Swing arm extensions
11/05/09 10:05 PM

Hi everyone,
I have a question regarding swing arm extensions. Does the bolt on type extension arms compromise the strength of the standard swing arm.
I have installed a set of IRC extensions which took the wheel out another 7 and a half inches.

Sitting in the shed with a few mates having a few drinks and I thought it was a very valid question. Didn’t really think of it at first but when you’re sitting there looking at the swing arm and it’s extension. Made me wonder.

I could definitely tell the difference in the suspension first ride out after mods were done.
In hindsight maybe a whole new swing arm set up would of been a better option.
Any thoughts or Tech advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Dave

IRC is Italian Racing Components.

My concern is will the extension cause a decrease in the structural intergrity of the standard swing arm through normal road use.
I have seen alot of the aftermarket fabricated swing arms with bracing built in. I imagine it's there for a reason.

I have noticed some chain noise since I've made the additions. Everything appears aligned and in order there. I figured it might be the extra length and being a new chain at first.

The stretch is going to soften up your suspension some....if its too soft you may need to add some spring preload. I had to do that on my stretched 1100.

Is that the Central Hydraulics Motorcycle Lift pictured in your avatar? If so, so do you like it? I've been thinking about getting one.

Thanks. -bg

Hi BG, not sure on the make of it. No manufacturer lables. But it is an absolute back saver, I'm 6'1", got a 3 level spinal fusion, so gettin on my hands and knees to work on the bike isn't much fun for me... This type of ramp/stand is an absolute must in my opinion for any one who tinkers with bikes.
Only thing I don't like is the one sided locking pin on the top roller rails when the ramp is jacked up. I only use the steel bar on the bottom rails. Locks both rollers off from accidental drop, not like the top which only locks one side off.
The rear paddock stand fits well on the ramp for rear wheel removals and stabilising the bike. Still figuring on something for the front as the wheel clamp takes up most of the space.

By the way, does anyone have opinions on the use of circlip chain joiner links vs rivets?

Thanks Hub.
The last chain I did was for the extensions. It ended up being a 142 link CZ chain. I went for the rivet link at first but when it came to spreading the rivet it wouldn't spread. Ended up breaking the spreader post on my riveter without making any mark on the rivet at all. Dam tuff steel that was. So I've had to resort to the cir clip for now. Was just a bit nervy about going that way as every one I talk to seems to have a horror storey about the clip link.

I admit nothing looked more impressive than the standard chain with the 4 pin rivet press.
