Shifter spring issue
05/11/17 10:39 PM

I have a 2012 ZX14R candy surf blue , I have 22,000 miles on it and the only problems Ive had were self inflicted, until now that is . MY shifter lever doesnt return after changing gears. looking over the exploded view of the shifter mechanism I figured it would be a broken spring , so off with the clutch cover and removed the clutch to reveal a broken spring , great no problem, put a new spring on and re-assemble and were riding again . No such luck
the spring is on backorder nationwide , kawasaki cannot or will not give any ETA for the manufacturing of them. cant find one anywhere , considering sending the broken spring to a U.S.A spring manufacturer to have one made , my bike has been sitting in my garage in pieces for weeks with no end in sight.
ITS A PIECE of TWISTED WIRE for GAWD SAKES , it doesnt have to endure extreme temps , nor deal with the elements and rust etc its submerged in oil , whats so special about this spring and CAN ANYONE give me some advice on finding one or making one or a workaround for not having one , I thought about an air shifter , but dont know if they eliminate the need for the shifter to return . this is the 32 motorcycle ive owned in my lifetime and the only one to sit in pieces for lack of a 5.00 spring . im wide open to suggestions and / or ideas. Thanks

If I'm not mistaken, a 2008 and 2012 shifter spring part number is the same. Good luck!

Take a look at this ebay link:

Good call Kolfa, according to bike bandit, both the 2008 and the 2012 have the same part numbers for the springs in the gear change mechanism so they should be interchangable.

If you can't find anything on ebay, I'd suggest calling the guys at Factory Pro, they sell a "Shift star evo" kit for the ZX14 which MAY include the spring that you are looking for, in the instructions it looks like at least 1 spring is included at least.

Thank-you very much , I bought the assembly you were kind enough to guide me to. It certainly looks the same as what I have laying on the garage floor. Its certainly worth the $12.00 plus shipping to find out if it is the same.
Thanks again. I owe you a cold one at least.
ps . I was thinking of replacing the clutch plates while I had it apart, but the stock ones still look like new,
full set of stock plates being 240.00 I will wait until they actually start slipping or until I need another shifter return spring . Peace-out

I had the exact same issue a few months ago. All parts came within a couple weeks. You can always cancel your order if it has not shipped.

You can also contact Northernkaw on zx1441r.com for parts. He got me the shift spring bolt...but as I said, it came a week later from bikebandit.

Personally, I would just install the whole EVO shift star if you're already in there. the kit comes with a new high tension spring. You could order just the spring too from Factory Pro.

but, sounds like you already got it.

Let me save you a huge pain in the ass. when you install the spring, be SUPER careful. Be certain that the detent arm is on the shoulder of the bolt or you will destroy it and the bolt.

and I can tell you, it is worthwhile to remove the shift star to get the detent arm in first, then press the arm forward with a rag covered screwdriver while you pop the star back in. I did a lot of research and came acxross a ZX-12 thread that spoke of the same thing. Damned near impossible to do it smoothly with the star in. You'll see if you try just don't tighten it unless you can eyeball that the detent arm is dead center on the bolt. The tutorial is not writ yet but I have pics if you need them.

You really did save me a boatload of what would have been more self-inflicted pain. The pics made it perfectly clear to me what you were talking about. Where do I have the cold beers sent to ? Actually that sort of info is priceless.
