06 ZX14 with Low RPM hesitation
07/05/13 3:34 PM

I'm having a minor low RPM power issue in 1st gear on takeoffs. I have been searching this website and a few other ZX14 sites with no successful results. I did find one post with a similar issue, but not the same.
About the bike. It's a stock 2006 ZX14R. 20,000KM on it. Stock Exhaust and no computer mods that I know of. I am in the process of trying to find an aftermarket exhaust and a PC-v.
The problem I have is, When I takeoff from a dead stop, When the RPMs are under 4K, it lacks power...after I hit 4K RPM it's like a power band kicks in and the bike comes alive like it should. If I accelerate slow and medium speed, there is no issues. But if I try for a fast start(like a race situation) its struggles until I hit 4K RPM. I have tried many different RPM/Feathering the clutch for a Quick start, but only above 11K RPMs seems to not lose power. If I hold the RPM at anything under 10K, it's like the bike chokes out power to prevent tire-spin or wheelies. The best example I can give for it would be. When I ride my friends Ducati 1199 panigale with full traction control on in a slightly wet condition it drops the power to optimize traction. I do realize this is a big bike, but, to me, this doesn’t seem normal.
Another problem I have noticed, but not significant is when I’m riding along at highway speeds and I drop 3 gears to pass someone, there is a slight 1-2 sec hesitation before the bike takes off. Its very minimal and I have already adjusted my driving habits to account for that. But I figured id mention it in case it's part of my original problem. Any assistance into the issue would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to read/reply to my post.

When was the last time your valve clearances were checked and the throttle bodies synched? Tight valve clearances or out-of-synch throttles could be the root cause. If both those things are good, your spark plugs may be burnt causing too large a plug gap which the ignition is struggling to fire across until rpm comes up.

Guys here will help.

It's a stock 2006 ZX14R. When I takeoff from a dead stop, When the RPMs are under 4K, it lacks power...after I hit 4K RPM it's like a power band kicks in and the bike comes alive like it should. If I accelerate slow and medium speed, there is no issues. But if

Stock ? Remove the secondary throttle plates. 2006 2007 models had very slow fly opening. Old issue lots of info here on how to remove. Enjoy your new found bottom end. Cheers.

What maintenance has been done? I'd definitely start with the plugs and check the chain for tight spots.

"lacks power"...hummm...that's a pretty subjective observation. My 07 with flies out,pc'd and piped STILL had a 'bog' if you could call it that from 1K until about 3500,4K.Depending on how fast the bike was moving at that point.Once it hit those rpms it wanted to lift very quickly.Plenty of torque.I also had a manual ignition timing wheel on there...4 degrees advance. That helped with the spooling up at low rpms...but still,it didn't take off like a drag bike just opening her up...There was that area of 'not so stellar' power. On a dragstrip...with the rpms up at the line...the torque and all is immediate...but unless you take off like that every time...I don't know IF you can get past that low rpm thing....without some fueling mods or something?I think your engine is just being 'normal'...spooling up and THEN hammering it...it's a very different feel.

All the above advice is very good....a bit of fine tuning with some fresh parts certainly won't hurt;)

When i get home tomorrow afternoon and pick up the bike, I’ll look into a few things mentioned. I'll change the plugs for sure(It's something i was planning on doing anyway). The previous owner(Fire chief) said he was always on top of maintenance. Even more then should have. and judging by how clean the bike is...I believe him.

So, I seem to be having an issue finding a good exhaust. I have corbin hard bags that I will be using when I’m out of town/travelling, But will take the bags off when in town. Any insight from someone with Corbin hard bags would be greatly appreciated. The problem i am running into is there's is not many options for a “Performance Exhaust” that works with Corbin bags. I like the size of the stock Exhaust, but stock exhaust also has its usual factory restrictions. Catalytic converters, Spark arrestors, Shotty sound and limited Performance. The size and length of the Factory pipes fits really well with the Corbin hard bags. Another problem I’m having is allot of the aftermarket exhausts are oval or triangle. The last thing i want to do is burn a hole in the hardbags from exhaust rubbing or from the heat of the exhaust. I would also like to keep the dual exhaust.

Is there anyway to hook up a smart phone to the ZX14? I have the Galaxy S3, and am curious if anyone has been able to hook up there phone to the PC on their bike to monitor RPM, Speed, Timing, Fuel injection ect, ect.?? My dads Harley is controlled with an Ipod. He got rid of his whole interment cluster and uses the Ipod for everything. He can make slight ajustments to timing/ignition.
Thanks Derek

I like how the Corbin bags fits so clean/nice around the Factory Exhaust. But I don't like the stainless. I prefer a Carbon fiber or??
