Reading guages?
01/23/17 12:07 PM

Has anyone come up with a method for making the instruments easier to read during daylight when instrument panel is in hte shade?

Tilting my head is usually all i need to do but I plan on installing aftermarket gauges. DynoTune has nice ones. Expensive and no analog and time consuming to install but that's about as good as it gets for a bike.

Rook, I am talking about riding into the sun so the gauges are in shade . Not sure how you ar doing it but there is no way I can read gear indicator when headed into the sun...

I probably don't! I don't know if there is a way to solve this problem entirely but LEDs would be a lot easier to read than the LCD on the multifunction meter.

Dynotune is LED. Healtech makes a digital gear indicator. GIpro...

That glare is just that. It's the angle of the dangle. A useless instrument when the sun is at said degree. So the fix is to schedule your rides to the reflection there of. That, or run the streets/highway 90/180 degrees the other way. That or whathelll are you looking down there; for what? The bike is so bulletproof, why look? That means you're lucky the speedo is an analog unit, but to read those increments at my age? I use green dots [ink for t-shirts] over the mph numbers so I stay within that range. At night; I do not see the dots at all. You are fighting light [rays] vs. reflection at the eyes more or less.

I couldn't see anything at all on my 10's cluster, took a while but
finally found a customizable RPM LED strip

LED is definitely the way to go.

The unit I'm using does not, only customizable RPM ranges and shift light.

Rook had it right, take a look here at the GIpro X

The Ecliptec rpm indicator is not available anymore AFAI can tell. The Shift-i looks like the same thing. I may try these guys.

Well... If I cant light up the stock unit somehow then the GilproX definitely first choice.

Rook, if I am not mistaken that unit is just a fancy shift lite..Am I missing something there?

It is the Shift-i made by Ecliptech and I believe it was discontinued and it looks like they have
a new model.

I believe the new model is the Ecliptech Shift-P2

Yes, customizable RPM/Shift light - The GIPro looks like just the thing you are looking for.

That is a pretty cool looking shift lite but I have an LED shift lite installed.. The thing is so bright I have it pointed straight up . It is mounted to extra length bolts passing thru the clipon and tehn nutted.
Hard to believe how brite some of these LEDs are...

The Ecliptec has 7 lights you can program to illuminate at various rpm so you see where you're at in the powerband instead of just getting the flash at your shift rpm. Sort of a mini ZX-10 rpm indicator. I think smaller bikes would require this feedback more than the 14 but it is a very cool looking doodad. i dream of making my own LED rpm indicator patterned after the ZX-10. in the mean time, I might go with an ecliptec. ...if i have room LOL

Any chance any of the intelligentsia knows about a hack to display the speed in big numbers on the stock display? The A/D data must be in the speedo but this dumb ME doesn't understand how to get it hacked into a display mode. And I dont want an F16 like fighter gauge cluster likes Rooks setup

The speedo is analog so I do not believe it is possible to use that signal for a digital display unless there is some box to convert it to a digital signal. Messy. You just install a digital sensor and digital gage and you have what you want.

If you tapped the stock speed sensor wire, I do not believe that would provide the proper signal for digital display. If that was possible, it seems likely you would be able to datalog wheel speed from the PC5 without auxillary wiring or user defined input (wire hole). I'm just thinking out loud what I already have thought. I will find out if you can use the stock speed sensor for datalogging this summer but it seems probably NOT at this point. You want digital data or display, you need digital signal.

My analog AFR gauge has a box and I believe that converts the bosch sensor signal to analog before it travels to the gauge.

If you know the speedo is analog then the cluster/display on the R must have the A/D converter to process and display avg mpg and such based on the analog out of the fuel flow sensors. Some of the twidgets at work would know the circuit necessary if I knew the logic and SW for the existing display. Seems like a natural for a hack, sure would be nice to see a big 137 mph at a glance instead of trying to see what the speedo needle is pointed at.

The Gen1 also has average mpg and range. Who knows how accurate that is. It is true that there must be a digital signal for odometer. The fuel flow sensors must be what shows up as injector duty % in Display File Manager datalogging. Injector duty % could be used to determine an exact amount of fuel being used if the computer crunched a couple numbers. in any case, you have odo and % injector flow but that doesn't = mph no matter what math you do on it.

If there is a digital signal for mph as apparently there must be for odo(I'm sure I heard the true odo reading is always stored in teh ECU), it is not accessible to PC5 software. MPH is too valuable of a datalogging channel to not include in datalogging software so I'm betting the signal does not exist in digital form.

If I get busy with an o-scope I should be able to see what sort of input is present at the speedo, it may just be a pulse counter or pulse width measure converted with simple circuit to a voltage proportional to speed for the speedo display. Doesn't help me much at all with a hack to the stock display.

I'm sure the sensor is just a standard Halls sensor with a PWM signal.

Would be fairly easy to make your own LCD speedo off the signal, but
hacking to change the LCD display doubtful and/or not worth the trouble.

I actually have built micro processor LCD speedo's off of vehicle speed sensors
in the past. Ultimately I was using the vehicles speed sensor to control speed
sensitive peripherals. There is really no info on this stuff just have to tap
the signal and clean it up without interfering with the circuit itself.

For now it's easier to just mount my phone with my gps/speedo app.
