How to get power on ignition switch after triple tree replacement
12/28/12 7:11 PM

I replaced my stock triple tree with an aftermarket chrome triple tree. As I got all the parts back on, my ignition switch will not turn the bike on...or get any power either. The reason I know my battery works is because my color changing LEDs are connected directly to the battery and I can still turn them on with my remote. The funny thing is I cannot even get the bike moving while in gear while holding the clutch lever. Any ideas anyone...I'm totally pissed here.

Check electrical connections, may also need to check the lock didn't get reversed when assembled.

Not to sure what you mean by locked reversed. Can you explain because that may just
be the problem

Not 100% sure as I have never replaced the ignition switch but it may be possible to turn the switch 180 degrees.

IF the ignition switch installed just like the factory one....no wiring changes...then it sounds like it could be at the plug in down in the left midfairing top pocket there...you checked that harness there did you?The one with the clearish plastic 'cover' going around the plug(s).AND maybe...the fuse...it may have burnt somehow while installing or removing...just a thought. Those wires going into the switch...they aren't arcing under there are they,no wire got pulled free maybe?Do any drilling on that switch?May have drilled through a wire or something inside?Solder connections all good?

Thanks for all the options to check for a fix but no luck. I orderes a new ignition switch so I'm gonna cross my fingers and pray its just the switch. By how can I check for power to the bike without having to turn the key.

Good question! You COULD check the battery voltage with a meter...just to be sure that battery hasn't dropped somehow since you did the change over.A grounded wire could drain that bat real quick if it didn't blow a fuse.

Ok nought a new switch and this is not the issue.

I want to explain again...I took he old black triple tree and put a chrome one on. I had to take the ignition switch out of the old tree and now even with a new switch to compare...no power. This has to be some security issue. I need help...my next step is renting a trailer and taking it to the dealer...which equates to money being spent.

Have you checked the main fuse under the fuel tank, does the battery have charge in it, what is the voltage?
Sound like your not getting power to the switch itself, try using a test light to see if power is getting to the switch.

I haven't checked for a fuse under the tank, but I did check he main fuse by the battery and it was fine. With a test light I did check for power in the battery which I do have but the main issue is I cannot check for power elsewhere because without the ignition switch working, nothing will power on. I'll check the under the tank but now I need to find out where's its at.

The one under the tank is the main fuse.
Remove tank, you will see a panel at the back of the frame near where you sit, remove all four bolts, the fuse is located inside. You probably blew this as you where either disconnecting or reconnecting the new switch. There will be power somewhere at the switch even if it's not turned on.

Ok, I'm an idiot. So I didn't realize that the fuse right behind the battery was the spare fuse for the main fuse. So instead of taking my tank off, I was able to reach the main fuse and replace it. Voila, I know have a fully working bike again. Thanks for the help, as this saved me money and time.
