FINALLY!!! FIRST TRACK DAY
04/29/12 6:51 PM

Just completed my first track day weekend with Teampromotion all I can say WOW!! This is the best time I have ever had on my bike well on my R6. Riding on the street has no comparison. They had an introductory rider training class that was included in the weekend. I'm HOOKED!! all I can think about is the next time I can go. I'm wore out though sore and exhausted. The track was NCBIKE in North Carolina it was an awesome time guess my R6 has turned it's last tire on the street. You guys should've warned me that track riding was so addictive!! All I need now is a little guidance bike is basically stock except for exhaust PC5 w/ autotune what should be my next bang for my buck mod?
Thanks.

COOL! You will no doubt get way more opinions about mods on a superpsort forum. I'm sure brakes and suspension are excellent on all the more recent 600s but those would most likely be the things that track riders would suugest you upgrade. As long as you feel you are maintaining control with the braking power you have, I would focus on handling aspects of the bike. Look into a lightweight battery. My Shorai is just over 1.5 lbs. Also loook at lightweight rims. BST rims are the best. I bought Carrazzeria TriRs and they are about a pound-pound and a half heavier /wheel that the BST rims for a 14.

Add 4-5 for rotors you got 10-11 lbs full weight front BST
Tri-R, 12 lb, 6 oz

Total rear, with sprocket carrier: 11 lbs. 1 oz.
BST is 11 lb, 1 oz
I have 12 lb, 6 oz

Here's a good thread and if you click my links in there you will come across more info.

If you can find any parts that were put on for street performance/comfort, ditch it.

Personally, I would be looking for most stuff used. You may crash this bike. It sounds like it's easy life on the street is over. Don't make it a polished gem, let it be the raw animal it always has been on the inside. I saw a couple guys walk away from crashes last track day and now I'm not so worried about it for my body. ...just the bike.

Whether you get a custom set up from a reputable suspension guru, a rebuild from Racetech or forks and shock from Ohlins, my numero uno mod would be suspensions. If you don't get that sorted, you will not have the confidence to push the bike to the limit and enjoy the other mods whether it's power, braking or handling.

Yeah talking to the coaches at the track suspension should be the #1 priority. A lot of them are using racetech the valving is not bike specific you can change it with different adapters to fit different bikes. Really don't think I'll be upgraging more than my R6 150+ on the straights is plenty enough for me. Gotta work on me I've dropped 40lbs trying to drop another 20 and improve my endurance time to start pounding the pavement and put my bowflex to use. There are no suspension shops in my area but the track side vendors will do it. Really don't think I'll be over riding the the stock suspension anytime soon.At my weight I'm in the range of the stock springs I'll be in the beginner group for quite some time.

Welcome to your new addiction, Silver!
And congrats on your weight loss as well... Been "working on me" too. Haven't felt this good (physically) in a looooooooooong time.

Thanks DOGO, It's funny since going to the track all I can think about is going back! Won't be for about a month or so gives me time to work on my R6 and endurance 2 days on the track wore me out! Wish saturdays were not a work day for me I'd be able to go more. Think that the next time I go I will take the beginner class again it's free and might as well use it and the coaches. Well off to take my wheels and tires off to get rebalanced, Dynabeads suck on the track nasty vibration at 140 on the front straight.

Sounds about right... More you go, the "worse" it gets.

I'm taking the beginner level class on the 18th... My 6th track day. Better late than never, eh?

Interesting... I've topped out 14 and 10r w/ dynabeads w/o any vibes... but since making my 10r a designated track bike, I ditched them and picked up a static balancer & some sticky weights. My concern was crashing, spreading them all over the track, and ruining someone elses day.

Bag lunches and lots of water haven't eaten out in months. Seems like all my spare money what little I have goes to go fast parts and track fees!!!

Well completed my second track weekend. WOW my quads are killing me the coaches at the track said if your sore anywhere that's were you should be sore at. I'm aching from the abs down. All in all had another incredible time just so expensive!!! Sides of my Q2's are worn to the wear bars guess its time for another set or something a little stickier had a couple of slides coming out of the hairpin. It was very hot and humid this weekend what do you guys who ride in the hotter temps do to combat it? Really need to work on body positioning though DOGO got any tips on improving that?

Congrats! As far as minimizing slipping, I went to a supersport bike(600RR) for my track weapon(still happens easily on liter bikes)! I have MUCH MUCH more fun on it at the track than I ever did on the 14! The 14 is out of it's element at the track, while it can be done and is still fun, it is nowhere near as capable at a 600-750-1000 on the track.

Thanks BG I'll check it out. Jeffo I ride my R6 at the track I wouldn't ever consider riding my zx14 on the track that's my BABY!!!! I may have been a little too aggressive with the throttle coming out of the last hairpin for the straight. Around 13-14k my R6's throttle is like a light switch. I was trying to get by another rider on a 1k he'd fly down the straights and hold everyone up in the curves. In beginner we can't pass on the inside, only on the outside with a 3 foot gap. I passed him 2 curves before the straight and was making sure he didn't get back by me. Need to really change my gearing -1/+2 that way at the last hairpin before the straight I can use second gear to blast out. Yeah a 600 is a blast to ride!!! Well here I go penching pennies till my next trackday.

AFAIC, if you can afford track days now the timing is perfect in terms of seasonal conditions. Cold asphalt totally destroys my confidence. After attending a track day early in the season, i have determined that there is NO advantage at all. If they sell out positions 9which they usually seem to do), I have just as many riders out there with me but I still need to go slower than I would in the hot weather. Might as well just wait until the the temps are in the 80s, at least.

I take a small clean towel and get it wet with very cold water from melted ice in the cooler, and use it on my face and put it around my neck. It works wonders. -bg
