Suggestions for a mid-size bike?
10/11/22 10:52 AM

Hi All - I'm thinking about getting a 2nd bike, one that's less of a lean-forward-rocketship. Wondering if anyone can make a suggestion as to maybe a 500 - 650 that's a little more standard riding position, nice and light, and also one that while I know it will be slower but not so slow that I just can't even stand to ride it. There may be no such thing, since ya get pretty spoiled riding the big ZX rocketship, but I thought I'd ask and see what you all think.

I've watched a few review vids on some, and it kinda seems like 500s are so much lower on power vs the 14 that they sound like puny starter bikes, so 500 maybe too small, unless you all know of something different in that size. Maybe the 600-650 range will have something? 750?

My buddy has an MT10 and recently got a new CB500. That thing is very nice and light, but really it's just too under powered. Hopefully there's something between that and the 14, that's still light and nimble but with reasonable power.

Thanks!

I'm sure you could change the sprocket gearing to get the kind of umph you're looking for. Think of all the 600 cc stunt bikes with short gearing...and it looks like they still can go pretty fast when they want to.

Look at a MT07 or MT09. Grunty and can do just about anything.

I'll give that some thought. Thanks.

For some reason those haven't caught my attention in the past. I better take a closer look.

That's what I was afraid of. Thanks.

So, prior to reading y'all's suggestions, I had concluded yesterday that if for some reason I had to pick a bike today, it'd prob be the 2023 Yamaha R1 Anniversary: 136 lbs less than the ZX14 (584 - 448) ... but it doesn't solve any of the first sentence I typed to y'all in my OP: "I'm thinking about getting a 2nd bike, one that's less of a lean-forward-rocketship."

Man, I just like me some acceleration and speed, and I'm concerned that if I don't have it I will have wasted my $$$.
