How To Switchable TRE mod
07/23/09 9:16 AM

This post is a write up on how I made my own switchable TRE (Timing Retard Eliminator).

Please don't reply on why or why not to do a TRE. There are many other post for that.
Please don't highjack this post with fly options. Yes we know it's better to remove your flies and you will see a wider response change (full RPM range).
Please don’t reply with comments on PC mapping. Yes it will need a change if you always run in TRE mode but it's not a must. In fact it only needs a change from 2750 RPM's to 5750 RPM's, and only from 20% throttle change to about 60%. If you use a powercommander then you can use the compare function from a map that has a TRE mod and one that doesn't to see the difference you need to change. If you need help using the software then click on the help function while running the powercommander software and it will explain everything. After you see the change needed (it will only take about 30min at the most to figure it out, I will not do your homework for you) you can make the change yourself and save the $300 buck on a re-map and spend it on something else.

A TRE mod is just that, it's not a magical turbo switch. You will not feel a great deal of change. If fact you will only feel a change from 2750 RPM to 5750 RPM everything before that range and after that range remains the same. If you want a quicker response then that then you need to remove your flies.

A switchable TRE is for people who want to be able to switch from STOCK and TRE mode. It's also for people who want a quicker response from their ride but don't want to remove their flies (you will only see this while in TRE mode). While in TRE mode your ECU will think it is always in 6th gear except when it is in neutral. So yes you will loose your gear indicator.

This mod is also great for anyone who wants to test the theory on if a TRE works or not. You can make a pass in Stock mode then turn around and switch to TRE mode for your self and "yes" you will feel the difference.

The best part of doing a TRE mode this way is the cost!!!

You can purchase the switch and a pack of 5 resistors at RadioShack: The total cost is less then $6. $3.99 for the switch and $.99 for the pack of resistors.

Do Your Research:

Please see this tread to get more of an idea of the TRE mod on your ZX14

Click here for TRE info done on a GSXR, Ton's of info for TRE's

Lets get started......

First: Finding the GPS connector: On the left hand side of the bike, above sprocket cover near the white radiator overflow tank, you will find a green 4 pin GPS connector (Gear Position Sensor). This is what you will be working with.

Next: Below the connector is where you will be cutting in-between the CPU and GPS.

While doing your research you will see that some say you use a 220 ohm resistor and some say 270 ohm.
I will save you the confusion. This is the resistance the ECU is looking for in 6th gear. Got it by placing the bike in 6th gear and took a reading from the GPS. You will need the 270 ohm resister.

Next I prepped the plans for what I needed to do:

Then I prepped the Switch:

Label the switch and the connector as such so that you will not get confused while splicing your switch into the ECU/GPS. Also, I choose to do all my splicing by solder and heat shrink. It takes a little more time but those were the tools I had. You can use quick connectors to accomplish the same.

This is a pic of what I used to secure switch to the frame without drilling or cutting of any kind. You can choose how ever you want to do your own.

The next image is a close up of the switch installed:

Another pic of the switch from further away. It's hard to see and still reachable while sitting on the bike.

I hope this helps anyone that wants to try the TRE and really anyone who wants to save money.

If you think a TRE is a bad thing then please reply to one of the many other post not the "HOW TO" post. Thanks!!!

If you don't like the TRE then don't do it!

KEEP YOUR COMMENTS TO YOUR SELF! This is a "HOW TO" post!

That being said! And Lets Ride!

Well I made one using the same parts and it throws an FI error.

Edit: error code 25

Any chance I could just have a bad solder?
