Anybody do any riding in southern California. There are plenty of hills and canyons here and the weather is always good

RE: Start a ZX-14 Annual Ride/Rally?

It will very possibly be too cold, or too bad of weather, or both, above Virginia in mid-April. I know going to Daytona Bike Week, even taking the autotrain to make it easy, will require 3-4 hours each way droning in frigid weather.
If you are going to do a Deals Gap, make it when you can possibly get warm weather. May, for example. Nice time of year down there.
Consider though, Deals Gap is quite a hike for anyone from Virginia north. I scoped it out, and assuming I could do 5 hours of riding a day (plus stops, 6-7 hours), it would take me three days to get there. Sure, I could do it in two if I burned slab during daylight hours, but I'm too old to do that kind of 10+ hour a day riding crap.
I made it back from Mt. Snow VT in about 8 hours, and that kicked my ass for a week. Heh.
I guess we need to know who lives where, and then plan for a East and a West event. Or possibly a East, Middle, and West events.
A lot of folks would have to take vacation from work to do something like this.
Although chances are, I'd show up on something other than a ZX14, since mine is officially for sale now.

I'm in the Big Valley in Central Calif near Fresno, and would be up for a meet anywhere in the west!

Samuel1352 -- if, by chance, you're interested in organizing one; I would support it and would help. I'm also in the San Joaquin Valley (Fresno/Clovis). Maybe a Central Coast ride that could include Bay Area or Northern Cal riders in the spring or a ride across the Sierras, through Yosemite and Tioga Pass on 120 (and back over Sonora Pass, on 108) later in the season?

There is too much temptation of dialing up the motor on these monsters.I usually do 70-75.Hadrid and I went over to Cumberland,Md a few weeks ago to meet Privateer and his COG buddies.I was in the lead and next thing I know were doing 150.My bad I saw this long hill and just whacked the throttle. Then doing 80-90 for 2 hours just seemed natural.Your not going to do that very often without some very expensive tickets.I know for me I can't sit there doing 70 hour after hour. Not hapenning with this bike. When we got there it was fun sitting with a bunch of people talking bikes.Thats me in the middle.

So far this forum has never generated a successful group buy, much less a national rally. Anyone want to make some speculations why this is so? I'll keep my opinions to myself.
It is possible most ZX-14 owners are young people only interested in going fast and not so much into socializing.

I could meet you halfway from Philly to the Burgh.Get off the turnpike and go North or South. There is that Thunder in the valley around Johnstown
.Rememember the Johnstown flood? There are some nice rides in the middle of the state.Harrisburg is about in the middle of the state and if you go south you can hit Hagerstown,Md.There are some nice roads.

Craig, I lived in Lebanon County for four years. Lebanon its about 45 minutes from Harrisburg. Haven't been up there in 12 years. I am planning to visit Pittsburgh with a group of friends this year to attend a baseball game. I don't think I'll be riding since they don't own bikes. Thanks for the invite, I'll keep you posted.

Grn is from Big Sky territory and Hub is from outer space!
So what happened to the mid-PA ride?
I posted up the Avon, CO national rally for the MSTA in June but no 14's 'cept me. There was a Boss Hoss, though, among the sport tourers and sport bikes. It was a great meet and the mtns were beautiful even though some of them were on fire.
BTW, I got an average of 45 mpg on the trip, total. Daily riding returns low 30's in mpg. Road 3's worked well and held up to all those miles (3800 total) very well. TRC-3, literally saved the day three times; once in a downpour and sleet storm just outside the interstate tunnel after passing over the continental divide going west. 7 degree down grade in pouring rain and running rivers instead of tire tracks and the bike gripped like a tractor! Later over a pass peak on the way to Steamboat and again on the way over a pass in Wyoming; a few miles of NO ROAD at all, as the passes were taken out to totally rebuild the highway, were also negotiated in TRC-3 without a hitch despite bedrock, wet clay, gravel and small boulder riding surfaces!
Sounds like the best chance of a ZX 14 ride/ meet would be in PA. But this thread has died? August or September maybe?? I don't like droning along on the interstate but would consider it again as a means to an end to ride some of PA's best mtn byways.

somewhere in the middle would be nice and with a heads up, I would definitely make it. Privateer is right... and it's sad. Even here in Austin, people always come up with excuses: "it's too hot to ride" or "it's too cold" some of those guys riding seasons are shorter than my riding season in NE! lol

Hi Dragking,
I travelled thru NE too. You know it wasn't as drab as people say. I enjoyed looking at the herds of good eatin' beef in the Western half of the state.
MSTA has some rides coming up in Kentucky and Ohio and MO! All kind of centrally located. This thread made it look like the best chance of something happening might be in PA. And PA has some great hills and ridges as I remember form the distant past.
Advantages of piggybacking onto the MSTA is its cheap to join and the rides are already organized along with the lodging, etc. Also they would not mind some new participants even if they all were on 14'S.
I'm looking for another trip this year and there is a West Virginia Fall colors ride coming up for the MSTA in September I think. Perhaps I will find a link to the main site and post it here just for the chance that someone on the list will want to go on one of the upcoming rides mentioned above.
Cheers,

Just reviving this thing!! Im in the middle of Missouri and would love to meet up with some other riders in the Midwest. Im always putting together big rides in the city where I live so would be more than happy to organize something around my area is there is enough interest.
