Great video Rook!
I noticed you shifted mid turn right the turn before you went off. Do you think that had anything to do with losing control? You were kicking ass BTW. Was that blonde on the R1 the bike infront of you???lol I liked the comments too.

Rook:

Was that shudder at 3:20 your rear wheel bouncing? That happened to me a lot before I stopped using the rear brake. Had the suspension adjusted at the track by an expert, but it didn't help. Probably just getting on it too hard, but it's difficult not to.

Glad you had fun. Looks like a nice track. -bg

I guess so...but that is the thing about a damper --you never know you if you need one until you need one. with the HyperPro, you may never know if you have a damper. If it works perfectly, you might never feel any kind of shake if it happens----I guess?

..now that you mention it, I think my damper might have been shut off.

Don't think you can really "shut it off", more of a "loosen it up"... atleast not with my Scotts.
Just rewatched your vid, several times, focusing on your front wheel... looked to me like your damper did exactly what it is supposed to do... more than once... but Hub disagrees...

1. I love watching little kids on ice skates play what the hock is it with that throttle blip?

Ive done that for ever. makes the gear click in perfectly smooth with just a light touch on the shift lever and clutch.

2. What is with watching that guy up ahead?

He was da man. He was showing me markers on the track because i totally ignored them on the first session.

3. That front brake was locked and did you see it start heading for the fork stops? The release-Practice @100mph.

??? have to watch. Locked? Wow, man.

4. What happened here was a non working fork freezer and imagine if you had that thing on and say;
a. Yeah, he was a good rider so fat chance he was going down.
b. Yeah but, he was just lucky, no>
c. No. That was out and out concentration and more instinct than anything, right?
d. What the fuck is it withatrottleshithe WOT!

There was a little luck involved but I like to think instink.....I mean, if you listen closely you can hear a gasp of terror and quick shart against the seat.

This vid is after two laps. The pace was way too slow for me so i did not even bother to put that boring 2 minutes in this vid. after those two laps of warming, the tires felt slippery when I braked or down shifted hard. John, the local dealership VP that sponsors the events and rides in them lowered my tire pressure for me. I think he went down to 38 lbs. It flattened off the center on my trip home...I did not want to bother anyone to use their compressor as they were all loading their junk up.

5. Did I mention that blip up? BAD HABIT #1.

Serious, Hub. You must remember the days of non-syncro meshing gears in cars. They WON"T go in unless you match speed between engine and trans. Same thing works with a bike. Our bikes go in just fine without matching speeds but if you do it, it works even smoother and quicker without jamming it in.

----Or was I schooled wrong driving the old Ford Triaxles?

a. She no smooth.

now about the smooth thing, I have to agree, I am sort of like a crazy legs crane and Wirth, the track instructor I am following pointed that out to me. He used the word "smooth" to describe what I should be seeking to achieve with my riding. That is why he is pointing at the cornering marks that I am missing by 8 feet much of the time.

b. You made an extra move that is not needed.
c. That blip [up] is cut it the fuck out!
d. Perfect shifts down to save the gearbox, yeah, we can argue slam it in or blip it in.
e. Cut the habit out; gotta practice between events.

So, I was not schooled incorrectly on downshifting the triaxles? What part of the vid do you hear such a blip? tell me minutes seconds 3:53.

6. Stop embarrassing the guy up from with the better line staying up with him.

LOL...yeah but I think he would have no problem loosing me if he really wanted to. One of the other instructors assumed that I had a few track days under my belt which I took as a huge compliment.

Incidentally, I know there are a couple other 14 owners that have never been on a liter bike. My geared down 14 just left them on the straightaways-----if they were even close to me in the first place. I was able hang with the smaller bikes in the corners but it took all I had to keep them behind me and that is too much all out for sane, safe track riding or anywhere.

a. Was he close like smell the rubber off his back tire kind of close?

Wirth is much closer than he looks in this vid. It is quit wide angle. Yes, I could smell his brake dust every so often. I would not try to pass him while he was trying to teach me.

b. Close was you trying to catch up and not catching line< Where were they?

I was not trying to pass him but I am going all out in the corners. Obviously, I am not going for max speed on the straightaway in this vid. I don't think he was trying to lose me.

7. You will time-in with others like the video showed you were getting close to that guy.
a. Say yes, you were trying to just haul catching that guy and not taking line because OUCH!
b. Where were they?
c. Ya did damn good for first time out.
d. You get to brag about how close you threw it away but can the fat lady dance?
8. In the right hands it can.
9. Yes or No?
10. Addicting ain't it?

Thanks Hub. things went a little smoother later in the day. Slower though. I got to see how fast some of those other riders were and how agressive they could be not following the 6 foot rule at all. Made feel a little less bad about being a cocky bastage and going off track twice.

No not really. I don't think it is a good practice but with rpm that high, I guess it is better to do a soft upshift than slow down or hit the limiter.

Was that blonde on the R1 the bike infront of you???

Hahha. No that was not THE blonde but that was another girl who was out riding. This blonde was amazingly hot--I mean perfect and sauntering about from pits to classroom in little tight shorts and tank top.....and she was even more sexy with a suit hanging off her hips. She was with a dude of course.

GoPro I got the motor sports package which comes with the suction cup mount and self adhesives. The Contour is worth considering too, I think. There is a thread in Accessories about it.

Up slipping as you release clutch [burns in-slows meaning] as it comes down, rather than match the next gear to rpm. These trannys are out of formula 1 cars of old; trickle down gear boxes. No synchromesh rings needed. These are hair trigger gear to gears. You hardly touch it and she snicks right in. Listen to blue upshift. Watch his left hand. He's not touching the lever. That says the ratio matches rpm don't rev any higher.

Once are out of 2nd, power shift by the fastest [throttle]-lift and back on again, but without the blip. Because, you can't. Leave the clutch up-shifts alone. Speed shift to see it's just and on/off workaday. Did you see how scary straight you made it? If you plowed on the dirt, it would have dug in and high sided you like a slingshot. That, for every snap at the fork stop, it would unload and there goes the Rook Steering in the air have fun!

BTW, Thanks for the vid comp.

Time: 1:20 = 1# GOAL - All that matters is SMOooooooooooooooTThat LINE!

They talk about Joey D hitting the same straw bale every lap at the same turn. I figured if you had to be on par with an IOMan Card, I needed to get just as close or more consistently closer. I like it close too. The wall, the curb. The clip is too fast, but I came out of an apex, timed the car to the apex, timed the other car, come close to the curb as I did to the wall and rail. And at the end, that whip out of the apex was the same film speed. Nice bike, ain't it.

It's consistency you want, Rook. One lap after the other, One wax rail, one snip at the bale.
It's about smoothing out that fast:

1. Consistently trying to be;
2. Smooth, becomes fast;
3. Fast moves faster.

Hub, It is the upshift that you are having a beef with. What is a clutch for if not to modulate one gear into the next?

BTW, HUb, do you think it is essential to change oil after the track day? Just changed oi the night before I did the track dayI think I put ~40 miles of high rpm on the bike + the 160 mile round trip to/from ill-i-noise.

Run new oil on trackday. Play this oil out on the street.

Yes, You are having excessive rev-moves. The throttle has WOT-Lift. What I am hearing from you is the Wot-shift-blip-Wot.

The sequence should be wot-shift-wot. Wotshit Wotshit!

Play this oil out on the street.

There will be other track days at BHF in a couple weeks. Also, same group goes to Road America. Some of the riders do private training sessions. I will be changing oil a lot which is only one expense that will need to be coveredif I kepp pusuing this. If I stop eating tomorrow, I can lose 10 lbs and save enough $$$$ for the next track day.

Duly noted.

maybe that damper did help? (3:16) i don't think I felt any change in the steering. I am out of town now or I would go out and check where I had that dial set.

Listen to the downshifts. YOu don't hear rear wheel chatter. On the upshifts, it's clean, fast, no blip. Stay off the clutch lever on the upshifts. Try it. Gotta ride fast to do it or the clutch comes back in play, meaning, it's too slow if you are not out in the open to let it rip.

I here a throttle blip to match speeds. The chatter you hear in my vids may be decel popping. The GoPro does not record that sound true to life at all.

On the upshifts, it's clean, fast, no blip.

Yeah, sounds good. Almost like a quick shifter (which it may in fact be?). I have some clips from the track day of 600s with electric shifters doing flybys down the front stretch and the sound is amazing. I'm piecing together another vid with those clips and some other stufff from the day.

Stay off the clutch lever on the upshifts. Try it. Gotta ride fast to do it or the clutch comes back in play, meaning, it's too slow if you are not out in the open to let it rip.

You mean clutchless upshifts? Have never done that except one time by accident.

Would like to practice but where? Second gear and i am already going fast enough to lose my license.

Yep. And save second by using the clutch. You can tell I'm saving that one long gap between 1st and 2nd. The other shifts are none-clutch'ed. Find any vid of mine, I save that 2nd gear.

Have never done that except one time by accident.
Well, welcome to the clutchless upshits. No air assist needed. This is all a head game now. More speed, more moves, more precision so you do not chatter or blow a turn.

Would like to practice but where? Second gear and i am already going fast enough to lose my license.
Short fast blips up to 6th. That should get you to the speed limit just like that. Machine gun it. Stay focused in the sequence all 4 things happening at once:

1. Throttle lift and snap it back to the same position.
2. Foot lift happens as one sets the 0, then you set the 1.
3. Mind makes it happen.
4. Watch the idiots when executing!

A couple of comments. Try to get to the inside of the corner, you are giving up half the width of the track by apexing in the middle. Remember to look into the turn and keep your outside arm relaxed. This will help keep the bike to the inside of the turn. And they lowered your tire pressure to 38psi???!! When I raced I was running 28-32 MAX. Maybe a bit more for a heavy bike like the 14.
Glad you didn't bail, keep enjoying yourself!

^^ actually, I was wrong about tire pressure adjustment. I checked yesterday. It was 28 front and 29 rear stone cold. Amazing how much harder it is to roll the bike by hand with that pressure. You would think that would absorb a buttload of hp. Maybe it does but it really sticks. I pumped the tires up to 45 yesterday and now I am afraid to take my favorite freeway ramps fast, even as familiar as I am with them. Funny how fast I got to love low tire pressure. It really squares off quick if you are not on a track though.

next track day is July 27. wed, my day off again. I'm there. Need to weld new catch eye before it wares off completely. This is going to mean a new exhaust by the seasons end. If I am going to burn through exhausts, Might as well get a new bike that can take the corners w/o dragging hard parts.
Old scrape

New scrape. I have since adjusted suspension. Looks like the old scrape zone no longer touches but the eye catch was ground down a bit more and the touchdown area is shifted backward.

Have to focus on getting better form down next time. Maybe I will get a training session in with one of the expert riders in my group. Got a card from one guy I felt was extremely encouraging and upbeat. Maybe I will schedule a session with him.

New tires. Brake pads will be a must for this next one. ch-ching
