Something very freaky happened with the bike tonight and I am pretty sure it was because of the SpeedoHealer I have on there. The engine started cutting out intermitantly. I looked down at speedo and it read ~180mph. I was do ing about 40 mph. WTH? Then the speedo stopped woking and rested at 0 occassionally going up to the speed I was really going.

Then the speed just sat there on 0. The mileage did not change, This was not a dream.

I had just washed the bike with water. I think the top speed recall button must have gotten wet and conatct was somehow made. The bike went into recall mode showing 186 mph while I was riding 40 and tripped the TSL. ?????

Anyone else ever have this sh!t happen to them? Would not want tis to happen at high speed.

I shut the bike down and turned ignition back on. The speedo did the swweep and everything went back to normal. What happened?

Glad that got sorted!Never had any probs with my speedohealer. One thing there Rookster...Water+modern electronic motorcycle goodies...uh...no...they don't play well together."pretty sure it was the Speedhealer"...I know what you meant, but it was probably....the WATER,not the healer. It's fun to get in there and wash everything real nice and purty.I stopped spraying water on anything that had seals or electrics. So basically, only light spraying or hand washing.....the body!Bad thing about what happened with you...and others...once the electrics find a pathway to ground aside from the connector plug....they usually wind up taking that path more and more as the "short" works it's way into the circuit. It's gonna ground via the easiest path...least resistance..which is unfortunately,NOT the plug after a short has started.I don't use any water anymore.I'd pull that speedohealer plug connector and make sure it's completely dry, then reconnect.

Yeah, no water with the seat off for me either anymore. One of these days I need to do a write-up for the SpeedoDRD I have...

Thanks input fellas. I could almost swear I read a thread about this exact problem about a year ago. Some guy had the same thing go haywire and reported the symptoms I had.

The jerky engine cut out that happened 2 times. I did not know if I should shut the bike down for fear of getting stranded on the way to work. An immediate shut down and restart would have cleared it, I believe. Instead, I waited until I got to work and the key off/on speedo sweep seems to have solved everything.

No spray last night for the bath. I just sloshed it with a bucket and cloth. The seat was on. It was dry under the seat where the SH module is located. I guess it was the connectors down at the speed sensor. One is wrapped in tape because the hook catch did not seem quite long enough to lock. Perhaps I will wrap both. I guess it is not too big of a deal as long as I know what is going on and can anticipate. I wouldn't be doing sport riding in the rain anyway..still would not like to have that jerking happen on a slick road.

I do not know what happened to the bike. The fuel cut is exactly what I have heard the top speed limiter does. ? The speedo went up to 180-186 (this was stored in top speed recall of the SH by default). The speedo then quit working but the bike did not seem to be in limp mode.

During instal of SH, I used a bit of dialectric grease on the female contacts of each connector. Good for preventing corosion but this stuff actually conducts electricty, does it not? That will increase liklyhood of a short.

No, it is a non-conductive silicone grease. Good Stuff.

dielectric means - does not conduct electricity
great for sealing electrical connections since it can not provide a ground path. :-)

A great thing to put in your spark plug boot to make sure the boot does not bond to the plug after hundreds on heat cycles, and it keeps moisture out as a big bonus.

Sounds like your bike was just getting errant rpm signals is all. WHo knows what kind of signals it could have been getting. All that thing down there does is count the corners of the drive sprock nut. I thought those connectors on the bike had the rubber seals in them?

Thanks for clarification on dialectric jel.

All that thing down there does is count the corners of the drive sprock nut.

yes but when it gets to 186 (or what ever # corresponds to 186 mph) it trips the speed limiter. If the SH is set to -80%, it will never come close to 186mph so you will never hit the limiter. ....just hope there is no little drop of wayter in there, because -80% wont mean crap then.

I thought those connectors on the bike had the rubber seals in them?

Nope. Just a plastic connector like any other ...unless the rubber is way in there and squeezes up to the other connector when snapped together? If so, one of my connectors does not fully snap. It fits very tight and would even have stayed together by itself but I taped it as a precaution.

Maybe I will take it out and try to squash it together more.

Just reset mine to -8.5% Seems very close at low speeds. The Man has installed radar warnings at the edges of the local school zones. New setting seemed spot-on for 25 and 30 mph. There was a black-and-white taking pictures on the local bypass, and I was gonna ask him to clock me at an indicated 55 to see how close it was there, but by the time I got turned around, he was gone.
