Fuel Tank Bracket and Mud Flap Bracket Removal

I have had to remove these braces from time to time to perform aftermarket wire routing procedures. Other than those, it will probably not ever be necessary to remove them unless the frame needs to be disassembled.

Tools:
10mm socket

Do First:
Remove Seat
Prop the back of the Fuel Tank or remove it (see Fuel Tank Removal, steps 1 through 8).

Removal
1. Note the hose and wire routing and remove the six bolts (marked by yellow triangles in the photo below) from the fuel tank bracket and the mudflap (OEM undertail) bracket using a 10mm socket.

Clear the rear brake light wire retainer band [A] and the wiring harness bracket [B]. Remove the Fuel tank bracket and Mudflap bracket from the frame.

Installation
2. Installation of the mudflap bracket is the reverse procedure. You may wish to omit installing the steel wire harness bracket from the LH side to save an ounce of weight (see Terminator Plug/Wire Connector Mount, LH Side Frame, steps 1-4).

The parts fiche shows there to be one short rubber cushion on the bottom edge of the mudflap bracket. There is not supposed to be any other rubber cushions on this part. Loosely thread in the two M5 x 18mm screws that fasten the mudflap bracket to the frame.

Press the mudflap up to the bracket and use a 10mm socket to tighten the two M5 x 18mm screws that fasten the mudflap bracket to the mudflap. DO NOT TORQUE THESE, THEY ARE WELLNUT SCREWS. Just lightly snug should be fine, no Locktite.

Tighten the M5 x 18 mm bolts that fasten the mudflap bracket to the frame.

Basic torque spec for general M5 fasteners is 30 ~ 43 in. lb.

Position the fuel tank bracket with the long rubber cushion on the forward bottom edge. My bike has a short rubber cushion on each side of the rear bottom edge of the fuel tank bracket as well.

Loosely fasten the fuel tank bracket to the frame and install the fuel tank (see Fuel Tank Removal, steps 9 through 12). Loosely installed, the fuel tank bracket will position itself so that all bolt holes line up when the fuel tank is installed. If you don’t take this measure, you will have problems with the fit of the fuel tank on its mounts.

After the fuel tank has been installed, use a 10mm socket to tighten the M5 x 12mm screws that fasten the fuel tank bracket to the the frame.

Basic torque spec for general M5 fasteners is 30 ~ 43 in. lb.
