I might have done something bad
04/12/10 6:45 PM

After reading the thread on the merits of sliders I decided to take mine off and put on a set of race railz, except I didn't get the race railz brand because they went out of business. I put on the 905 racing brand and thought they looked like total crap so I took them off and put the sliders back on and in the meantime bitched up the threads on one side of the the motor mount, looks like that is part of the head. I cleaned them out and got the bolts to thread in but maybe a quarter of them are missing. I don't think the threads are totally stripped and they tightened up okay but now I feel sort of uneasy about the whole thing.

As part of mounting the rails I also had to remove the long bolt that goes through the rear motor mounts. When I was taking that bolt out I turned the threaded adjusting collar between the frame and motor. I believe it was improper adjustment of this piece that led to the frame failures. I turned it out so it just contacted the frame so when I tightened the nut on the other side the frame shouldn't really "squeeze" in too much.

I'm all freaked out the frame's gonna crack and the motor is going to drop out the bottom of the bike. Yeah I know it won't but after bitching up those threads I don't want to damage anything else. Unbolt some old parts and bolt on some new ones, I thought it would be pretty simple. Oh, and the race rails are for sale.

That explains why I haven't gotten my race ralz and they won't answer the phone. They sure got my money though.

Did you use threadlock?

On the old site one of the guys had posted the Kawi how to instructions with all the torque settings. Maybe one of the guys here still has it ? Hub maybe.

Show photos of the bolts in question. The frame thing is going to be OK, if you say it just touches/butts up against, but not pushes or is forcing into the frame or is moved away from the frame, it should be fine. That number for the butt-up point has stepped down to 10ft-lb I believe. Even at that pound, I'd be setting a light-butt-up-against and call it a day.

If you ran the bolts in and they hold tight, that is one thing. If they spin, that is another. The locking agent is thick and may seem to act as a stripped thread. The photo points can show what torque is needed. I'm clueless on the aftermarket bumpers and where they mount on what bolt?

Yeah I used threadlock. It looks like I lost maybe 1/4 of threads on one side, I'm hoping there was enough left to get a good engagement. I guess worst case I could drill out the old threads get a longer bolt and put a locknut on the inside of the motor mount. I don't like to hack things up but I don't see why that wouldn't work. I figure hub will be along any time now.

Naaaa, you have plenty of thread. A loss of 3 winds vs. 20 wounds an inch or say you look at that bolt, count 5 threads and that should be plenty. Look how much a faucet thread uses and that has to be pulled off or sawed off. You might be thinking this thing can't take a little loss of thread? You would be surprised what little you can get away with and still hold things together.

Within 50/100 miles or less is my guess, you can see that load place, 'rub around the frame' if it is too loose.

Hub, you beat me to the punch. Yes, the front motor mount bolts that the sliders mount with are good and tight, they don't spin and aren't stripped but I don't think I would want to take them out again. I'm going to pull the long bolt and check the spacer between the motor and frame, I'm pretty sure it's where it's supposed to be but didn't know the specs. The head of that bolt has a hex shaped area below the cap that mates with the spacer so it can be adjusted I assume. I don't see how the spacer on the left side of the engine could have accidentally been turned though and I'm pretty sure that one is okay. I was tired,in a hurry and ticked off about those race rails and should have just let it go until tomorrow.

I didn't put them in the for sale section yet but I'd like $125.00 for them. They're beefy and look like they would do a great job the just stick out a bit too far for my taste.
