Race Tech Springs
03/07/13 8:36 AM

I was wondering if anyone on the forum has bought Race Tech springs for their zx14? I've dealt with them in the past on MX stuff but never anything street related. How close are their recommendations on the 14?
My fork springs are mush. Not sure if due to wear and age or not but they definately need changed.

OEM forks are quite soft. Everyone seems to feel the same on that.

There is a co that will revalve and respring for you. Dragking knows where to go for this. I'm sure he will be along shortly to give you some info. ...or PM him.

think he is in France now but prolly still online.

I wish I was Rook but the end of summer will be here before too long!

Bill you're right the suspension are soft! I went with the Ohlins shock and Fork internals but most guys running Racetech are sporting a big smile. Their rebuild is cheaper than buying Ohlins and possibly as good. If you can swing it I'd get their shock (it's in my signature) but for the forks, I would go with the Racetech rebuild if it's cheaper. I would give you pricing but I have been looking for my receipt and can't find it! I bought the shock for about $900 if memory serves me correct, the front rebuild should be around 300 but I believe that for the price of the shock you can get both rebuild with Racetech components.
The big advantage of getting the shock is the remote adjustability. That being said I have never touched it, when I ride by myself I need a harder setting and when I have the wife (130lbs she claims! LOL) I ride a little slower and the same setting works fine.

Thank you both for the info.

I can't quite justify a $1K shock on an older bike (06) but I'd certainly like a different one. The stock unit is pretty bad. But these fork springs are ridiculous. The bike was lowered when i purchased it and I'm wondering if the previous owner left the front end strapped down after he left the track and ruined the springs. Anyway they're coming out.

BTW Rook, I've used the crap out of your tutorials even though I have the FSM. Thanks for taking all the time they took to make and for posting them.

I am very glad to hear that, Bill. Keep watch. I have several more in the works. Need to actually finish the jobs before I finish the tutorials!

26bill if you weigh over 170lbs and ride aggressive your stock springs will give you trouble. A friend of mine sent his to traxxion dynamics and he seems to be very happy. There located on the east coast, not sure where you are.

Thanks wfo. I may look them up tommorrow. Im gonna try to call racetech tommorrow also and see what they say. I called a friend of mine tonight that works at Factory Connection and he said they could do a shock oil change for me but thats about it. They dont really have a parts source or database for road bike stuff. I do my own forks as far as service and spring changes.
Im in Arkansas. Did 300 mi. down to Talimena Scenic Drive Monday with the fork preload bottomed out and the rebound wide open which gave reasonable handling but certainly not great. Im 185 lbs and im not real aggressive but the roads in northwest arkansas where i live call for a reasonably well handling machine.
Thanks again for the info.

I have a 06 too and trashed the stock suspension within 5000 miles. But about 1,000 miles were track days, lol. The 06's were sprung for a 140-150 lb. Rider(WTF KHI?)
I had all the dampening maxed out and the stock shock was useless. I was 170 lb. at the time.
I went with a Penske shock and had the forks re-valved by a local race suspension shop.
Makes the 06 a different bike!
I strongly suggest the Race Tech route as many riders have had great results with them.
You can try heavily springs (Race techs web site has a handy spring rate calculator) and heavier fork oil for the street. but re-valving both ends is the best if you rail corners with regularity.
I have added 1 1/2" rear ride height also. That makes a world of difference on turn in.
That was 6 years ago now.
Now my 14 is just used as a sport tourer and I back off on the dampening settings and am still very happy with my 'race' suspension.

I finished installing the racetech springs last night but after 2 weeks of good riding weather it looks like its going to be several days before the weather is good again so I ll have to wait to test. Their linear rate springs are about 7 mm shorter than the stockers but they supply you with more than enough shims for setting preload. They also spec oil level at 110 mm vs. the service manuals 90 mm. If the forks are completely drained cleaned and dry its quite a bit more than 480 ml of oil to achieve the 110 mm.

26bill, if you don't mind me asking? What all did you end up ordering and about what did it set you back? I am saving my pennies to do this as my next upgrade.

Assuming you mean doing it yourself, the springs from racetech directly are like $115. If you're buddies with one of your local bike shops that uses Tucker Rocky you should be able to get them slighty cheaper. I paid $100 for mine. I didn't make any valving changes so I didn't spend anything there. Figure 2 liters of fork oil is $30. I would probably go ahead and replace seals and wipers while you're there and that would be around $50 or a little more. If u want seals and bushings too its a little over $100 for it all. You will have to have a spring compressor and a dampening rod pulling handle and a dampening rod holder. And Semper Fi to you as well there Leatherneck!
