Alive and Thankful!
10/25/10 6:20 PM

Had A great ride Sunday until about 5 miles from the end. I went into a diminishing radius corner too fast and didn't make it out the other side. I knew I was in trouble as soon as I saw it tightening up, I grabbed a little brake and tried to low side it which was working pretty well until I guess the oil pan caught on something and we went airborne. As I was doing the "earth, sky, earth, sky" mambo I was thanking God that he had taken care of me until now.

I was stopped abruptly by a steel fence post, my bike was at my feet. I couldn't see out of my right eye for about 5 minutes and my left shoulder hurt like hell. Thankfully I have really good taste in riding companions and they arrived quickly to help. They took care of me, Got the crash truck out there, loaded up what was left of my bike and me and got us home and unloaded it all and tried to make me feel better about what happened.

I felt like I dislocated my shoulder and broke a few ribs yesterday but after the things that I have been through this year I feel I should trust the Lord since he has proven time and time again that he is faithful and in control.

This morning I'm not as sure about the shoulder but it still hurts to breath and the arm doesn't move much yet but I know it will get better.

The bike is another story. I haven't had the heart to go really look at the damage since I got her home but I know that the front and rear bodywork is seriously jacked up and of bigger concern is the fact that the oil pan is broken off. I'm not sure what to think about that as I would like to put her back together if it is at all possible. I've just started back to work about a month and a half ago after 6 months without a job, so I didn't have full coverage insurance on her.

Will post pics as soon as I can get up and around again.

Man, I am so sorry to hear that! I'm glad you're alive and able to tell the story. That's really all that counts. Metal/plastic can be replaced. I had a similar incident happen to me on my previous (and totaled) '14 (candy lime green). Heal up and get back on. For me, corners messed with me for about 2 weeks, then I just got more and more comfortable with it.

I got a few pics from the crash site. Hopefully I can get them posted when I figure it out. Before I left for the ride I was debating with myself whether or not not wear my full leathers, finally I decided I would and what a great decision that was! One of the most painful spots is on my hip, right underneath some of the heaviest padding on my suit! I can only imagine what shape I would be in if not for my leathers.
I hope that everyone here picks up on the lesson that I didn't have to learn, All The Gear All The Time!

jetson:

Very sorry to hear about your accident. Sounds very much like what happened to my son a few months back on his FJR-1300. He broke a few ribs and a bone in his foot. Bike ended up being totaled. Hope yours is fixable.

Hang in there... -bg

Thanks for all the good wishes! I looked at her a little bit today and I think we have the technology to put her back together again even if we don't have all the kings horses and all the kings men.

I've got oil and coolant on the floor under the bike, should I be worried?

I think oil and coolant are the least of your worries at this point! She's got no oil pan....well...there ya go!Coolant. She did the flipsy flop yes?No doubt ya lost some coolant while she decided to take flight(inside the fairings and such)(unless whatever sliced that pan off smacked the radiator first). How's the wheels?I assume you lost the meters and stuff as well?(the cowl and all).Break that meter bracket off the steering stem housing?

My complete restoration back in 07 totaled right around 3,000 dollars.2,000 of which was a complete new Plasma Blue Bodykit. It was way worth it...my bike and I have been happy ever since. It was a sad day...that's for sure.I was at first convinced she was a goner..totaled.But it ended up being less severe than it looked.Did all the install/replacement work myself...saved a bunch of money doing that.

At 1500 miles,my beautiful Diablo Black ZX was forced to TRY to take a 15mph narrow two lane country road 60 or so degree turn at 70mph.Dumb driver just didn't have the skills to pull it off!I know about being thankful.Just as I hit(the first time)I crossed over to the opposite shoulder and a pickup truck was just comin around the curve.A second or two later,I'd have been doa.No doubt about that.

thanks blue, I may be a little rattled but broken oil pan=oil all over, I already figured that out! The concerning part was the coolant. I don't think that the radiator took a hit so I'll have to get her apart before I know for sure what happened. BTW why did you change from beautiful black to blue?
At first glance it doesn't look too bad, The wheels look straight, the tail section looks rough but I think it's just plastics, the gauge cluster is gone but I think that happened when it landed upside down and broke the fairing and mirrors off. The sides look good other than being covered in oil and some dirt and grass.
I can't move well enough yet to look but does anyone know if I have to pull the motor to replace the pan?

God no...(at least,I don't THINK so?)(maybe the pipes...but they're coming off anyway,right?)

Black to Blue...actually,the guy I bought the bodykit from didn't have any Diablo Black ones.Had the Plasma Blue though...so I went with it.I'm very happy I did.The black was gonna get me killed!(you know, that whole "sinister" look deal).Wanted to get somethin a little less "Diabolical"...you know..."ride like the Devil" thing. The blue actually is quite calming while riding.Reminds me about ...."SLOW THE HELL UP WILL YA?".Ya..I know...strange...yep,that'd be me alright.Plus it's very good with not showing dirt and "tiny" scratches and stuff we all get over time.Shines up sweet, even changes color in the light...me likes.

No hurry of course, but PLEASE take some pics of her, will ya?Damaged.I had a few pics of mine...actual photos though.Lost em somewhere.I wish I had some here. She looked BAAAAADDD....totally unsaveble at first look. After I was able to wipe the tears outta my eyes....alas!New Hope began to replace "she's a goner".I wasn't about to part THAT quickly with my bird.

Okay...nuf said about me(FINALLY).You said it ripped yer oil pan off.You mean, sheared the bolts outta the outside circumference?(or just the drain plug?)Geez...no wonder yer rad's leakin!Probably gouged a hole on the lower edge there somewhere. There's a guy here...CORYBUSA....in the for sale section.Brand new bodykits....great price also especially since they're coming off factory bikes with NO MILES on em.He's also got a bunch of factory NEW parts....I'd hit him up...see what he can do for ya.You'll get er goin again...better than before!Glad yer wheels aren't bent and such.Frontend's probably okay then long as she didn't get a serious jolt to the forks.I wouldn't mess with any of the engine mounts or anything unless you really think it got smacked good.Maybe just make sure they're tight. But I wouldn't remove anything with the structural part unless I absolutely had to.Thankfully,my engine barely nicked the asphalt on the one side...the fairing broke free and saved the cases and engine from slamming. No actual damage to the motor or mounts..just a TINY scratch at the ignition cover.Got lucky...sure did.God is GOOD.

That's very cool you were able to "thank GOD" while you were doin the Google Earth deal. The only thing I could say was "Oh Sh&%!"Then I woke up.Your wreck and friend's response sound almost identical to mine.Amazing.

I was watching a PBR documentary on Netflix tonight and after seeing some of the injuries that theses guys sustain and still climb back on within a few days has me feeling like a wimp. One guy broke his ankle in 2 places and required lots of screws and plates to put it back together again, he was riding in the national championship 3 weeks later!

The reining champ tore his bicep loose from the elbow on his gripping arm and he wrapped it up and kept trying to ride. With just a couple of broken ribs and a shoulder separation holding me back, I need to cowboy up!
I need a primer on posting photos on here so that ya'll can help with the damage assessment.

BTW thanks blue! I can use all the help I can get! She's going to be better than before and look twice as hot!

Just heal up Bro....those other guys...the pros...who knows WHAT kind of drugs they're givin em to race...it IS about money afterall(I just noticed...ya said PBR (ah well, same deal, different machine!).You aint no wimp.Friggin wrecks are serious shit.Everyone heals(mentally and physically)at their own pace.I'm just glad you were able to "learn a lesson" without winding up brain dead or something. You'll ride again...and be better the next time out!

As far as pics go...go to PhotoBucket.Open an account(free).Upload yer pics to your account.Save...then,click on "all albums",and "just browse" to open up the pics with the "code" options. You'll see the "options" at the bottom of each pic in there(IMG CODE...that's the second option).Have the website you're sending the pic to opened already and "minimized" to the tray in "reply mode".Right click to "copy" the correct "option"(IMG CODE)."Maximize" your website tab by clicking on it,right click and "paste" where you want the pic to be in the "reply" mode.Just don't forget after you've downloaded to the site(the destination site),to hit "reply" to post the pics in your topic reply.Your pics will show right up...Voila!

Oh yeah...she's fixable.Very.New this and that....you'll be rollin in no time. How bout a pic of under the engine, where the pan "used to be?".Wheels, frame, all look okay to me...course,I'm not there,but....if I compared yours to mine....see all your "saved" bodywork, pipe, all that stuff?Mine was like.....GONE.Frontend cowl....GONE.All those neat brackets and stuff up front....GONE!Rear end....GONE.You'll get er up and runnin soon Bro...just hang in there and heal!
Basically what I ended up with before restoring was a rolling chassis. It looked HORRIBLE...and UNFIXABLE at first.

Glad you came out of it without serious injuries. Though I doubt your pain level agreed for a while.

I know the "earth, sky, earth, sky" routine intimately, will never forget it.

Take care, and don't take as long as I did to get back on the horse.
