Oil Filter Adapter Removal
10/06/22 2:09 PM

Hey, has anybody ever removed the short nipple that the oil filter threads onto? I suspect the treads may be ruined from a cross thread. Although I am very careful, I can’t get a new one to screw on. I thought perhaps the replacement was defective, so I bought another and same problem, starts to thread, but then stops. FYI, the replacements were the same brand as the one that’s on there. I was changing my oil for a trip to Durango and this happened. I put the old filter back on with fresh oil. I plan on looking at both the adapter and the threads of the filter next oil change. Any tips/thoughts would be appreciated !

Did you buy your Bike new or used?
I bought mine new and only me has ever changed the oil filter.
I use HF303RC filter with the added nut to the top.

If the old filter screwed back on easily, then it sounds like the new oil filters have damaged threads.
I would try a different Brand.
Or you could "chase" the threads with a "Tap & Tie" tool.
Talk to your Motorcycle Dealer to check those new oil filter threads.

Another problem that happened in years past, when a Manufacturer changed the design of its oil filter. To fit a motorcycle properly, the thread-snout must be concave. The Mfr changed and raised the snout up and the filter never got to the O-ring to seal. I think it was a WIX filter. And I had my 03 Yamaha FZ1. Which is the same size my as Ninja.

I've heard of aftermarket filters not having threads that match OEM. It was wise that you didn't force it even if the ones you tried were the same brand as the one you removed. I'd try an OEM filter if the threads look OK. If you have damaged threads on the fitting, you might be able to track down a thread restoring die of the same size and pitch.

I bought the bike used several years ago and have done many oil changes. I have already tried a second filter brand. My plan is to wait till next oil change and examine more closely. I think the question I was probably not clear on is: In the event the adapter is stripped, how is it removed? Is it just left hand threaded? The part breakdown shows that it may be threaded on both sides, but not sure.

I believe both end are threaded so one side screws into the engine and the oil filter screws on the other side. I believe that it is right hand thread so loosening is to the left.
I am hoping that is what you were asking or I misunderstood
