Fogged Oil Check Window
10/30/14 11:20 AM

I just noticed that my ZX's oil level check window is fogged. It has 1200 miles on it and I had a dealer replaced oil/filter at 600miles. Sorry for bad pic but the white thingy in the middle of the window seems to be condensation. Checked coolant but no loss there. There is no milky thing on top of oil, either. So I doubt it is caused by bad head gasket. Temperature here has been relatively mild with around 70F and ZX is kept in Garage. Last night the window was clear after a ride (12 miles of freeway) and this morning I spotted the condensation. Anything I should worry about?

That usually happens with a short ride and not getting up to full temp. Take it for a long ride and it will clear up.
Starting it for someone to hear will also create that issue.

Thank you for your inputs. I guess 12 miles ride wasn't enough for ZX. Temp went up to 205F at the signal right before my house, though. I will keep eyes on this for the next couple of weeks. Thank you again

Normal for cold weather opperation. Run the bike long and hard and it will go away. It's condensation that formed in the cran case and got stirred up into your oil. No biggy. Much better off to NOT store the bike like that if at all possible. I've found you will get condensation if you change oil under 50 F. Go for 60 F to be sure,

Rook is correct, nothing to worry about, only reason you can tell it's there is the glass window. If you change when oil and motor are warm, and you should, as the warm air in your engine cools it pulls in a small amount of cooler moist air causing a very small bit of condensation, first time you get your engine up to full temp for a while it'll go away. Happens worse on high humidity days.

^^Yes, oil changes will do it. Riding the bike for a short distance in cold weather does more or less the same thing. I think there is a crank case vent and it prolly sucks cold air in from outside. You get condensation that way too. It will burn off and stay clear if you get the bike really warmed up. Don't sweat it. I've seen threads on this topic before (I even started one on the old forum). It's normal.

had the same thing on my 06. had only started it a couple times in the last few months and it was real humid when I did. let it idle in the garage for 35 or 40 minutes and then rode it around for an hour and white stuff went away. don't feel bad, I panicked when I saw that stuff too!!

you need to run it a good 30-40 miles to get that kind of build up worked out, maybe a bit less, maybe a bit more. Think about it like this. You run it 10 minutes its up to operating temp. That's start to force the water in your engine to start to vaporize. But it's still in the engine. It takes a while to get that all worked out of the system.

Moral of the story, avoid short rides because this is what happens. And don't think it's any different for your other vehicles and engines.

^^I agree. If you ride in cold temps you need to go for a long ride to get the whole bike hot enough to avoid the condensation sludge. I think about an hour will do it if it's about 30° F outside.
