Zx14 engine durability
03/28/17 7:48 AM

Hey guys I just bought a 2006 creampuff zx14. 7000 miles, always kept in climate controlled garage, one owner, full race exhaust, all kinds of goodies. My only issue with the bike is he said he drag raced it about a dozen times. That scares me. But should it? I've read a couple things about rod bearings is why it bothers me. Right now she's smooth as silk. Even quieter than my friends 2016 he just bought. But I worry a lot. ALOT.

Not to much you can do after you bought but worry ... except

Look up Blackstone oil analysis, pull a sample or change out the oil and have them tell you what, if any, abnormal material is in the oil. From that you can tell if something is wearing more than normal.

So you never do any full throttle pulls?? The main difference between a full throttle pull on the highway and the dragstrip is the launch....

I don't recall ever hearing about a rod bearing going out during a race although usually it happens under similar conditions. I'd consider the engine to have passed the test in a few thousand miles. The rod bearing issue was something that happened after 6000-7000 miles if it was going to happen.

Clutch wear would be my main concer with strip use. Engine shoudl be no problem unless they had a bunch of missed shifts and over revved the hell out of it. Just some guy be boppin at the strip a bit? No worries to me.

My '06 was drag raced a lot in it's first 20,000 km's. I purchased it close to 50,000 km's. It now sits at 113,000 km's and everything is just fine.

Oil change every 5k. Filter every second change.

A dozen times is just a snack bar to this thing. The bike was designed for drag racing. The parts were hardly stressed. It banged on a rev limiter if the guy missed a shift. Show me the second owner riding it and claiming it's quieter than another similar engine family, and I'll show; you more need to worry about throttle control vs. the gumball machine on top of some cars.

LOL as long as when you went to buy it and asked "does it run?", the person started it revved the shit out of as soon as it was running it's probably fine.
