Stops Running/Back firing
07/18/10 5:30 AM

Hi
I have 07 model which has 20,000km, it has yoshimuira full system, dna air filter, pwr cmnder and ignition module.

It has come up a with a FI error a couple of time on a long ride, whistle stoping all of a sudden like the kill switch was flicked while at the lights. Also backfired abruptly making the bike to surge a couple of times. Was warm day and slow riding in built up traffic. Stopped for a period of time, went ok for while until next time had a slow riding back firing/stopping. Continued this exercise only when slow riding backfiring and occasional stopping at lights.

Had bike serviced explained situation, said i need to put the baffles back in...They reckon this was the cause of temp high/backfiring/stopping.

Yet put it back in there, still continued.....Its not a regular occurrence. I have only witnessed the error the first couple times when i was on the long ride.....Went on a 4000km trip and were in a city cbd at the time.

Any theories are welcome. Cheers. Its not a really big issue just annoying.

No, had the bike serviced and told the story....Which they never looked into by the sound of it. Had dropped it off on way to work and had to get someone else to pick it up as i was at work(I ring them up explained in best detail over the phone). Its an issue which has been going on for a while i have tried to looking into myself as i know its electrical issue and that is like finding a needle in a hay stack. I think on my day off ill have to follow your steps in investigating the problem. Cheers though best information so far found.

Just pull the code and Hub can isolate it. Mor than likely it's the PC but the code could show an ECU problem. Hell it could be as simple as a corrupt map file.

1. Most find a ground being the problem to the bike's ground out from the PC box.

Where is your power commander Grounded ? If it's behind Rad Bottle, which is where they tell you to put it, You will have trouble. I did. Two other 14s did and one M109.

Stupid location and how they came up with a ground behind plastic I will never know.

It would seem the plastic in the rad fluid tank gets hot and soft, then ground is lost, but then returns to make you nuts. Relocate. Worked for me. Cheers.

I had a hole punched in the radiator while on a trip last year. Bike got very hot. Overflow tank plastic started to melt where it was connected to the frame. Bike wouldn't start. Melted plastic had interfered with the PC ground. Good idea not to put it there. -bg

I was having trouble with the ground at the plastic resevoir so i got me a piece of ground wire 15-20 in long took my cutters and cut the end off the ground wire that was hooked to the bottle soldered it up to the extension piece ran it thru where the throttle bodies are to the battery side and just outside the battery compartment there is a bolt that the battery ground is connected to, i connected it there, problem solved.

Do you have a Muzzy aftermarket IGNITION ADVANCER on there? If so....I'd pull the ignition cover and check the screws on the outer adjustment ring.Make sure they haven't loosened up and are allowing your timing to go crazy.Sounds VERY familiar! It will be an FI error code 21 "if" you can get it to code.Once it slips out of time, the ecu will bypass the situation and go to the programmed timing as close as possible, effectively "cancelling" the code.So it may appear at one time. And not reappear after she begins to run okay again. But the problem will still be there. The ecu will take the "last known good configuration" and set the engine time to that.If it codes on startup and stops running,THEN,restating will be difficult because the ecu cannot "use" the out of time condition IF it's gone too far out...which it will have if it's coding. If the timing ring is moving while riding[because of loose screws](which it will as a matter of physics)...you'll get periods of good running, then bad running, depending on how you are shifting and applying/not applying throttle.A primary signal that SOMETHING is wrong will be a change in muffler noise. You WILL hear the exhaust start sounding different-backfiring on decel excessively-and the tone will change.Your temp may go up.Your fuel mileage will abruptly begin to drop.Put those three together...your timing's out.Rough idle,or stalling at decel.Loss of power on acceleration.Bogging.Popping.Engine dying when closing throttle.
