over the Gen2 busa. That Pearl Mira red is a nice scheme though.

So, is KN still good to use or should I now stick with OEM?

For me, I go with OEM. I don't bother with aftermarket filters because I'm concerned that they may not filter as well as OEM. If the filter claims to be high flow, it seems likely that it would not filter as well. My 02.

I have always used OEM filters. Same for the ZX-14R.

OEM branded filters are a safe bet. Aftermarket offerings can provide enhanced or diminished capability: do your research.

Purolator here.

I have used Amsoil filters, but they're spendy, and reviewers say they aren't any better than Purolator. I have also had issues with Amsoil filters leaking on my cars, so I stopped using them completely.
